Essendon has turned out to be somewhat of a footnote in the career of Jordan Bannister. The son of a boxer, Bannister began his playing career at Therry Penola, before moving on to the Calder Cannons, where he caught the eye of the Bombers. Drafted after the 2000 premiership win, Bannister played his first game at AFL level in round twelve the following year, playing as a lock-down defender. He was to spend his three years in and out of the side, before a collarbone injury ended his 2003 season. Following this he was delisted by the club, and was picked up by Carlton, where he played for six years.

Since being delisted by Carlton, Bannister has continued his close association with football, putting his endurance skills to good use by becoming an umpire. The AFL wished to recruit former players and turn them into umpires at AFL level. After two years, he did exactly that, umpiring his first game in round one of 2012, between North Melbourne and his old club, Essendon. The following year he was to suddenly retire from umpiring to care for his brother, Rick, who had become a quadraplegic following an accident. Rick passed away in September 2014, and Bannister has since returned to the umpiring fold.

Good to hear he has returned to umpiring, although the reasons why are obviously unfortunate. I didn't know about that.
