I haven't bothered to check out just what he came up with, but that one is a bit over the top. James Clement was a fantastic player but while perhaps a reasonable candidate as one of the best 25 Collingwood players in the last 50 years he's not close to being one of the competition's best 25 in that period by any means! Apparently he left Gary Ablett snr. off his list, if that's true then it's just bizarre, he's the best footballer I've seen in about 50 years of watching the game!!

Speaking of such things (and I imagine Malthouse didn't name our current coach as one of his top 25?!) as someone who loves picking teams/best of lists I tend to check out such things that are posted elsewhere on BigFooty and more and more I see Nathan Buckley's extraordinary career being ignored/disrespected. Clearly he was one of the greats of his era, and one of the finest our club has ever had. Perhaps it's the same sort of anti-Collingwood bias that saw us get no players at all in the official Team of the Century that's at play here! Probably twenty years from now Buckley will be talked about as "just a good ordinary player"!!
Yes he left off Gary Ablett Snr and Junior too.
I almost think he did so he could justify leaving Nathan out.
But who knows.

He may just have a psychotic need to be the centre of attention or quirky.
Look at me, look at me, I'm saying something different, I'm Mick, look at me.

Ofcourse that is his opinion but to me Mick always comes across as having some odd agenda.

I agree. Still wonder what might have happened if Jason had've played the 2002GF. He'd had a great year till then.
He was a star that year, then it fell away as he was worked out.
But what a year.

Do you remember David Cloke appearing at the tribunal in a Mikes Hard Lemonade T Shirt?

Ahh David Cloke, he was his own man, beating to the drum.... Ka-Ching......

Thanks for that. Yes, just bizarre stuff. Perhaps he thought he'd get plenty of attention for leaving Gary snr. out, I mean how the hell could you?!

Rupert Betheras kicking two goals vs the Lions in a low scoring affair. Got us over the line. It was 2001 I think. It was the first time I can remember having belief that my team could make a run at a Grand Final. Most of my conscious footy memory was entrenched in the mediocre teams of the mid and late 90's. Thanks Rupe!

Paul Licurias 40 plus possessions against Port Adelaide to steal an unlikely final victory. I also won an indoor soccer grand final that night. A great night.

Burns hit on Voss.

A cold wet game at the MCG vs Geelong. First time I went to the footy. Saw Sav Rocca kick a goal from outside 50. We lost but I was stoked to see my hero kick a monster goal.

Anthony's free kick and goal after the siren vs Adelaide. That was a really happy time in my life and that was an awesome cherry on top.

Every intercept mark Clement took. Especially against the Lions. My all time favourite Pie.
2002 in fact, and it was 3 goals! We got up by 3 points. He played against Brisbane 4 times, that was his only win!

He qualifies as another "gift" from Fremantle, given that he was on their Rookie List, but discarded. Interesting to see just how highly you rate James Clement, he was indeed a wonderful player, certainly one of the better defenders I've seen in a Collingwood side.

Ray Shaw, brave stoic captain through some tragic GF losses

Tony Shaw, courageous captain in a stunning GF win

Heath Shaw, crazy exciting madman in defence, famed for the librarian-like smother of the century

Can even squeeze in Rhyce Shaw, although we didn't see his best at the Pies

A Collingwood dynasty:):(

VFL park 1990 V Essendon about 3rd last round of the season. Two best sides in the comp looking for top spot. Ball about 20m out from our goal, one goal in it, last quarter.

Loose ball, with about 5 players looking at it. For a kid it looked like time stood still and then carnage as 4-5 players decided it was theres. My most vivid image was Gavin Brown (who else) just diving in head first and smashing his body against all the other bodies in mid air. The most exhilarating moment I had witnessed close up..and it only ended up being a ball up.

Up till then I played footy in a manner that Neil Balme would describe as 'he is a nice player'. That moment changed the way I played footy.

About 6- 7 weeks later there was a new more profound memory...winning the first flag in my lifetime.

EDIT - found a link to that play - about 50sec mark

And if I recall we didn't win that game v Essendon going down by 6 points.

If I'm not mistaken Terry Keys had a long shot for goal to tie the game at the death?

But then we played Essendon twice in the finals and it's safe to say we won those big time :)

I don't wonder, for mine there's little doubt we win with Jason Cloke. Lynch kicked 4 and Akermanis got a late crumb, it's doubtful either happen with Cloke filling the hole. With Cloke out however I wonder if selecting wet weather specialist McGough instead of Molloy would have made a difference.

