It's Wade - with hair.
EFA

:D

Yeah, I thought it was Wade - gee he's a funny bu***r, I've been to a couple of Geelong functions + Doug Wade will hop up + speak. He's hilarious, love it when he talks about his hair product business he had with Sam Newman. Once he + Billy Brownless get going together, I nearly wet my pants!

Just make sure you keep them on he's still fathering kids.:D

Simon 'Biscuits' Arnott played every game in 1999 but his form dropped + he was delisted in 2000. He works at his old school, Wesley College, where he runs the Sport department.

Bomber didn't rate him, so no matter how well he played in the VFL, or the odd occasion he got picked in the AFL in 2000, he was finished at the club. Gary Ayres nearly took him in the draft for Adelaide, but if I recall there was some list issue which meant they couldn't get him on there. Went on to play in about a half dozen flags for Centrals anyway.

yeh Bruce was unreal!
At one point, he was just as dominant as Ablett and both were on either flank terrorizing defenses.

Again, what happened to him?
Did he get too old or something because he was one of our best players in the 89 grand final and then six games later, he was gone

The Prez is currently a pretty successful wine rep in SA.

impressive for a ruck to boot that many goals.
Shame the hit-out stats were never accumulated back then. Only played 86 games though and finished at 27.

His son Mark was a good player himself. Tough as nails too. Kind of like Milburn with a slightly harder edge.
He's wearing the no10 Hawthorn jumper in the video.

Thanks, Vdubs. Glad to see someone else on here recognised how brilliant this guy was.

Just so rarely beaten in a contest and simply can't remember him playing a really poor game.

So tough to play against but very good with the ball in hand as well.

Growing up in the 80's, he was just about my favourite player. So reliable and always seemed to be giving it everything (and getting the best out of himself at the same time). Definitely not the most talented in that generation at the hoops but more than made up for it with his supreme application to the task at hand.

I'll never forget running onto the ground at Carrara after a match against the Bad News Bears to slap him on the back. Ended up running past all the other so-called superstars of the day to make sure I got to him before he headed off the ground. When I got there (and probably whacked him way too hard on the back due to my enthusiasm) he looked at me like I was totally mad (which I probably was).

I get the impression he hadn't seen that many kids running full pelt to get around him after a game when he shared the stage with players like Ablett, Bews, Couch and the rest. Whatever he really thought, I was just glad to have had that brief moment to give some kudos to a bloke who I never believed got the adulation he deserved during his career.

Having said that, he picked up two Carjis before he retired (and played for Victoria several times). So maybe more people agreed with me about how good he really was than I ever realised.:$

#24 will always be a number I remember very fondly at the Cats. While Jed might end up playing a role in that, the unheralded country boy from Wandella will always be at the forefront of my thoughts.

Thanks for the memories, Bosy.:thumbsu:

A lot of those guys got far more money playing country footy.
But I think he actually went back to run a farm or something.

Other than being a bit of a fig jam he had zero discipline in 1990.
I can clearly remember seeing him smashed at the Lyric every 2nd weekend in 1990.

The Lyric, pfffffffffft.

Try the old Woolly nightclub. Used to see a lot of them crawling up and down the stairs there.

$20 all you could drink Friday nights from 9pm until 3am during the footy season. Used to love the weekends when we'd have a bye in the local comp.:drunk:

The Valley Inn then went to $18 I think, the Woolly countered with $15 and then The Sundowner out in Corio ended up at $12.

Not surprisingly it was at the point in time that there was a huge crack down on those sorts of things and one of the consequences also was the compulsory licencing of bouncers in Victoria, following on from all the mayhem that would ensue at these places.

The straw that broke the camel's back was at least a busload of bouncers from Melbourne coming down and starting a massive brawl with the bouncers at the Woolly. They were sick of the bad reputation they were all getting on the back of what was going on in Geelong.

Anyway, I digress.

do you know what happened to Lindner? Was he part of a trade in heading back to Adelaide and if so, who did we get for him, do you know?

Just googling drafts now to see if anything was gained for him.

While looking, I've just had a look at the 1989 draft (forgot that Adelaide started up in ''91 and not '90)

In all the various drafts of '89, Geelong drafted or traded in 14 players pre-season and during the mid-year draft. Only 3 of them actually played a game, Poole from Richmond played 54, Shane Crothers a local lad from Grovie played 4 and Bret Bailey from Melbourne played 1 game.

Having a quick look, couldn't find anything about the Crows start-up.

Another fantastic game of football I saw - probably the best I've ever seen as an exhibition of skill - was between Geelong and South Melbourne at the Junction Oval in about 1978? It was something like 24 goals to 23 goals and Geelong won by ~ 9 points maybe. I remembered Larry Donahue had 8 kicks for 8 goals and couldn't miss - absolutely unbelievable kicking for goal (actually looking at the stats he had 12 kicks - funny how your memory plays tricks!).

Here's the link http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/1978/091619780819.html - 50 goals in all!!

Hmm... yeah.. ask Dermie how hard-hitting Mark was ;)

I notice John Scarlett was by then a SM player playing against us.

Incredible stats in this match - 70 frees and Geelong got 39!!!, 32 goals in the first half and 17 goals in the first quarter.

Compare this with some of the negative stuff dished up today - There was a goal every 2.5 minutes and a free paid every 1.5 minutes!!!!
After finding that stat about Geelong getting 39 frees in the South Melbourne game, I just had to dig up the exact opposite free kick stat in 2005, notably

http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/2005/091420050828.html

In this game that will go down in INFAMY (even though we won by a point) - Geelong 6 frees / Richmond 13 frees (including A. Krakouer 6 frees)!!!

YES - Andrew Krakouer got as many free kicks as the entire Geelong team!!!!!

You remember correctly, pollyfarmer. Here are some highlights from that game. 4th highest scoring match of all time:

That was really weird we actually loan Scarlett to South Melbourne half way through the 1977 season, and made it permanent in 78,imagin that happening today no way.
