Blistering version of Helter Skelter, and to think he was 64 here, I guess he got his old song completely wrong "When Im 64"

Speaking of which, and having very little to do with this thread, Daryl Braithwaite turned 64 yesterday.

The only tenuous link to this discussion that I can think of is that Sherbet covered (and released as a single) Nowhere Man.

:)

The amount of arguments I've had with people about McCartney is mind-boggling. They act as though he wasn't fit to sniff Lennon's farts. But man, to me McCartney is head and shoulders above Lennon. Paul's biggest crime was that he didn't die. Lennon had a five year solo career (with some decidedly dodgy stuff), took time off, came back with an album and was killed.

McCartney got back out there straight away and put out great music from the get-go. Sure, it wasn't the Beatles, but I don't think he meant it to be.

So yeah - if anyone tells me McCartney solo was shit... I shake my head and tell them they must not have ever heard 'Coming Up';

... or 'The Mess'

Saw him at Subi early 90s, put on a pretty good show. I seem to recall it being said (and I could be totally wrong here) that that night was the first ever live performance of Magical Mystery Tour.

I've heard a few live tapes from the last couple of years, sounds like the voice is starting to go, probably time to give it away.

Of all the Beatles, he was probably the best singer, best guitarist, best bass player and best drummer.

On that criteria would you also suggest the likes of Bob Dylan, Roger Daltrey, Robert Plant, Elton John, Paul Simon, et.al give it away because their vocals are not what they once were?

Dylan certainly, should have given it away years ago.

From the recordings I've heard, Sir Paul probably doesn't need to give it away entirely but there are certain songs such as Helter Skelter he just can't hit any more.

I think Macca would benefit in singing certain songs in lower keys, he would still sound amazing as he is still a versatile vocalist, songs in the key of Lady Madonna and 1985 showcase his current abilities very well, by no means should he retire, his shows are pushing 3 hours, no mean feat at his age and he looks fit, alive and happy whilst performing, not an old dog going through the motions like the great man RZ

I honestly would not care if Macca finished up performing live. He is not an artist i really need to see (as solid as he is)He does not seem that essential live these days.. i mean, you really know what you are going to get..and if your outside europe its going to be in football stadiums, not the ideal place to see a show..

But in the studio. Well i think he is still very essential. It's a shame his good run has come to a drought. Would love him to give it his all for one more album. Just go nuts, loose the voice even..

You do realise that a studio album has been in the works and likely to be released in the middle of this year?

Drought due to time in between drinks rather than drought of good material, he is raising his daughter too which he has 1/2 custody of

I see where you come from with your first comment, yes the setlist will be filled with familiar songs heard live for so many years, he has commented that he has included and hopes to add more wings and solo into it depending on which re-issue or new solo album his tours co-incide with. He will remain on my bucket list though :)

My all time favourite artist. Whilst i love Lennon, im more a McCartney guy. he's my man because of the simpleness of his song and the perfection of his melodies.

Maybe Im Amazed is my fave McCartney song. Beatles included. Closely followed by Oh Darling.

As a 23 year old ive never had the chance to see him live. Hopefully there is one more world tour left in him. Im seeing Ringo later this year.

I agree with that first part. Like you i am a McCartney guy. Love lennon to.
As tragic as his death was it does add to his reputation (for want of a better term i guess). Made him more of a legend.

Musically McCartney far out shone Lennon, possibly anyone ever.
Lyrically i think it depends on what you are looking for. Different styles of writers they developed into i think. McCartneys had a more literal meaning a lot of the time. Easier to relate too

I highly recommend you check out the Faces version of this song on Youtube. One of the great live performances of a cover version of any song that you will want to see. Ronnie Lane opens the vocals and sings the first verse with great passion, then Rod Stewart comes in and smashes it out of the park.

I just like listening to some of Paul's great bass playing, around the mid to late 60's this became exceptional on both his famed Hofner then the Rickenbaker which was used on most of his great 70's and 80's bass lines. Silly Love Songs and Goodnight Tonight, Not Such a Bad Boy, Coming Up, Band On The Run, Jet, you name it.

Worth noting that Wings Over America Live Album and the Rockshow DVD are due this year, arguably the pinnacle of Live McCartney as far as singing and bass playing is concerned, I can't wait.

I have that on vinyl (it was a triple IIRC). As I do most (if not all, can't remember) the Wings albums.

I still remember buying Wings Over America too.

Showing my age. :)

Elton in particular.

The crowds still love him though.

I just had a look mate.

Very good, its a bit dirtier then the cleaness of the McCartney song.
Rockin Rod does own the ending.