Yep.
Only it was a Sunday afternoon.

This pisses me off so much. It was 1996 and we had lost 8 matches in a row after being 4-2. We were struggling and nothing was going well and there were rumours of a Fitzroy merger in the air. We were broke and Eddie was still on the Footy Show and a long way from being our saviour.

1996 was the year of the Roo. They were flying and all year it was about Carey and Corey and North were on top of the ladder going into this match and were easy premiership favourites. Our key defenders were a 20 year old Schauble and 188cm Gavin Crossisca. Presti played but we all thought he was a forward and it was his fifth game only. Anthony Rocca was still in Sydney and Sav was having a shocker year 20 goals behind where he was at the same stage in 1995 (we were expecting him to be a consistent 100 plus goal kicker).

The first two contests against SChauble Carey won easily and it looked like we were going down by a lot halfway through the first quarter. Then it happened. Bucks moved onto Carey. He killed him. Carey kicked one more Joe the goose goal for the game and you almost felt sorry for him. The King was dethroned by Bucks. Even though he was shorter Bucks looked more powerful one on one, killed him for speed and was deadly by foot. He was the leading possession getter on the ground with 31 touches and we broke the eight game losing streak against the eventual premiers by 10 goals. Buck's got one brownlow vote. Serially underrated.

The rematch happened in 1998. Carey's revenge. Read about it in his book. When he squared the ledger against Bucks. Showed him who was King. They beat us by about 5 goals. Carey kicked 4. Bucks played on Carey in patches. So did Gavin Brown. My recollection gives all 4 against Rowdy (he was conceding way too much size and Shawry had played him key back too often that year). Everyone who saw those two matches know Bucks had his measure. The King? maybe against young defenders with no support.

If you have 11 minutes great video of season 1990 to music. Watch for some amazing highlights of Daicos, Millane & Brown

Edit- oops sorry wrong video and now I can't find the actual video I wanted to post.

I think a forgotten player who was hampered by injuries but could have been an all time great if he was fit was Ricky Barham. His first game he played against Rodney Eade who was a very very good player.. and kicked 5 goals FROM A WING. From memory he tied with Paul Van Der Haar for best first year player that year. He also took one of the best all time marks one handed and upside down AND IT DIDNT EVEN GET MARK OF THE WEEK cos they gave it to Paul Van Der Haar again (the 12 year old inside me is still dirty about that)
Played in all the grand final losses, career wasnt really long enough.

And what about Neville? I always thought Nifty Nev was the most talented of the original Shaw's, too bad he didn't have the commitment.

Did you see who the other pies in that pack were? Pants came from the opposite side to Rowdy and got there first. (the toughest of the tough those two) and Terry Keays (the 16 year old prodigy) was the number 14, he could have been anything that kid, just couldn't deal with the pressure of being a senior Footballer....(like an early Dane Swan)

Great video of Ricky Barham there. He really was a racehorse wasn't he? Great winger, quick and deadly around the goals. I seem to remember him taking a huge pack mark in a final against Fitzroy. He usually played well in big games.

There are no substitues _Greening _ I was at Vic park in '71 when he tore Geelong to shreds - 30 kicks and 20 handballs is a master class. John just ripped them several new ones that day.
And of course in the year that he got sniped in round 14 he finished 7th in the Brownlow - in the form he was in that year injury was the only thing barring him from the Brownlow.
NEVER mention O'Day or his thug cop coach in my presence.

People rave about Marty Clarke's performance in the 2007 finals series but far more telling was the performances of Sean Ruslinf through it. He was immense - we barely missed a rusty old bloke by the name of Chris Tarrant.

Imagine if we'd had him and Clarke both fit and firing through our dominant years. Could be two or three flags richer. :(

Remember Bucks great day against Carey well. Also remember a few seasons earlier when Rowdy went to full back when GAS was on fire one day. Rowdy wouldn't let him have a touch, was just a maniac in the contest.

Len Thompson....I still have a vivid memory of the big bloke tearing through Centre Half Forward and kicking a brilliant goal against the Tigers in the 1973 Prelim. While he played at CHF that day we couldn't lose, then Jenkin got injured Thommo got swung into the ruck and our forward structure broke down.(sigh)
The best tap ruckman I can remember from any club. I used to own a book that featured a frame by frame breakdown of his centre bounce work with Wayne Richardson. Pure gold.
