You guys are going to crucify me for this but (providing Jimmy doesn't want to leave) I wouldn't do it for Pavlich or Riewoldt for that matter. Every post I have read in this thread have given the big thumbs up to the feasibility of this potential trade. Call me crazy or whatever you can conjure up I would not do it.
My reasons are:
1. Loyalty - We talk about a player's duty to remain loyal to a club, to bleed that club's colours, to sacrifice all for the jumper and to do all that is possible to be able to sing the club song after a match. Where is our loyalty to our players as supporters and as a club? We are so quick to accept any gains without knowing the potential dangers. The fact that Pavlich is a gun does not necessarily mean that he will be a "FIT" with the GFC. We lose Bartel whom we have groomed to lead our midfield brigade and is a popular member of the team for Pavlich who is a superstar I agree, but our other players will cringe at the fact that supporters and the club are willing to drop them at first opportunity in order to secure a high price and profile player for another team. (The Moloney Effect is what I'm going to call it)
2. Jimmy = Diesel - Jimmy is a core part of our engine room. Although people might say that Key Position Players are harder to come by, I just can't imagine our side without Bartel in it. His courage, hard at it and in and under style of play. I believe that apart from Ling he is our best candidate for the Chas Brownlow.
3. Team chemistry - Some say that we were a Star Key Forward away from being in GF in 2004. We had Otten and Playfair this year (bearing in mind the injuries are all), our forward line still lacks chemistry. It still lacks the closeness similar to what we have in the backline. An understanding between the players. Having Pavlich there might increase marks and potential goals but building trust and understanding takes time. Croad was a gun KPP for Hawthorn. He moved to Fremantle and failed to deliver. Woewodin was a gun he moved to Collingwood and just lost it. It's not all about recruiting the gun player. Its about developing and keeping the players who love the club to death and guys who are will to put life and limb for their club (For example Michael Voss, David King, Chris Grant, Johnathan Brown).
I know a lot of you guys won't agree with me, but this is my opinion. I wouldn't trade Bartel unless he was desperate to get out of Geelong.
