In this interview with Worsfold, Woosha is asked about our new recruits and he says that each of them are concentrating on slightly different things. Apparently Morton is in the gym 5 or 6 times a week working on his core strength. Worsfold believes that he needs to improve on this to become a good footballer.

No surprises really, as most people have been saying he needs to add muscle for years. Hopefully we see a stronger Morton in 2013 :thumbsu:

Doubtful he'll get a game this year unless he pulls out some spectacular form in the WAFL - even still its a hard 22 to break into. 2014 will be his year once he gets his body bigger and stronger.

Sounds like a good plan. 78 kg seems a bit light for someone of that height. If he can put on up to 10 kg, add to his strength and not loose too much speed then he might well be an option; perhaps as a defender ?

Picture of Cale Morton, stolen from the pre-season thread.

There are occassional posts on various non-Eagles boards using this picture as evidence to suggest West Coast are guilty of PED use.

Looking at that frame again, it's so obvious. :p

P.S. Seriously though, keep up the good, clean work, Cale. The gains will come in time.

Can I ask where you got that figure of 78 from? In the interview?
From the profile on the first page of this thread. Is it no longer the case ? If so what is his weight now ? Aha ! My "Afl Record Season Guide 2012" gives his weight as 87 kg. Maybe a misprint in the profile ?

NEW borderline West Coast utility Cale Morton could be in for a delay in his attempts to break into the strong Eagles team because of an injury setback.

The former Melbourne midfielder is understood to have suffered a knee injury late last week and missed the Eagles opening NAB Cup games in Perth last weekend.

Morton, 23, had been listed to make his first appearances with West Coast in the triangular NAB engagements with Geelong and Fremantle in Perth, but did not play.

Thanks to Chris for point this out in the pre-season thread :thumbsu:

In this interview the following question is raised by Karl Langdon and answered by Will Schofield

Q. Is Cale Morton going to be playing this week?

A. Cale was good to go 2 weeks ago and on the Friday buckled his knee in the very final training session, with about 5 minutes to go in the training session, so, we haven't done team selection or anything yet, but he's definitely in the mix.

He's had a really good pre-season. I spent a bit of time with him off the ground, he's a really good fella, and I think we're pretty lucky to get him.

He's been talking himself up as a good share - he's a top 4 draft pick and we've got him for 88, so best value you can get, I think.

Cale needs the Matt Rosa treatment. Rosa was drafted in 2004, but didn't hit his straps as a player until 2009. While Rosa could find the pill in the early years, just as Cale could, Rosa and going hard into contests couldn't be mentioned in the same sentence with a straight face until his 5th season. Cale has a similar issue. Now if there's any player on the Eagles list that Cale could emulate, it's Rosa. As a tall wingman, that can run all day, like Rosa, he could become a player if only he took some performance enhancing cement injections, just as Rosa did. Until he does, Cale's going to be a fringe dweller and nothing more.

My memory of Rosa's early performances for the Eagles are that he still went in hard for the ball but just didn't have the weight and strength to prevail against bigger midfielders and got knocked off the ball easily.

Everyone's favourite Morton played his first match of the season on Saturday, lining up for East Perth against his original WAFL club, Claremont. East Perth went down by 17 and only collected 255 possessions.

Morton's stats - 14 disposals, 11 kicks, 3 handballs, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 0 hit outs, 3 inside 50's, 0 goals, 0 behinds.

Without being sure of how much ground time he got it's hard to read too much into the stats but 14 possessions is a bit low for a guy who averages 19 at AFL level. It's also interesting he had almost 4 kicks for every handball; that probably suggests he played quite outside, which we know is his thing.

There are quite frequent bits of pieces of news about Morton, often suggesting that he's not too far outside the best 22.

Take this one, for example:

Cale Morton and Mark Hutchings, who were also enticed to the club through the trade period, offering further class and depth, will also press for inclusion. Both have impressed through training and pre-season matches and are likely to be discussed as the match committee searches for the winning formula to start the 2013 campaign.

But then I remember that he hasn't played a pre-season or NAB cup game for West Coast and begin to wonder if reality is backing this (relative) hype.

I look forward to finding out.

He's been named by EP for Saturday - hopefully he shows that he wants it enough to play for WCE as soon as a spot come up.

Last weekend in the WAFL Morton had 10K, 3Hb, 6M, 1T, 0G, 0B, 0FF, 2FA.

I'm watching him now against Peel in round 2 and the commentators mentioned that his coach called him "very disappointing" in round 1. Hopefully he hit form.

Last weekend Cale had - 19D, 10K, 9Hb, 2M, 1T, 0G, 1B, 2FF, 1FA.

That lifts his averages to a more respectable 16 disposals, 4 marks and 2.5 tackles per game. Hopefully the upwards trajectory continues today against Subiaco. He's been named on a wing, possibly against Brett Mahoney, who had 29 possessions last weekend.

Morton Leads Team in Inside 50's.

Today Morton had 18 disposals, (14k, 4hbs), 1 mark and 1 tackle but most importantly he lead East Perth in inside 50's, with 8.

He's now averaging 16.7 disposals per game and he's really making is touches count, kicking the ball on 68% of possessions (34k, 16hb's).

As a result of those kicking stats, I'm going to go ahead and infer that he's playing an outside role. I'm also going to say that he probably played wing/half forward today, based on that inside 50's stat.

Anyhow, good job, Mitch! Now let's kick her up a notch and start finding the ball like we did early on for Melbourne.

Morton his own harshest critic

According to the official West Coast WAFL write up, Cale felt his last WAFL game was short of the expectations he places on himself.

Morton collected 9 possessions and laid 2 crunching tackles, while also impacting the scoreboard when most of the East Perth players couldn't.

Morton's aerobic capacity was on display for large portions of the match as he cruised between 50 metre arcs with ease, displaying his now famous gazelle-like stride.

Often criticised for his lack of ferocity in the contest, Morton, on at least one occasion, laid a solid bump in a bid to inspire his side.

Unfortunately his bravery did not manage to lift the Royal who were soundly beaten by 59 points.

Stats: 9 disposals (6k, 3hb), 3M, 2T, 1G, 1FF, 1FA.
Season averages: 14.8D, 3M, 2.3T.

Are East Perth getting thumped most weeks? We already know he's not the type of player you want if that's happening.

Yes and no. They're 1-3 and they have the worst percentage in the league but they've played (and been thumped by) the best 2 sides in the league. They beat Peel and narrowly lost to Subi so they may end up just outside the top 4, IMO,... In the short term, I assume the fixture will open up a bit for them.

fair enough. He's a fair weather player (I dont mean that necessarily in a bad way), in that I think he'll shine in a team that is up and about, not so much in a struggling team.

Yeah, I agree.

More a receiver than a ball winner. He lives and dies by how well his ball winners are playing... Personally, I believe it's to too great an extent.

Okay so Morton had a bad game, and he has acknowledged that. The question now is how will he respond ? For him to force his way into the Eagles he needs to come back with a much better performance next time out (and the time after that, etc )
