I think the rules for F/S and northern academies will change to exclude them from the first round, or first 30 or something like that. So you will actually have to have the pick to select them. E.g. if Nick Daicos is number 1, then Collingwood should have traded to get the number pick if they wanted him.

Anyway, who knows whether his kids will be good enough or even want to play football ? They're also old enough to already be supporting Freo (11/12), so not sure they would change their allegiance to Sydney just because their dad works there.

Caroline Wilson thinks it is pretty likely that the Father Son rule will be gone in a few years.
Pisses me off cos it means clubs who’ve already benefited will have an advantage that no one else can catch. Like yeah have f/s long enough for clubs to have literal generations of f/s on their team but then scrap it when a club is only just getting their first f/s old enough to qualify.

Pretty sure you could count on your fingers how many players we’ve had that have played 100+ games and have a son who is 18+. And that’s not even taking into account that most of them won’t even be good enough for AFL. Other clubs have hundreds and they’ve reaped the rewards.

Really there should be a cap on some teams and not on others but you can’t trust the AFL to do something that won’t benefit their lovechilds

Well our CEO has whinged about it so we only have ourselves to blame for leading the charge if it gets scrapped.

I think the academy rules will be tightened to remove them having access to kids whose dad player AFL, thanks in part to a big Vic club potentially getting shafted
This is such a straightforward factual sentence you wonder why they never consider putting this in the first place.

Why do they overcomplicate it?

Just make it if you make finals you can't match that year, and this is across the board academy, father son etc.

Under this scenario Gold Coast would still be getting what they got? But so what? They didn't make finals!

Brisbane and Collingwood however would not have, why? Because they made finals. Then the equalisation wheel goes round, while the still developing the game in the northern states and the feel-good factor of father son stays alive.

Yeah he’s whinging about the wrong things. Same mf threw his support behind a wildcard round
At the end of the day i have never whinged about F/S rule even though clubs like Geelong/Collingwood especially have benefitted from it enormously.

Its a romantic thing in the game.

Maybe you just have to make sure you pay the right price at draft time when it comes to this.

I would prefer the AFL & every club had there own academies anyway.

No guarantees you can draft them but you do have to match if they get bidded on earlier from a rival club.

And then its up the club how much your prepared to pay for an academy pick once the rival bid comes in.

You can match it but it will cost you.

I wanted him off Fox Footy but not this way.

Doesn't feel right.

Though i might run into Pav now whenever i venture out to the posh Eastern Suburbs of Sydney
Doubt I’ll see him at the CBH. Better he went as CEO than a draft pick back in the day.

Mate, this hysteria about Pav’s kids, they may not even be any good, or not into playing football at all.
It’s all ****en luck, just like a draft. There are probably just as many f/s failures as successes but I guess people don’t tend to remember those, or quietly ignore them or just not aware. I’m not fussed either way but it’s funny seeing often same people who complain about the supposed advantages of f/s rule also want the AFL to keep it “until we get ours” 😅😅.

Gamble responsibly

Good onya Pav, btw

100% this.

I figure that it takes around 30 years for a club to be around to start getting eligible F/S kids, not counting the restrictive yet ambiguous rules for sons of aligned WAFL players (Ben Cousins anyone?), and at least 40 years before you start to get a critical mass of F/S kids where some are going to be elite talents.

Absolutely it's luck, but it's also probability. The more spins of the wheel you get, the more chance you have to hit the jackpot.

This made me genuinely laugh btw 🤣

I am Born, Bred & live in Sydney

Being the CEO of the Sydney Swans is an important role but in saying that Tom Harley did a fine job without much media attention.

So what constitutes success at the Swans as a CEO

Memberships, Corporate support, crowd numbers, Finals appearances, Premierships.

The Swans have been top 4/6 for most of my life time.

They have a rusted on fan base now.

The odd down year like this year but reality they are similar to Geelong always there abouts though the Swans have never had a dynasty of premierships.

One thing about the Swans though is the hypocrisy with the pride round/jersey but then milking the $$$ from Qatar Airways.
I am intrigued ... born and raised in Sydney (how did you become an AFL fan) and supporting Fremantle ... you are the perfect example of outlier :)

Might benefit us actually. His kids develop in the Swans academy rather than WA which is struggling to produce talent at the moment. Anyway there's no guarantee they even want to play footy, or are good enough to be drafted.

Good on Pav, it's a huge gig for him

Maybe Pav can use this CEO job as practice for the future , When Garlic is gone we can get Pav back as our next CEO , then get his sons to play for Freo if good enough.

The other thing is this rules out Pav handing Moose the cup on the dias ffs.

Pav won't be there in a Freo scarf while he is the Swans CEO.

I always thought Pav was going to be the one on stage to hand it out.

Dave Mundy next in line at this stage ????

Absolutely does NOT rule out PAV handing over the trophy. Who cares what his current job is.

If F/S mean nothing you are saying that:
1. Genetics means nothing.
2. Environment means nothing.

Truly, an amazing insight.
