It's a given that Patrick is boorish pig of unspeakable arrogance, but his comment on SEN smacks of sheer stupidity.

This will be a close game with Geelong being a good outside chance.
How can this fool write us off so quickly?

Put that with all the clowns who were tipping Melbourne easliy on Sat. (Garry Lyon) At the end of the day what Patrick Smith says or thinks will have no bearing on how Geelong play. Its just an opinion. Care factor. BTW how many games has he played?

Hope he writes an article about it. Just like Robert Walls on the front cover of The Age sport Saturday morning :D

I'm not expecting a 9 goal quarter this time around....
Yes, I would hope that half the team being out and the other half having the flu had something to do with that.

His comments in The Australian this morning (see below) indicate that this opinion is based not so much on Geelong but on how poor Melbourne was.

Patrick Smith said:
If the race for the flag was murky before the weekend it is now almost sparkling clear. Where St Kilda was breathtaking, West Coast was adequate only. Not much can be taken from Geelong's win because Melbourne was just skin and bones. There was no passion for it is a finite quality spent in the three wins required to claw Melbourne's way back into the finals.

Next year will be Neale Daniher's eighth at the MCG. Five of those years have seen September action, including the 2000 grand final. But he desperately needs an infusion of quality players. Too many of the Demons are honest but ordinary. It is hard to tell one player from the other, as each is as limited as the others.

It'll be a very close game. Friday night would have taken a lot out of us physically, plus the flight back from Perth has often been a poisoned chalice.

Disregard the H&A game earlier this year, you guys were totally depleted and you'll have a completely different forward line.

What do you think the matchups will be like? Here's my take on it:
Kirk - Ling
Ablett - Corey
JBolton - Bartel
Crouch - GAblett
Williams - Kelly
Goodes - Mooney
Mathews - Riccardi

Hall - Scarlett
O'Loughlin - Harley
O'Keefe - Egan
Davis - Milburn
Schneider - Hunt
Buchanan - Tenace

Barry - Kingsley
CBolton - NAblett
LRT - Playfair
Dempster - Gardiner
Kennelly - Johnson

Fairly similar to what I'd predict, but I'd expect Rooke to do a tagging job on Williams. Who would you rate as your most damaging midfielder?

Also, I don't think Tenace will be playing in defence, Sando will probably take a small forward, probably Davis and Milburn might get someone else. There's a few possible matchups down there, probably depends on whether Goodes plays up forward for you guys.

Aah, forgot about Sanderson, he was another one who missing at the last meeting. Williams is probably the most 'damaging', depends on what you mean by that word, but Kirk also finds a lot of the ball. Goodes has been playing predominantly on the wing, with occasional forays in the forward line.

Some "journalist" thinks we'll get smashed? Meh.

What odds Patrick Smith gets blackbanned by the club for daring to criticise us.

I figured it would be Williams, don't get to see the Swans much over here and wanted another opinion. By damaging I mean someone who doesn't waste much of their disposals, Williams is fast, skillful and tough which is why I considered him the most damaging midfielder and possibly player on Sydney's list. Is there any word on his ankle (?) injury?

A Ling vs Kirk matchup would be a spectacle, 2 of the best 2 way players in the game. Both will be looking to subdue the other while getting plenty of the pill themselves.

It could look good on Cooks resume if he ever tries to land Demetriou's job in the future. ;)

Interesting take on it.

I know we shouldn't need any more motivation, it being a final and all, but I think we should make a huge deal about his comments (if they were directly saying we will get smashed). It will fire the boys up yet again.

If they need Patrick Smith's comments to fire them up for a semi-final there is something wrong.

In general though, i just don't understand why the club are so precious.
We copped a bit of criticism a few weeks ago and how did we handle it? We had a big sook and petulantly stopped the media from having access to our singing of the song.
What does that achieve? All it does is deny our supporters the chance to enjoy the song and make the football world think we're a bit soft.

Every club cops criticism at different times, it's the way of the media. Most take it in their stride and move on, but we seem to get hung up on it.

It could be if Bomber is trying to make a Us vs Them type thing. Especially with N.Ablett playing, it could help him to know they wont give in to the media. Could be taken as tough or soft depending how you look at it I guess.
Just a theory anyway.

Probably, but these issues have been around for years.

Mr. 90% couldn't handle the club being criticised and currently Mr. Davidson is extremely paranoid about criticism, to the point where he gets abusive when questioned about the club by the members.

From my dealings with some influential club employees i get the real impression that there is a massive victims mentality ingrained within the club.

Anyway, apologies to the thread starter for going off on a tangent.

Nothing can be taken from Geelong's win because Melbourne were insipid. Balls. Absolute balls. So what if Sydney go down by 56 points? Not much can be taken from that. So what if the Saints get streamrolled by 49? Well, Port were superb in beating Adelaide by 98, but you can't read much into Geelong's form. So what if Geelong crush Port by 8 goals and win the flag?

Sunday's headline: "Cats break flag drought, but you can't take much from it."

I wanna know what Walls thinks about this game V Sydney and the game we just won.
Did you see him on 'On the Couch' last night?

Noddy tipped Sydney and asked Walls who he was tipping.

Walls: 'Mike I'm going with Geelong'
Noddy: 'Really??'
Walls: 'No, I'm only joking! (laughs out loud)'

I couldn't care less, but Walls really hates our guts :D

Walls is an overrated failure and Patrick Smith is a pseudo intellectual moron.

Their opinions are worthless. Lets face it Walls was a failure as a coach and Smith is the head football writer at a paper that wouldn't know football if it bit it on the @#$&. Losers.

The sad fact is the standard of football jounalism (tv and print) in this country is generally pretty poor. How Sheahan, Smith and Walls command so much attention is beyond me. I refuse to listen, read or watch any of them.

hehe, who was coaching Brisbane when we got the highest score???

I haven't had foxtel this year, but I did notice last year he definitely had something against Geelong. It really stood out to me big time with Walls and Geelong - not surprised to see he hasn't changed this year. I do miss Healy's comments though, he seems the only talkshow person with a brain.
