Paul Johnson Discussion

Good assesment Doc

Think the upcoming season is his last

Currently i would predict Melbourne to be looking for a young tall in their later draft picks as our ruck stocks are not very deep

Perhaps Mumford from The Cats could be an option but he is as raw as Spencer

There is nobody in the draft that is a ready made ruckman or better than what we already have

Jolly is really the only one on the trade table for Victorian club so if someone wants a ruckman you may as well get a good one
And you expect a quality ruckman with a late draft pick? Not in this draft.

It'll be interesting to see whether we upgrade Spencer onto the main list. IMO it would be a massive mistake. And Mumford's a far more talented ruckman than Spencer, and Geelong aint letting him go.

The best way for us to acquire another ruckman is via a trade. Maybe Griffin from Adelaide. If we don't, I'd keep Johnson on our books.

What's the go with Thorp? Pick 6 in the (alleged) SuperDraft, hasn't done much but as a young tall I wouldn't have thought that Hawthorn would give him away for rubbish such as Paul Johnson...

I've heard that he has serious tickets on himself and quite injury prone. Maybe thats the issue!

I actually think the best way for any club to snare a ruckman would be through a WAFL/SANFL/VFL mature aged (21-23) player. At the moment, clubs are locking away their ruckmen into contracts so they can see through the Gold Coast and WS draft era.

And, Neil Craig has said Griffin isn't going anywhere.

Well...To be honest i would take him

We're down to 2 ruckmen, I think our next viable option is taking roughead to ruck,

Renouf will be alright, hes struggling now, but he's still developing

Taylor...well yeah

Paul Johnson would be an alright fit, no illusions that he will dominate, but purely as a back-up

If we didnt land Seaby/Jolly, i would throw a goodwill pick to melbourne, maybe give them Morton for Johnson, Both on the outer at their clubs, with a new club both would probably get games and have a chance to try to break into a team and earn a spot

Johnston would be a good pick up for the Hawks.

He is a better player that Taylor and could assist renouf.

SO aside form the scapegoating going on here by demons fans, which is pretty normal, the reality is PJ is another one of these 25-26 year old ruckmen who looks like he's headed for anonymity. The reality is he's had a lot of footy taken away from him by injury, and like pretty much all good ruckmen (except for the VERY best) he will come into his prime over the next 5-7 years.

He's a sensational trade prospect because he doesn't it into the usual stereoypes you get on here. He's not too good to be released, and he's not too crap to realistically be hunted. Add to that that he may have worn out his welcome.

Jamar probably has slightly more trade value, but has just come off his best year and is the best in the ruck contests. Meesen showed something, so will be persevered with, but doesn't have much trade value. Martin is a fill-in, and Spencer is VERY young.

PJ is the most appropriate for trade, especially to a club that has a marquee starting ruckman. He's not a great tap ruckman (thogh he gets his share), and as such will never be a #1 ruckman. But he's great at picking up touches, and around teh ground is an asset.

Discerning recruiters who are looking at a window (or are in one) will look at him seriously for late second rounders, but probably would only get a third rounder.

Someone just needs to get into his ear and tell him that he isn't a midfielder and they don't expect him to be one. He tries to do too much which is why he turns the ball over a lot, I find that the problems in his game are mental ones. He thinks he has to be something that he isn't which costs him a great deal, if someone can lay out in black and white what they want him to do and what they expect of him then I'm certain he could be more than serviceable wherever he plays.

A couple of suggestions from me would be:

Paul Johnson and #34 for Beau Dowler - Unsure that Hawks supporters would go for that but seeing as they are giving up #26 for Gibson apparently I thought that perhaps #34 may carry a little more weight than if they kept #26.

Paul Johnson for Mitch Thorp - Straight swap seeing as Thorp has had an injury riddled past and PJ has seemed pretty durable during his tenure with Melbourne so far.

So true of johnson. For years he has been seemingly touting himself as the biggest rover in the competition. He has great size and mobility and just needs to use it more. Tapwork is at times questionable.

Now with the gibson trade completed and hawthorn out of second and third round selections, a player trade would probably need to be arranged. Having said that if the Burgoyne trade goes through then maybe hawthorn will gain some more mid draft selections?

IMO I think the dees should wait and see on johnno. Give him another season to prove himself and the hawks another season to count the cost of a lack of ruck depth. It could only increase his value in a draft in which picks will be scarce.
