In the millionth thread i've started about Paul Dimattina, this one is by far the one i've been dreading.

He retired today.

Wish Dimma all the best. He gave us great service, but the writing was on the wall this year. We really missed him and Southern in the '97 Prelim when they were suspended.
 
I thought this year was one of his best. Skills were still pretty ordinary but he was used well as an impact player rotating with Hahn off the bench. He was hard at the ball all year, something very few others managed to be.
 
This is so sad. :(

But every cloud has a silver lining:

"Life after football for Paul and his family will involve the expansion of the successful Dimattina restaurant empire. In the short term, Paul and his family will be moving to Queensland to over-see the latest Dimattina acquisition."

I'll go along and give him everyone's regards. :)

(He might move into my street, there is a nice house for sale...)
 
I hate seeing guys like Dimma go and I wish he'd retired before Round 22 so he could have been given a real sendoff with Kretta (even though he was injured). A great clubman and by all accounts a decent bloke. At least he got to go out as a regular player. As much as I hate to say it, guys like Boyd, Birss, and Cross were always going to get a game ahead of him next year and he probably would have spent most of his time in the Bees.

Best of luck to Dimma and thank God he made it to 100 games in case his son turns out to be a gun.

This will save a spot on the list for one of them. We only need one more delisting by my calculations. Can't be Garlick because of his contract (and he probably had at least as good a season as Harro and much better than the other two). Wiggins may win out through youth and the fact he was played late in the season may mean he's still seen as a long termer.
 
Congratulations Dimma on a great career with the Dogs.

You will be remembered as a class act on and off the field - a role model for your younger teammates.

Yes, showed the way with his aggression at the ball this year.

Can be very proud of his achievements and will be remembered fondly as part of the Doggies' Wog Squad. Ahh, those were the days.

I'm sad to hear the news. Once again he has put the club first and foremost.

The last of the infamous wog squad! I have many fond memories of their shenanigans
 
Why, oh why did I have to read this thread just as I was ready to go to sleep? :(

I share your pain, PC. I will always remember that evening at Dimma's before I left.

I'm looking at his badge on my scarf as I type this and see the smiling face.

What a magnificent and hard working contributor he was for us.

Pass on my best wishes to him when you next visit Dimma's. I can still taste the garlic!

Good on you Dimma you were an old fashioned player, head over the ball and loved the club. Your passion will be missed.

I dont see the sense in getting rid of a seasoned midfield warrior. His skill set is what we need more than his poor disposal hurts us. If westy goes down with an injury we will be left with a midfield of light weights, except for hahn, who still has a lot to learn about how to get the ball.

Id be angry too, keeping eagleton, harison and basset ahead of dimma.
 
Thats it stefoid, I am suprised that they wouldn't give Dimma every opportunity. He is a loyal servant of the club and his endeavour is amazing, he is a leader through his actions and the way he goes about his footy. Whats most is he is a real Bulldog, he's seen the tough times and the good times, has always given his all for the jumper.

I think he may have been more value in 2004 than what the coaching staff have suggested.

At least one, maybe two of these players have to be delisted alongside Dimma. If not, it would mean that Dimma would pretty much be the scapegoat for what was undoubtedly a poor season by the team. If the match committee are serious about the future, then the youngsters and the newly brought in (traded) players will be given every opportunity ahead of the above.
