Andrew McDougall

DOB: 29/6/1983

Height: 197cm

Weight: 97 kg

Playing number: 19 (2001 – 2003), 2 (2004 – 2006)

Arrived: Drafted at pick 5 in the 2000 national draft, from Perth

Debut: Round 22, 2002 vs North Melbourne – 146th Eagles player

Games: 38

Goals: 48

Departed: Traded to Western Bulldogs at the end of the 2006 season with pick 34 (Chris Schmidt) for pick 29 (Eric MacKenzie) and pick 59 (ontraded to St Kilda – Jarryd Allen).

The knock on McDougall was always that he had the size and the talent to be a player, but perhaps not the desire.

Taken with pick 5 in the national draft, McDougall had to wait almost two full years to make his AFL debut. After 15 goals in three weeks with the Demons, he was picked for the final round match against North Melbourne and held his spot for the elimination final against Essendon the following week.

McDougall started 2003 in the WAFL, but made his way into the seniors mid-season and showed a glimpse of his potential with four goals against Melbourne in August. He played 10 games for the year but unfortunately a broken jaw ruled him out of the first (and only) final against Adelaide.

The laconic key forward had what appeared to be a breakout year in 2004, playing 21 games and kicking 35 goals to finish behind only Phil Matera in the club’s goalkicking. McDougall equalled his career high of four goals against Brisbane and for a while appeared to be the team’s great white hope at centre-half-forward.

It wasn’t to be, with injuries and a lack of passion limiting him to just five games in the next two years. After managing a solitary game in the team’s premiership season, West Coast was somehow able to convince the Bulldogs, perennially in need of a key forward, to part with a fourth-round pick for McDougall. The Dogs even threw in an upgrade in the second round, which was used to nab tall defender Eric MacKenzie.

McDougall managed just five senior games for the Bulldogs in 2007 and none in all at 2008. He announced his retirement from AFL football in July of that year, shortly after his 25th birthday.

McDougall returned to Perth for the 2010 WAFL season, and in 2013 will suit up for Subiaco.

could've been anything.

if he went in the direction he looked like he was going having JK, JD and him up there with Cox or Naiti floating around would be near unstoppable.

Really thought he was going to make it after 04, he had a great year. Had everything a key forward need except for one important trait.

I played against him in high school. I remember going for a high mark in the square. Just before I grab it I see these long arms a foot above mine, reaching over and plucking it.

He was decent in high school, but I was still surprised he went that high. At the same time I reckon mcpharlin was easily twice as good.

McDougall had funny late 90s boy band hair.

Cant believe he got up and dusted off his shorts in a game while the ball was still in play next to him after a marking contest.

I always supported Doogs when he played for the Eagles. He LOOKED as if he was going to be a player, but just never quite managed to get there.

Has also now ventured into the football clinic market. Apparently he is the "Director" of the Australian Institute of Football...
I just hope the first class isn't Lack of Heart 101.

Having posted here for almost 10 years (mmm depressing..), I remember a time that plenty of the characters around here thought he was the missing piece in our next flag.

Heh.

Played colts with him at Perth, he had the talent but was mollycoddled. I can remember him sitting out training sessions with injuries that didn't seem too bad to me, and the coaches letting it happen.

Plenty of boys in that team with talent though that didn't make the most of it, like Dion Woods and Mark Coughlan (damn shame)

The best game I saw him play was vs Brisbane at Gabba in 2004? It was the game Judd kicked 5 in a half and I think A Mc. kicked 4 including some great contested marks. If he played like in did in that game every week... well he didn't. Didn't get close to that game for the rest of his career.

His talent + A. Hanson's attitude/application would have been a gun!

He was a looker i must admit and a great addition to our already exceedingly handsome squad, sadly on the field he was a total dud, almost as bad as swifty if that's even possible.
