thanks for inviting my comments jaffa

The match Committee seem to be pretty happy but I am not.

Jaffa - being a Pies fan, what is your honest assessment of Williams ? I reckon he is a useful enough player but I worry about him coming to Sydney.

I know we don't command alot of respect with Collingwood and I think that Williams may come up here and not really be prepared to take the whole exercise seriously.

I worry about whether he will be 100 % committed to playing for a despised 'interstate' club, I worry about whether the Swans have not sacrificed too much in getting him.

Last year we traded away alot of players to get draft picks because we were supposed to be following a youth policy and thought the best way to rebuild the team post Lockett-Roos was to get some talented youngsters into the squad and develope them from there.

This year I notice we seem to be heading in the opposite direction, looking to trade away draft picks for ready-made players. I just wonder where we are at sometimes.

Williams could be a big success (like Schauble) but I ain't holding my breath, I honestly believe Williams is going to be more of a Scott Russell than an Andrew Schauble.

At his best he can be very damaging. The problem was that his best was infrequent.

He seems to struggle when there is too much presure placed on him. At Collingwood he was generally the second best player so he gained a lot of attention.

At Sydney he isn't going to be the second best player and probably won't get as good opponents. If he can play to his potential he'll be a very handy recruit. His skills are good.

The thing is, he's 27, so you would have to doubt whether he is going to find consistency now.

As you alluded to about not taking it seriously, I don't think that will be a problem. His attitude is pretty good from all reports.

In a better team, with more talented teammates, he should do ok.

BSA

You were a bit stronger in your oppinions of Williams in an earlier post.

Remember writting this?

"Paul Williams is just another low-grade plodder who looks good because his teamates are even worse than he is !!!

Anyone but Paul Williams PUH-LEEZE !

With alot of other good players on the market I just can't believe we are transfixed by someone like Williams."

Don't you hate it when your club backdoors you like that & picks up a player you don't rate.

I find it interesting that Collingwood have traded Williams & are dumping Sav. These are the 2 guys that killed us in rnd 2.

yeah and I'll stand by those comments too !

Jaffa is basically saying the same thing - albeit in not quite so strong language.

Look we've got the guy now so I guess we just have to make a decent fist of it.

I hope for everyones sake I am wrong.

The reason why we are getting rid of players like Sav, Williams, Mal Michael, even A.Rocca has been mentioned is because they are inconsistent. They could all do well at other clubs when the burden isn't placed on them. Put them with players with ability and they might shine. They all have talent.

The problem at Collingwood is that there isn't much talent. If we can get some consistent players by trading inconsistent players then we are doing the right thing.

Which brings me to Fraser Gehrig. Now that doesn't fit in with what I just said.

Wait and see, truth is Sydney has more good young players than a club can reasonably develop, and needed a bit of extra quality.

Is Williams that player, maybe having better players around him will help.

Like BSA I am skeptical, but the choice was Williams no one made him go.

Gonzo

What can we do when Victorians get home sick ?

Its a hit and miss affair sometimes guys come up and love it up here, others just can't fit in properly, they miss the footy culture of Melbourne, they miss their family and friends, they have trouble adjusting to the different lifestyle, they miss a decent cup of coffee !

When Grant left it was no big deal - just another homesick Victorian I thought.

Don't get me wrong - I was very sorry to lose such a good promising player but like I said if the guy wants out what can you do ?

We were very VERY lucky to be able to pick up someone of the calibre of Wayne Schwass in this deal. And I thinks it has turned out pretty nicely for evryone concerned.

Of course it wouldn't have been so great if Schwass hated it up here - but he hasn't - yay !

SCHWATTA.

Your attitude is always positive when the new player goes hard for his new club.

Been good for both clubs

Sydney have gained a lot from this deal. The only problem is Williams' rather big wage. BUT, he is a great player who will benefit from a new environment, especailly Sydney where the pressure isnt as great. keep in mind that he was the league's leading tackler up until the last four weeks of the season. And he can run out of the middle and kick long goals. I think Sydney have done well out of it.

NOW it is up to Collingwood to use these picks wisely to trade for other players. They need talls desperately so Gehrig and Molloy should be up there. If they trade for smaller players Collingwood is doomed to another season of struggle, I hate to say. I'm sure they'll do something though.

well said Mark

Moloy would be good for you guys - a bit of grunt around the forward lines would work wonders, and Molloy is also very versatile, so can play all over the ground and take some pressure off Buckley for a change.

I'm a big Jarrod Molloy fan - I reckon he is much better than Gehrig, and considerably cheaper as well.

Kaangas don't want Molloy... last time we got a fat guy and turned him into a footballer... he got homesick...

Molloy... doesn't quite fit anywhere. He's capable of a freak goal or two but can't take contested marks up forward, and is a little sluggish down back.

The interesting thing with the draft at the moment is tha lack of activity from Essendon. Sheedy's tactic of saying - not good enough unless you win back-to-back - and thereby keeping the team together seems to be working at present. But there's got to be someone who wants more $$$ and glory !
