Wearden, meanwhile, is still in the very early stages of his development after making a monumental leap from country football in Victoria to the AFL.

The Club has been thrilled with his progress over recent weeks and firmly believes the “penny has dropped” in terms of his understanding of what’s required in transitioning to the elite level.

Wearden's stocks are rising

When Patrick Wearden’s name was read out with the Brisbane Lions’ final selection at last year’s AFL National Draft, most fans were forced to jump on Google to find out more about the relatively unknown Kyabram teenager.

Wearden wasn’t selected to play in the 2011 National U18 Championships - a regular breeding ground for future AFL talent - yet still caught the eye of the Club’s recruiting staff while playing with the Murray Bushrangers.

At the time he was drafted, National Talent Manager Rob Kerr explained that while Wearden’s development probably wasn’t as advanced as his fellow draftees, he had untapped potential.

Fast forward eight months and the 18 year-old has made some serious inroads in terms of his strength and conditioning.

Hadn't seen him play until today, must say I didn't notice him at all.

For the record, was quite impressive across half back against the Suns. Quite a few strong marks and good rebound.

Good to hear. He still has a slender build. Big off season in the gym should help him quite a bit.
Apparently that is something that he will be concentrating on. I took a while to notice him yesterday as well. He popped up every now and again, though. He didn't shine, but he also didn't make too many mistakes from what I saw.

In previous games I've seen he'd faded into the background. The Suns game was the first time he'd 'popped' for me. I'd be surprised to see him get a senior game this year, but that was the first whiff I'd had that there might be something there.

Patrick Wearden, a lean 191cm forward/midfielder from Kyabram via the Murray Bushrangers, was nominated at pick 47 by the Lions in the 2011 National Draft.

After a solid pre-season Wearden was given a brief taste of senior footy, playing the second half of the Lions' second round NAB Cup match against Adelaide in Alice Springs. He did 'a couple of nice things', but overall struggled to make an impact in a soundly beaten side.

Patrick immediately went back to the reserves, spending time up forward and on the wing during the remaining practice matches and into the early rounds of the season proper, before finding a more permanent home on the half back line.

Across the first couple of months of the season, he was tending to flash in and out of play; a strong 10 minutes here and 15 minutes there would be punctuated by the odd quiet quarter or two. In his defence, though, the Lions were so utterly dominant in a number of these games, the backmen were hardly able to get a look at the leather at all!

A mid-season review in which "the penny dropped," according to reserves coach Nathan Clarke, led to Patrick stringing together a number of consistent, high quality performances, playing mainly as the 'third tall' defender. A 29 disposal game in a top-of-the-table clash against Southport plus two dominant matches against the Gold Coast Suns being the pick of the crop.

Wearden suffered a minor quadricep injury which kept him out of the final home and away match, but he returned for the finals, playing a key role in the Qualifying Final win over Southport and backing that up with rock solid games in both the Semi and Grand Finals against NT Thunder.

Overall Patrick Wearden had an encouraging first year on the list, with his form-line trending handsomely upwards. He is safe-marking, long-kicking, mostly cool-headed and a strong runner; attributes the Lions will want to develop further and reap the benefits of for hopefully many years to come.

A couple of questions for thsoe who have watched Weardon play.

Do you think he will play seniors next year?

Can you see him being a decent AFl player?

If he plays seniors, it will most likely be towards the end of the season. Expect to see him feature in the NAB Cup though.

He has potential to become a good player at AFL level. I have high hopes for him.

in hindsight with the amount of development he still needs would he have been a prospect more suited to the rookie draft which we claimed early so that he wouldn't go to another club?

Also just wondering is the general consensus on his position to be back flanker or third tall? could he fill out to be a kpd

More of an athletic flanker at this stage IMO. Probably won't fill out to become a KPP.

He's only 190-191 as well isn't he? Seems like wing depth, but if he is an accumulator we are still looking for a spiritual successor to Nige (or at least I am anyway).

Wearden still weighting
January 3, 2013
Sam Lord

Patrick Wearden officially landed at the Brisbane Lions a touch over 12 months ago, knowing that he needed to add considerable bulk to his slight frame in order to compete at senior AFL level.

He now approaches his second full pre-season with not only valuable experience, but also an additional 8kg of muscle to show for his efforts.

“I’ve still got a way to go,” he said.

“I obviously need to put on a bit more weight. I put on about 8kg last pre-season, and if I can do that again this year it would be really good. That will go a long way to hopefully getting some games next year.”

Based on his stats he struggles to find the footy. Did he have the same problem in the ressies in 2013.

Left the field in a bad way against the Suns Reserves on Sunday afternoon.

Was cleaned up after disposing of the footy from what I can tell (didn't see the hit as was watching the footy flying at the time).

However he left the field with his jaw being held gingerly by the Doc and slumped over the shoulders of support staff.

Hope he's ok.

Reserves wrap - Round 4

The win was soured by an incident which resulted in promising utility Patrick Wearden suffering a badly broken jaw.

“He copped one a little bit high,” Harding said.

“The guy (who hit Wearden) got a few weeks (at the Tribunal), but it looks like Patty will be out for some time with the injury.”

“It’s a real shame because he’s been going really well.”

Patrick Wearden, meanwhile, was brutally felled by a Gold Coast opponent during Sunday’s NEAFL clash at Metricon Stadium.

“Unfortunately Patty got a nasty one – a fist to the face basically in a marking contest,” Burton said.

“He’s unfortunately broken his jaw in three places.”

“He got operated on down on the Gold Coast (on Sunday night). Our Welfare Manager (Manny Lynch) was down there looking after him, but he’ll come back to Brisbane today to start the recovery process.”

Although Wearden’s exact time on the sidelines is yet to be determined, he is expected to miss a significant period.
