Good friend of mine, was involved at Mount Waverley Football club when Ian Bremner was appointed senior coach back in the eighties, great bloke lived in Mount Waverley but has since moved closer to the city. often see him at Hawthorn games and in Tassie when the Hawks play.

Has kept in good shape, was a good footballer on the half back line and very tough.

One of my favourites, rarely played a bad game.

He had sticky fingers and could fly with the best of them
It was a real treat in the 70's watching high flyers like Peter Knights and Ian Bremner taking screamers every week!

To have Ian Bremner and Peter Knights in the same team was worth the price of entry and more. What a half back line - Norm Bussell, Peter Knights and Ian Bremner.

Bremner is one of the very best half backs I have seen at Hawthorn and as Dave23 said a brilliant aerialist. Have a few items in my scrap books on this champ. Will come back in later when I dig them out of the morgue.

Ah yes, the great Normie Bussell.

He was one of those typical John Kennedy footballers: couldn't mark, couldn't kick, could barely run, but could he play football!

He was great in the 1971 Premiership, as was Ian Bremner.

Met Ian at the Glenferrie pub on the Sunday after the G/F last year. I'm a bit young to recall him playing but I've been told one of the hardest blokes going around. Champion bloke too add as well. Had heaps of time just to chat & chew the fat.

Good description. Many youngsters will ask why is he so revered.

Well, if any ever get the chance ask Kevin Sheedy about big Norm. If Sheeds recovers from the heart attack he may be able to gasp out FEAR.

However, he could scare the sh1t out of the opposition.

He wasn't the tallest defender but could hold his own against a bigger opponent. He was one of our best in the 1975 GF loss.

True story, I wanted his number 20 on my Hawks jumper but our local sports shop didn't have any 2's. I couldn't well be number zero, so went for Michael Moncrieff's number 6 instead. My mother then sewed the number onto the jumper upside-down !

Does anyone know if Ian Bremner had a nickname? & if so,what it was?

Only saw him from 74-76 & as a kid, & often confused him with Knights due to the mop of blonde hair. It's nice to know we got one over the Pies!:)
His nickname was 'squirrel', tough player that slotted into an impassable '70s half back line. Bremner - Knights - O'Halloran/Jaworski etc... was definitely a freakish mark too.

I trust you see the irony in THAT answer!.....

Was it because he had a certain propensity?....You know....As in the 'Squirrel grip'?

Ian Bremner was one of the three or four suggestions to play FF in '72 after Hudson did his knee, shows how desperate they were, he had no idea how to play forward. Knights ended up down there for a while, fantastic mark, shocking kick.. was far better as a CHF swing man later in his career.

I remember Ian Bremner well. Typical tough Hawthorn half back flanker.
Somewhere in the back of my brain I recall him being called Ian Buddy Bremner.
Hope I am not getting senile!
