I was just sitting at my table, looking at my framed #Forever29 Pav poster, replica Doig, piece of playing jumper + all the amazing records this legend of our footy club holds.
But he's also a legend of derbies also. This is the first derby since 2000 that he's not playing in. That's 34 derbies - without missing one in his 17 year playing career.
His first one in 2000 is still the biggest smashing inflicted by either side upon the other, when the weags romped to a 117 point win.
The next one was the infamous demo derby where a fiercely agro Michael Gardner threw a few punches at the then 18 year old before the ball had even been bounced. Before the end of the game, Dale Kickett would have gone completely boonta, Clive would have kicked 7 and Freo would have won only the second derby in their history by just a single point, closing the W-L differential to 10-2.
Over the course of the next 32 derbies that he would play in, he would enjoy a W-L ratio of 18-14 Freo's way, and provide some real highlights that supporters will remember for a long time. Who could forget this mark over Adam Hunter in a tight game - did he ever get up that far off the ground at any time before or after this grab?
Before the end of his career, he would take home 3 Ross Glendinning Medals... with probably his most famous performance coming in 2012 when he absolutely destroyed the weags, outscoring their whole team off his own boot.
So, this week, as we sit back on the couch and watch Derby 45, I'd like us to acknowledge that it's been 35 since there has been a derby without the Great Man playing in it.
