DOB: 16/9/64

Height: 183 cms
Weight: 88 kgs

Recruited From: Glenelg (SA)

Debut: Round 1 1988 V Carlton

Games: 97
Goals: 144

Tony Hall moved from Glenelg to Hawthorn in 1988 and made an immediate impression in his first season. Not only did he play in a premiership side, he finished fourth in the Brownlow and was selected in the All-Australian team.

Hall wasn't overly fast or flashy, but he was as strong as an ox, and had a vice-like grip. Just as Hall looked to be on the verge of something special, he was cut down by a team mate! Hall's knee buckled under the pressure of an Andy Collins tackle during the Victoria vs South Australia state game. Hall returned in time for the 1991 premiership, and while he was a great contributor for the club, he probably never reached the heights he might have if not for the injury.

Hall moved to the Adelaide Crows in 1994.

Where is he now? Works at Medibank back in Melbourne

One of my all time favourite players. I was just devastated when he did that knee - meant we never got to see the best of him.

He took the other wing or played half-forward flank and was amazing in those years before the club - great mark for his size and great disposal by hand or foot.

Hally doing his knee in that match at the 'G was the reason I wanted State footy abolished!
Was devastated at what happened, adding insult to injury because it was Andy Collins who tackled him!

He was a superb mark, courageous and a great kick, and could play as a half forward or on the wing with devastating results

Was never the same after his injury, finishing back home at the Crows, where he had his car keyed because it still had Victorian number plates on!

Is still very good mates with Dermie, and loves a surf

He kicked a bag against Sydney near the end of 1993. I got my first guernsey at the end of 1993 and wanted number 6 on it.

Well he left that year before I put the number on so I turned it upside down and become one of the first to have Crawford on my back.

Worked alright if you ask me.

What people don't realise is, Hall was meant to come to Hawthorn in 1987 but hurt his knee in the SANFL in 1986 and sat out most of 1987( I think he played the finals with Glenelg)
Two knee recos in 3 years how good could he have been

I loved Tony Hall. Great half forward and winger. VERY skillful, from my memory, and was just a star. I am not sure who we have now that is like him, maybe Breust but Hally was a better runner. I think he was almost a cross between Isaac Smith and Breust but not as good an endurance athlete as Smithy (no-one was back then).

My strongest memory of him was when that gutless dog Hinkley took him out with a DELIBERATE horizontal elbow to the head in the second quarter of the 1991 Second Semi.

The MORONS on the TV and radio like Tim "God I'm a tossbag" LANE argued that it was not reportable because that dog was clean player who did not do things like that in spite of the evidence before their eyes. God I was pissed off. It is interesting to reflect how little things have changed with Watson and the drug cheating saga, the Viney travesty "he never done nuffing" except change direction break a players jaw who was trying to gather the ball. A little bit too much like Sewell v Lloyd for my liking.

Hall was a great player and a personal favourite. I loved his jack in the box vertical leap marking style. Unfortunately that horrendous knee blow out really meant that we never saw what he could do later in his career. A lot like Bucky in that regard.

I know I've mentioned it before on other threads, but prior to that first knee injury at Glenelg he was just a truly amazing player. And boy, could he pull in a high mark.

It's a shame Hawthorn & football in general never got to see him at his best, because his best was unbelievable.

Hall played on the HB flank for Glenelg in their 1985 premiership team. When Kernahan left for Carlton in 1986, Glenelg simply shifted Hall to CHF where he kicked 73 goals and they went back to back. He kicked 6 in that Grand Final.

I remember when he returned to Adelaide to play for the Crows, he still had Victoria registration plates on his car, parked it in the Football Park car park, and it was vandalized after the Crows lost to a Victorian team.

i remember in 1992 v brisbane bears at carrara, we basically trailled all day, and by as much as 21 points mid last qtr. It was Tony Hall who took a strong grab about 40 metres out on a tightish angle, went back and slotted the goal with about 30 seconds remaining, and we won by 4 points!

Haha I remember that game, because I was at home alone watching, and midway through the last qrt I got so peed off I put a hole in the wall with my fist, Al Clarkson style!
I was renting with mates, and had to quickly get to the hardware shop and fix the hole before anyone got home!

I got away with it!

Loved Hally. Shame about the knee, then leaving for Adelaide. Was just so graceful in his movement, awesome over his head for a mid-size forward and classy to boot. Shame he missed that year from the knee, could have been anything.

I had the pleasure of watching Hall in 1986 when he had two good knees. He had great pace and had he retained this, I think there would have been a very real chance of him being SA's most talented recruit, with the exception of Darren Jarman.

It was a real shame to see him lose his pace, and I recall one night game against North where his lack of pace nearly lost us the game as he was unable to get to his opponent. The 1986 edition of Hall would have been taken the VFL by storm.

A great player. Loved the way he went about his footy.

To think we had Bucky and Hall nominally on them half forward flanks.

God, it was a team we had back then. Unless you saw them in action during that era, it's almost impossible to conceive of the riches we had.

Hall was like the icing on the cake. Just appeared. Slotted right in.

I hope that time does not diminish the greatness we had in that back to back period.

And to think we had Morrissey lurking around as well. Those who saw it were incredibly fortunate.

I know I am.

The Hall/Collins incident was a massive blow and one of my most disappointing moments as a Hawk fan. Could not find any marking footage but this State of Origin goal was a cracker drop punt and all.
