Walking with "Polly Farmer " tonight, discussing a Geelong team made up of the MOST EXCITING players we've had. Not necessarily the best, but those that made the game more spectacular and watchable.
This looks to be a pretty good line-up.
Thoughts?
FB J Hawkins Scarlett Wojcinski
HB Hinkley Graham Marshall
C Turner Alistair Lord Motlop
HF Sharrock Mooney Ablett snr
FF Newman Brownless Lindner
R Farmer Ablett jnr Goggin
IC G Hocking Jackson S Johnson R Burns
EMER P Lynch, Bizzell, Sidebottom
Sure there are some excitement machines missing there, and I would have loved a spot for Paul Lynch, maybe instead of Burns. Bill Ryan and Paul Vinar also had moments of thrill factor

Coach? I never saw him play, sadly.
Can't say Sidebottom ever did anything exciting while wearing Geelong colours except miss a bus. Here's the team of exciting players that I saw & remember:Walking with "Polly Farmer " tonight, discussing a Geelong team made up of the MOST EXCITING players we've had. HF: David Clarke - Bill Ryan - Steve Johnson
F: Ronnie Burns - Gary Ablett Snr - Gavin Excell

Haven't thought of Jeffreys for YEARS!!! He used to be one of my favourite players.Nice get Sttew
Tallish left footer with an insane leap , saw him take an absolute screamer in the goalsquare at Princes Park. Pack of about 10 in the goalquare and he lept over the top of them all from a run up at the back - brearhtaking![]()
Butch and Paul Jeffreys were favourites of mine too, as was Peter Doyle. Can't say Tom Floyd did much for me back then, but that I can remember his number 37 says something.Haven't thought of Jeffreys for YEARS!!! He used to be one of my favourite players.

One player that I've been waiting to mention in this thread is Jeff Cassidy. All I remember right now about him is that he had an enormous kick on him. Was he a left-footer as well, F2G?
Sadly, another player whose career was cut short by injury.

It wasn't a rule , just my own experience. Bobby Davis excited me as a coach- imagine him as a player.Sorry, Vdubs, didn't realise the qualifier of 'players we've had that you have seen play' was in operation. Was wondering how we assess players from our earlier days against those of more recent generations.
Makes sense now.
Here are a couple of videos for your enjoyment, VdubsIt wasn't a rule , just my own experience. Bobby Davis excited me as a coach- imagine him as a player.
But I never include Sir Don in cricket teams either.
Players that excite, get you to want to watch them.
Benny Graham I think is underrated here. I see sttew omitted him for PJ, and though I loved Jefferies, Benny excited us for a lot longer imho. Those amazing kickouts from FB, and his accomplished marking. He actually was a great FB for a while there.
Might have to keep an eye on the kicking of Motlop and McCarthyButch and Paul Jeffreys were favourites of mine too, as was Peter Doyle. Can't say Tom Floyd did much for me back then, but that I can remember his number 37 says something.
Cassidy was an exquisite r foot kick, but spent a lot of time in the injury room. Exactly my d.o.b. too. And born in the same hospital. He was near bog in a reserves GF; missed a lot of senior games.
PJ was a Goggin special, really rated him, along with Mark Bos, and that wasn't a bad back line for effectiveness and thrills combined- MALARKEY, HAWKINS, BOS, TOOHEY, JEFFREYS, NANKERVIS.
I used to love watching Jefferies soar for a mark, but his left footers were unusually average.
How many of our leapers were average kicks?? RYAN, HAWKINS, JEFFREYS, JOHNSON- altitude sickness?
Doyle (36) was another Paul Lynch- highly skilled but cruelled by injury, finally succumbing to a knee.
My sister loved these 2, not sure if it was about their footy skills all that much either.Haven't thought of Jeffreys for YEARS!!! He used to be one of my favourite players.

Lol- I was just looking at Jeff Cassidy's photo... He reminds me of a pop star from the 60s or 70s. (can't think who, though.) That might be why your sister was keenMy sister loved these 2, not sure if it was about their footy skills all that much either.
On that photo, David Cassidy/Leo Sayer hybrid.Lol- I was just looking at Jeff Cassidy's photo... He reminds me of a pop star from the 60s or 70s. (can't think who, though.) That might be why your sister was keen![]()
One of the biggest losses of a player I have seen in my years of following Geelong.what was Bernard Toohey like and did he play more as a defender rather than a forward?
what was Bernard Toohey like and did he play more as a defender rather than a forward?
That's funny- David Cassidy was the first name I looked up but he had straight hair and a fringe so I figured I'd only associated the two (Jeff and David) because of their surname. On that photo, David Cassidy/Leo Sayer hybrid.
But Paul Jeffreys was a stunning looking guy by all reports.
Nice get Sttew

Think your views there are based on his far fewer games at Geelong. He was the state of the art as a hbf back then. Milburn and Mackie are exceptional, but they stayed at Geelong. Toohey's departure def took the gloss off his appeal to many of us, don't you think? There was a game against Richmond (82) when they were very strong at KP - Geelong were way behind - and they moved Toohey to full forward - and i think je kicked 5 goals in the last qtr
He was no world beater Bobby - he would fit into that classic Jack Dyer description of - a good ordinary footballer
Was he better than Milburn - No - Was he better than Mackie - No
Actually - after he finished his Swans stint - he wanted to move back to Melbourne - and Geelong offered to recruit him ( Blight era) - instead he chose the Bull Dogs - god only knows why- probably thought he was a better chance of getting a game with them
Jeffreys had alot of talent - really another frustrating Geelong player
David Rhys Jones - who was involved in so many punch ups - but he said the most frightened hes ever been - is when Jeffreys went beserk that day at Princess St- someone might put up the vision - i reckon Jeffreys would have made a better boxer than footballer - he was throwing some hay makers that day
Lousy choice on my part, agree. I did preface this list of exciting players by saying not necessarily our best, but he never played one exciting game for us iirc. It was more his name.Having experienced first hand the ethos displayed by Gary Sidebottom when captain at StKilda, (sacked the next year) and remembering he was suspended by Geelong because of his lousy attitude, I would suggest he is never included in a team of greats of Geelong FC….not even as an emergency.
The guy was a clown.
I have been admonished for Sidebottom, appropriately, he is officially off my list. Can't say Sidebottom ever did anything exciting while wearing Geelong colours except miss a bus. Here's the team of exciting players that I saw & remember:
