As pure defenders i think at the moment they are pretty equal and in the future i think they will still be very equal.

But Ryder has too much going for him. Hes tall and athletic and hes just built to be a superstar. so i think carlton people are very happy with bower but its only a matter of time before ryder becomes elite

I have not seen enough of Bower too comment. But many, many people underrate Ryders defensive skills based on a couple of poor games. Ryder as a 20 year old was our number one defender this year and played on all the big names. There would not many defenders this year that was put under as much pressure as him. As demonstrated by the fact that he was top 5 in spoils in the AFL.

After missing 8 weeks with a collar bone he shut down (as well as anyone this year) Buddy.
.

Buddy kicked 4.5, 9 shots on goals, that was above his average in 2008. And he didn't look too interested after he got his ton, except when Fev looked like he might've snatched the Coleman in the 2nd half. So no.

The result of this poll is justified. Bower at Carlton is similar to what Morris was a the Dogs. All the Dogs supporters rated him, but no-one else in the AFL did. Then this year after endless bulldogs cries people finally figured out what a gun defender he is. I would be my house that everyone of those that have said "idk who Bower is" would've said the same thing about Morris last year.

I'll give you an example how Bower is underrated... in the Perth media when the whole Warnock trade was taking place it was reported that Carlton were offering pick 24 and Bower as a sweetner.

Ryder is a good player and I have no doubt he'll be a 200+ player, but as several Carlton posters have said, I would not trade Bower for Ryder... Very very happy with Bower

I'm guessing you knew quite well how many times the ball got delivered to Buddy. And I know every Hawthorn supporter thought Bower's job on Buddy was one of the best all year purely due to the amount and "quality" of supplies. The amount of clean spoils that Bower won would rival the most in a game all year.

Thats not saying much in Bower's favour if it was reported that he was being shopped around for a middle tier player like Warnock.

But he wasn't being shopped around (just as he wasn't in the Judd trade), that is not the point the poster is making. The Perth media obviously determined that sweetening the trade with Bower would definitely get the Warnock deal done. The club had no intention of shopping him around for Judd or Warnock because the club & in particular the coaching staff, are fully aware of his talent, hence why he played on quality forwards like Franklin, Bradshaw & Travis Cloke, among others, this season.

Both achieved just as much as each other TBH.

Bower will be a gun. Don't watch enough of Ryder. Fromn what i've seen, he can take a mark. Defensive skills so so. But i've watched him under 10 times.

Even though I reckon Ryder is overrated, I would much rather him at Richmond than Bower, who would struggle to get in our best 22 at the moment.

Why would you want to make yourself look like a fool?

Obviously didn't watch him much in 2008. If he improves as much as he did then again in 2009, he'd stich up the best and fairest easily.

Bower has one of the best spoiling techniques you will ever see, and has the balls to take on his opponents and run the ball out of the defensive 50. ATM he is a 3rd tall, but will eventually take CHB (earned AA there u/18s).

He's actually a very similar type player to Matthew Scarlett, but with better closing speed.

I expect big things.

exactly which is why ryder is ahead. ryder has been taking the number 1 forward all year, bower is probably at the stage that ryder was at the end of 2007.

I expect ryder to really take it up a level next year and get some good stats which will make opposition supporters realise how good he is. with a defensive side of the game plan actually implemented in our side he will reap the benefits and show better stats as time goes on

3rd tall as he has been injured, i forgot to add. I think end of 2009 he will be the dedicated CHB, with Waite going to the HF line or playing a loose quarterback role in the HBF.

He has already been matched up against Buddy and Cloke etc. He can already play CHB.

Are you ****en serious why is this even a thread somebody is taking the piss big time.
Paddy will be a star who already has glimpses of whats to come as for Bower pfft oh come on please can somebody stop the humour ha ha
