McCarthy already had a contract on the table with another club before he was snapped up. Same with Nick Stevens.

Geelong will have to play ball. No such thing as a free lunch.
he trained with richmond and there was interest, and no delisted rookie is going to tell clubs no, they are desperate for any opportunity they can get and will be happy to land wherever, this is not a relevant example to dangerfield. its one thing having a preffered club, its another thing saying no i dont want to play for you to others

The clubs will be all over this and we'd know if you intend to match, so we'd both be mad not to take advantage of the AFL's compo.
The AFL's compensation for losing a player to Free Agency is pretty miserable. AFC would get a far better outcome if they matched Geelong's offer and Geelong had to trade. The AFC have already stated that they will follow the course of action that yields the best outcome for the AFC.

Quoting Adelaide CEO Andrew Fagan

"Whilst disappointing, we understand that Patrick's decision has been made for personal reasons," Fagan said.

"We will now consider our options, however, our members and supporters should rest assured that in doing so we will make decisions and take action that is in the best interests of our football club.”

What could be clearer?

What a salty post hahahaha!

It reeks of finding any excuse to put Geelong down and since the Crows are infinitely inferior to Geelong, you have resorted to jumping on another team's bandwagon.
but but buttt adelaide is so angry because dangerfield is being such a big meanie and a horrible person for wanting to leave, adelaide has done him a favour no other club would have by drafting him, he owes adelaide so much for being their best player, he isnt being fair leaving because they havent been good enough during his 8 years to win a premiership, he owes them for drafting him and gifting him games, such a traitor because adelaide have been so nice to him. ( summarising the adelaide board posts since the announcement)

If Danger names a club and categorically states it is the only club he will sign with other clubs offering a contract - should the Crows match and he decide to go to the draft - would be wasting their time. And you risk getting zilch.
That's the scenario when trading all players out of contract.

And yet great players almost always are traded for a high price.

people seem to forget that nobody has gotten fair market value for a superstar, look at the judd trade, at the time judd was the clear no1 player in the AFL, he was the garry ablett and bigger than natt fye, yet carlton wouldnt budge on pick 1, giving them pick 3 and josh kennedy, who remember at the time had not achieved anything during his time at carlton and was not considered a great catch. it is only since kennedy has achieved something that everyone talks it up. at the time it was not considered fair value

Plus two first rounders? I doubt it. He's 26 next year so he's got maybe four years left at his peak, and Geelong don't look like threatening any time soon. 800K plus draft picks seems way overs for a club in Geelong's position.
Was talking purely from a salary point of view. Doubt, even with a trade, Geelong will pay two first rounders. Pick 9 this year, plus a second rounder or player will be the deal, otherwise as you say, the Cats would walk away.

Even players still contracted as we've found to our discomfort. All I was suggesting is that if the Crows push too hard they risk getting zilch. That said, I'm confident a deal will be done before it gets to that.

People have obviously forgotten about the Nick Stevens imbroglio, Port got nothing but made an example and went on to win a flag, Collingwood missed out on their man because they were behaving like dicks at the trade table and Stevens ended up at Carlton. Winners all round?

The WC deal was 3, 20 and Kennedy, not 3 and Kennedy.

Carlton didn't want to let Kennedy go as he was highly rated and was developing nicely. Young talls don't dominate at 19. They had to give up something good to get Judd though and paid the price - just as Geelong will.

West Coast rated Kennedy as much as Carlton did.

Dangerfield is one of the stars of the comp, who are you trying to kid.

Of course they do, that's what I said, they wait till the end of the season, regardless of whether they have wanted to be at the club during the season or not.
lol and he didnt say this at the end of 2014, which is what he would have done if he didnt want to be there this season, he wasnt at a club he didnt want to play for in 2015, he has planned his leave for 2016 season.

No, we missed out because they wanted Alan Didak and we correctly said that wasn't a worthwhile trade. Time proved us right.

I already explained this before, GC, he's a free agent at the end of this year so it makes sense for him to wait if he wants to choose where he wants to go. Read back if you've forgotten.

No he wasn't.

He nominated Carlton after they offered a massive paper bag deal at Visy.

I believe that Richmond offered better picks than Carlton and he said no.
Yeah we thought we were getting stabbed in the back when he only nominated one club.

Left a bad taste in the mouth until we knew better.

he is not on the level judd was seen as, judd was rated the clear no1 in the comp by a mile at the time, a level dangerfield isnt on.

and no kenedy wasnt rated a future superstar at the time, he was a developing forward, but he was often critiqued and seen to have serious flaws especially in his marking
