Welsh, Crows turmoil

TROUBLED Scott Welsh is in dispute with Adelaide and possibly on his way out of West Lakes.

In what could be another damaging off-season blow to the Crows, the club's leading goalkicker has reached a "stalemate" on a new contract offer from Adelaide and is exploring his options.

"Negotiations on a new contract for Scott have broken down," Crows football operations manager John Reid said.

"We want him to stay and have offered him a deal but at this stage he's not happy with that and we're at an impasse."

Reid said Adelaide had offered out-of-contract Welsh – its third greatest goalkicker with 270, behind only retired Tony Modra (440) and Mark Ricciuto (292) – a new one-year deal. But Welsh wants some incentives attached to the 12 months which would, if reached, guarantee him a second year.

Given 28-year-old Welsh's latest off-field indiscretions – in September he was at the centre of a police report by an 18-year-old woman outside a Hindley St nightclub – the Crows are refusing to budge on their original offer.

"At the moment Scott wants more than we are prepared to offer," Reid said.

"Where it goes from here is up to them (Welsh and his manager, Craig Vozzo), so we'll see what happens."

Vozzo did not want to comment yesterday, simply agreeing with Reid's assessment that Welsh wasn't happy with what he had been offered and negotiations had reached a stalemate.

"I don't want to go into it in any more detail," he said, also refusing to confirm whether there was a behavioural clause in Welsh's contract. It is understood Welsh – who has won Adelaide's leading goalkicker title four times – is sounding out Victorian clubs to see if there is any interest in him across the board.

Melbourne is believed to be one club which has expressed some desire to talk to him.

The loss of Welsh – who could enter the pre-season draft – would be another blow to Adelaide in this off-season of player upheaval.

The Crows, who are refusing to be dictated to by players, already have lost two talls they wanted to keep – Ben Hudson (to the Western Bulldogs) and John Meesen (Melbourne) – while they traded away Martin Mattner and delisted the popular Jason Torney and Matthew Bode.

Leading forward Welsh is their No. 1 and most accurate goalkicker.

While he has had a suspect body and has made some questionable off-field decisions, he is a focal point in a team which lacks goalkickers.

In 165 AFL games since 1996, including 30 for the Kangaroos, Welsh has booted 300 goals, including a team-high 49 this year.

PRE-SEASON training for Adelaide's one-to-four-year players starts on Monday.

The rest of the squad will start building for 2008 the following week.
