Estibador do you work for the current recruiting team

Smarts duds were early days when he did not have the main say. generally drafting during the smart era has been a lot better and recognized among most clubs employees. Dont get confused with trading and drafting . Smart was drafting lloyd is now in charge of the lot since 2010. Plus Lloyd has a staff of over ten full time smart had one.

Brad Lloyd
2010 pick 20 Pitt
2011 pick 16 Sheridan 20 Crozier
2012 17 simpson
2013 17 Apness
2014 14 Weller

Phil Smart
2009 4 Morabito 20 Fyfe
2008 3 Hill 21 Ballentyne
2007 Palmer nab rising star
2006 first pick in 30s

Great decision to replace Smart when he had learnt the ropes and finally had the final on draft day. swapped for vic who hardley leaves the state

Most of Smart's drafts were no better than Lloyd's shockers. The amount of first round picks he wasted over the years was terrible.

I agree. Both have had good and both have had awful drafts.

The consistent theme under both is the inability to properly evaluate tall talent, and both regimes regularly refused to take enough talls in the first and second round.

The world is astonished that a drafting manager doesn't get as good players with picks 14-20 in compromised drafts as picks 3-7 in uncompromised drafts.

Keep digging.

Someone has to play devil's advocate.

I can't remember too many drafts pre-Lloyd that were completely burned like 2010 and 2012 were, those drafts that were wastes of time in the Smart era were because we traded picks for players. The argument that 2010 was compromised is nonsense considering Hawthorn walked away with two triple premiership players (one of them available at three of our picks), Eagles got Lycett and Darling, Sydney got Luke Parker and a premiership-winning key defender in Alex Johnson.

There was quality in that draft, in positions that we desperately needed depth for then and still need now. We walked away with nothing.

Tants Fyfe and Ballentyne better than all lloyds picks

Pitt went through a medical screen prior to the draft. He was an elite ball user and would have turned into an a grade imho. There's no way Lloyd and team could have foreseen Pitts condition.

There way well have been more screening possible re Simpson, but saying that not sure what the club did in that space. I can say that Simpson's personal issues were not foreseen by East Fremantle either...

10 fulltime recruiters full time medical. ask Collingwood why they not pick them. No execuse

So we should have taken Puopolo to help our talls situation?

Fyfe is better than all lloyds picks.

In other breaking news, there is a sun in our solar system.

Nothing to do with Pitt's condition. That was unfortunate, but no more unfortunate than Alex Johnston's knee injury, which occurred the same time Pitt's heart condition was discovered. Alex Johnston has not played since, but in his first two years, he played 45 games, including a premiership, as a tall defender, versus Pitt's 10 games.

We could well have done with another young tall in the 2012 finals after McPharlin went down.
So we should have taken Puopolo to help our talls situation?
What a dumb question. Unsurprising from a member of the pollyanna brigade that were blindsided by this season's implosion. Puopulo is quality, something we have an major dearth of. Even though he is not a tall he is better than the nothing we have on our list from the 2010 draft.

Puopolo went at 66 so all clubs passed including early Hawthorn. Spec pick that worked out just like Neale has for us. Pure luck. Straw picking to single him out as a lost pick.

OK, so I think I've finally worked out what this thread is about;

Hindsight is 20/20. Isn't that amazing!! Who would have figured that we can work out who the best picks in any given draft are 5-10 years after they occurred.

You're a genius OP.

I think we'll end on that note.
