I enjoy Geelong fans knocking down trade suggestions (like a first rounder and Horlin-Smith, who is average anyway) because they "won't be paying overs". Err, for a player like Dangerfield, Duncan + first rounder isn't overs. You're still getting an absolute steal.
I am not knocking Dangers worth; he is worth that absolutely. I just don't think Geelong would offer that.

what do people think Selwood is on?
Hawkins?

and if they land Henderson, what will he want?....
Selwood is our highest paid player on approx $850k.

Hawkins and the Dangerfield offer slightly less than that.

$450-500 is what has been bandied around in the media for Henderson.

Don't forget over the past 12 months, we have cleared the following from our list:

Varcoe - approx $450k
Johnson - approx $500k
McIntosh - approx $400k
Kelly - approx $350-400k
Stokes - approx $350k
Rivers - approx $250-300k

They really won't. Alot of people are acting like the Geelong administration are idiots, which they clearly aren't. They will offer a decent reasonable trade to Adelaide; they aren't going to gut their list trying to get him there like Sydney did with Franklin. Thats not how they operate, thats not how they ever operate. It would be amazing if Dangerfield were there next year, but at the same time, Geelong don't lose anything here; they never had Danger to start off with, and if they don't get him, they will continue about their business. 800k a year is an example of how the Cats don't bend over backwards for one player as Danger could easily easily get more elsewhere if he wanted.
Exactly. Geelong could offer 1.2 mil and Adelaide wouldn't match. But then you run the risk of losing a Duncan, or not re-signing Motlop, or you have to phase out aging champions who are still best 22 earlier than desired (e.g. guys like Enright, Taylor and Bartel).

Far better off offering a deal the Crows can and will match, and giving up a first rounder and player who is lesser than Duncan/Motlop etc (e.g. GHS or Murdoch). Meet the Crows halfway, maybe swap of 2nd or 3rd round picks etc.

Why are Geelong fans acting like the victims here? You're going to have to give up more than Horlin-Smith and a 1st rounder. Horlin-Smith is a mediocre player, pick 11 (as it will probably turn out to be) is a mediocre pick. Cockatoo is a starting point. Let's face it, aside from Guthrie, the rest of your youth looks fairly run of the mill. You might be able to polish up a turd like Josh Walker and sell it for Lachie Henderson, but unlike Carlton, the Crows are acutely aware of Dangerfields value to their club. And it ain't just on field.
Our youth pushed out a certain Taylor Hunt, now best-22 for you. Caddy, Thurlow, Lang, Cockatoo, Gregson Kolodjashnij..

I suggested simply 2 picks after Adelaide's first, so 14 and 15.

That provides additional compensation, high enough for the Crows to get real benefit, but not too high as to upset other clubs (e.g. giving them Pick 1 or 2).

My personal belief is that something like this is/has been discussed behind closed doors.
Pretty sure hawthorn will be upset, oh and imagine Eddie McGuire he'd be on a campaign for months

Can't see this happening

Luv all the talk of Cats sending trading players back to AFC as part of PD trade.

The same reason the Pd to Demons thing didn't happen. Player didn't want to go there. Same here. Recently re-contracted players are then gonna want to go to AFC.

If it gets to trade, the offer wont be a god father deal. Rd 1 and Rd 2 next year. Its better than the AFL compo offer.

Of course, then GFC drag out their trading negotiations to kill all the time and SC options that AFC have in trade period. Take what you can get early or wait until to end of trade period, maybe get a bit more and have no time to use them…..

That's a much better response - admittedly forgot about Thurlow who looks like a good prospect. I reckon Caddy could be part of a palatable trade, if players like Cockatoo and Duncan mean too much to the club. Opinion only is that Caddy goes missing on occcasion. Duncan is in your top 3 players (opinion again.)

I'm not asking why Adelaide haven't announced it. I'm asking why Dangerfield hasn't.
The only party to publicly comment so far is Adelaide.

Dangerfield is with the Crows players at their end of season gathering right now and has told the media he will make a comment later today.

I reckon the rest of the clubs would be up in arms about the Crows getting 2 compensation picks, especially after Hawthorn only got 1 for Franklin. Bear in mind that every compensation pick handed out pushes everybody else's picks down another spot. So even 14 and 15 for the Crows would probably be 16 and 17 by the time Brisbane and Carlton get their compensation picks, and everybody else's picks after that are correspondingly lower.

And that's the big flaw in the free agency compensation system. Players' value should be in absolute terms, i.e. "this player is worth pick 1 or pick 5 or 10 or 20" or whatever, not "this guy is worth a pick after your first round pick". That produces farcical results like Hawthorn getting 19 for Franklin while Melbourne get 3 for Frawley. Or the potential this year for the Crows to get 16 (after other compensation picks are handed out) for Dangerfield while Carlton get 2 for Kruezer.

The end result being it ends up being very much in the Crows' best interests to match the FA offer and extract fair compensation from Geelong since they're sure as hell not going to get it from the AFL.
I completely agree with your notion about free agency compensation being a ridiculous system. But you lost me with your idea about a players value being in absolute terms. Who decides this value? What is considered when doing this? How do you meaningfully compare one player to another? This system would be just as ludicrous and arbitrary as the current one.
Only fair system is no compensation at all

I can't fault a guy who has bled for the club for this many years; including being a sole contributor in a lot of games, and is now in a difficult position with a partner wanting to go home, making this decision. Smart business move for his post-football life. Geelong and to a further extent Melbourne will look after him very well. Its not an ideal world for me, but it is the world we live in, so being pragmatic about it softens the blow.

My football heart wishes the likes of Judd, Ablett, Franklin etc ... and now Dangerfield stayed with their clubs, but the brain says to turn down offers that better set you up for life after football would be foolish.

There can be only one...
Why hasn't he confirmed he's going to Geelong if the media are so certain with their reporting of it? He's allowed to say that's where he wants to go. He's just not allowed to sign a contract yet.
Because Dangerfield hasn't fielded them with an offer yet. Dangerfield can only put one free agency bid to the Crows and they have the option to match it. He can't take one bid after another, so he only gets one crack. I am assuming Danger and his manager are weighing up the pros and cons with taking the Geelong bid to the Crows vs what other clubs might offer.

There is a high probability the crows will match $800k, if Geelong isn't prepared to trade market value for him then Danger may end up at a club he may not want to be at, if he goes into the draft he may end up interstate, further away form home than he is now so it is not without risk.
