Player Watch Patrick Lipinski

I have never understood the long running criticism of Lipinski. He was recruited to be an outside runner with excellent disposal. He is exactly that. He does all the other AFL level player things to a lower level, because there are very few players who excel at everything. As I have said before, there are no weak players getting regular games at AFL level. It is just too tough for that. You need the elite kicks on their feet with a little time to look, not grovelling in the packs and on their knees all the time.

Lipinski has been good this year, but let’s not rewrite history, his ball use has been very poor in some patches of 2024

no one expects him to be Maynard but when his turn to go he doesn't. that's always the criticism of him.
Exactly my point. Pity most posters on here seem to target the poster rather than just acknowledge that others here are entitled to have their say also. Or should I canvas the popular views here before posting so that nobody gets their nose out of joint because my opinion may be different?

If you disagree with me re: Lipinski.... watch the match replay and pause when the ball is contested and in between him and an opponent. He stands there and watches and lets the opposition win the ball. If some of you don't want to acknowledge this major weakness in his game, so be it - that's not my problem.

AFL is a physical game and YES it is a problem when a 190cm bloke refuses to engage physically. It's NOT netball and there are times you HAVE TO GO, when it is your turn, else you let your teammates down.

What a joke.
You made a stupid post about him being soft and have been called out on it.

Every player has strengths and weaknesses. Lippas ability to cover ground outweighs the odd time he might not attack the ball like Clive Palmer attacking a buffet

I don't agree. He doesn't hurt enough offensively to be squibbing contests when its his turn to go.

And if the coaches thought this he'd be in the VFL id wager. Most of what these blokes do we dont see on the telecast
He was at Footscray. I know he runs all day and I know he uses it well. However that doesn't prevent me from noticing his unwillingness to absorb/inflict physical contact.

All players must have identical attributes, and play the exact same way. They must not have certain strengths and play/be used accordingly!

I've been higly critical of his lack of pace is the past, but the timing of the current criticism is odd considering the year he's had thus far.

Seriously.... you people are over the top.... I feel like I have to justify every opinion to the backstreet boys who just agree with one another. :P

Most of the "soft" stuff is because he plays wide and gets in one on ones where he's in good position but he's slow and his opponents turn on the jets and get ahead and beat him to the ball. But he makes up for it by running all day - further than any of his teammates. This clogs up outlets forcing the opposition to kick it down the line to our good contested players and also gets himself out in space a lot to receive and uses it beautifully.

He does the most KMs for us every single game and runs back the hardest defensively as well as forward offensively all game.

He’s leading the team for score involvements and sits 23rd in the league. That suggests otherwise. He plays to his strengths. No player is perfect
And to balance this argument can you tell me how many times the opposition score after he pulls out of a contest?

And at Collingwood he’s a premiership player who is having a decent year.
As has been pointed out to you, on multiple occasions, his job is to play on the outside as a link man.

He’s doing that job. If he wasn’t, he’d be in the VFL.

Stop getting offended by your own inability to see reason.

I reckon Lippa has ran past him topless too so i understand the emasculation

How about you go through the Kayo replay and give us the time stamps.

Lippa isn’t a crash and bash type. He thinks his way through contested situation. Sometime it’s better to let the opposition get the ball and wrap them up rather than go for the ball lose it and get taken out of the contest.

You said he’s not good offensively to make up for his lack of contest. I just proved he was and this is your counter?

It’s fine to say he’s not a contested player. I agree he’s not.

But he’s a valuable cog that runs all day and is generally a good ball user going inside 50.

He’s not going to improve his contested footy. That’s not his game.

Every team has a number of different types of player. Lipinski is defintely an outside mid and you need those. His disposal, especially by hand, is elite and he is a link player. Not everyone needs to be the in-and-under, hard nut type.
He is clearly playing a role and he is actually quite good at it. He doesn't need to be compared to the Maynards and Mitchells of the team.

Yeah this is not what people are expecting and I reckon you know that.

Daisy Thomas in 2010 and 2011 showed that scrawny outside types can go as hard as the next bloke if committed on thr occasions its needed. No one asked him to be Luke Ball.

Isaac Smith got the balance right.

Bruce the same.

Just because you are an outside player doesn't mean that there aren't moments where you are required to crack in.
