Re: 18. Paul Bower - GYNO

he has arguably the most uncomplementary tattoo in the afl

i raised a point that his tattoo is one that suits someone of maori, tribal origins

yet the young man is a caucasian

Mike and Dan’s Play of the Week: Paul Bower

What impact has your recent re-signing with the club for 2 years made? How much of a difference does it make knowing that you’ll have the same day job for the next couple of years?

I love the club and want to play for the club for the rest of my career. It was exciting to re-sign and know that I will be with the boys for another 2 years and to hopefully play in a successful side.

KPPs are like seeds to start off with, they need to be loved, nurtured and cared for over time and eventually they will flourish and turn into a beautiful flower...like Paul Bower has...and like he will at CHB, especially next year...that will be his year.:)

Definitely bulked up a bit because he's relaxed and not flexing his muscles like he is in the above photo.

Look at all those shoes.

Great to see Carlton getting so involved in that side of the game and finding the right shoes for the players.

Richmond might send their players down to the nearest Athlete's foot store. :p :D

AFL Footy is a pretty ruthless and cut throat business after watching that video.

We were trying to find another club for Chris Johnson, yet he appears to be on good terms with his teammates and coaches in that video.

It's a glamorous life style like Jamison noted in the link I posted in his Buddy thread. ;)

Who needs Talia when you have Austin and Bower.:)
With these 2 getting a full pre-season in the gym (or 2 with Austin) Carlton fans should look for an Austin Bower combination in the key defensive posts for many years to come.
Yeah Baby Yeah.:D

He's bulked up heaps! I'm so happy! Just the other day I was thinking of starting a thread titled "your pre-season wish", and mine was for Bower to put on some muscle. This guys easily my favourite player, i've rated him since day 1, and I have no doubt that once he puts on some muscle he'll be a quality key position defender. I've been telling people for ages that this guy is our future CHB, and after looking at him in that video, I think his time has arrived. I'm so happy, his path to All Australian has begun.

Ok so i'm Bower's 'buddy' for the 2010 season. Unfortunately since my above post it looks like Bower has slimmed down a bit, which is common for AFL players to start slimming down closer to round 1. Bit disappointed seeing as I really believe Bower can be a key defender but hopefully he'll be able to hold his own in the 1 on 1 battles this year. Would also like to see Jammo bulk up a bit more, will be interesting to see how we cope with the big strong opposition forwards this year.

Anyways, regardless of Bower's size, I'm his biggest fan and am very confident that just like he did in '09, he'll continue to win over and convince the Carlton faithful the more he plays. He has great versality being able to play big or small, and has the athletic characteristics that you love to have in an AFL player. Predicting a strong 2010 for him.

Yeh so Bower was pretty much amazing against the Swans in rnd 1 of the Nab Cup game. I was at the game and watched him more than anybody considering he's my favourite player and I thought he was pretty much flawless. The highlight of the night for me was the fact that Bower seemed to win the contested contests time and time again. Was a sign that he's improved his physicality and is hopefully a bit stronger this year. I really do think he'll establish himself as a star this year, and opposition supporters will finally start to realise it.

If nothing else I should be able to comfortably clear the very low bar set by Paul's last buddy...a total of zero updates for season 2010.

Im gonna be honest...I don't get too as many games as I would like, and I don't get to training at all. I occasionally read the sports section of the HUN though, and as such feel that I am every bit as qualified to comment on anything football related as a paid journalist.

My in-depth review of the progress to date is -

2009 - Promising
2010 - Write off
2011 - ???

Early 09 form was cracking including a five game mid season run where he averaged 25 touches, 8 marks, and went toe to toe with some handy CHF goal kicking types. Smoky AA kind of form. Got a case of dicky knee after that and wasn't the same player afterwards. Don't know if he has the heart the size of Kingston Town and will carry an injury until he gets carried off, or if in fact he is the type of player that needs to be full fitness to be in form and little niggles bring him undone. Suspecting the former. Bower is hard. Not in the way Hampson has been hard for the last three weeks straight. Genuine hard. Carved from Maori greenstone and mineralised by the desert sands of the west hard. And he has a tattoo.

2010 started in a blaze of glory with a memorable game against Richmond, but that's where the good news ends. Quad injuries are real ****ers. It was a quad injury that put paid to my promising career, when at the age of 29 I had finally set myself for a crack at the big time. T'was the games loss.

I won't pretend to know what happens behind the scenes in a physio sense (believe that role is taken), but pretty plain to see that after the early season quad strain and mid season recurrence (might have been the other quad from memory as can often be the case) Paul was NQR. In my reckonin he should have been put in cotton wool, and Thornton's VFL form should have rightly seen him get a gig in the latter parts of the year.

Anyway, lessons learned a new season dawns and all of that. Don't think it overstates the matter to say that Paul is the most important man in our 2011 campagn...disagree, I dare ya.

Many have him pegged as a tall attacking flanker, and its a fair opinion too, but its not mine. I still think he is our best option at CHB. He cut his teeth at CHB, he is crazy strong, and easy to forget still only 22 (23 in a week). What he needs...what our entire backline needs...is some continuity. A reasonable run with injury, some quality ball users around him, and the type of understanding that can only come from a defensive unit playing shitloads of games together. The injection of guys like Laidler and Duigan, an fingers crossed start to the pre-season for Austin, and Jamo looking like the defender of Castle Grayskull leads me to be cautiously optimistic that this may be a realistic outcome for 2011.

Anyway I think I've managed to pull this off without making anything in the way of football related insight, or venturing any opinion that could bring me undone at a later stage in the season, so this seems a good juncture at which to make camp for couple of weeks.

All the best for 2011 Paul.

Bloody hell...one week on and we've already fallen off the first page! Some very keen buddies out there.

Any Melbournites who get along to training want to comment on how the 'mu is looking at training??? Kinda like a deputy buddy.
