Also, Pavlich is considered the most versatile big name player in the league.
J Brown the best player, but not the most versatile. Pavlich has been named AA CHB.

Not to be picky, but that and ruckman are pretty much the only places that he hasn't been named All Australian. But yes, he is very versatile. But fact is, versatile or not, he is a better forward than any other position.

ok. But that helps my point. Full Back is a lot harder for a forward/midfielder to play. So, I vote suck it and see !!!
I mean for god sake, we have to win the ball and the game. Not be defensive all the time. What would the uproar be if he was going to play on Buddy, I wonder ???

Justifiable and universal outrage and disappointment I imagine.

Ha, now who is assuming things that others didnt say? Or are you slyly trying to teach me and others a lesson?

;)

I also remember pav getting reported last year for running through someone.

Major step backwards :(

How so? Games are won and lost in the middle. We've won what, 10 of our last 23 games and our best ball winner is out for the year so drastic actions are required.

We currently have a giant ruckman tapping the ball down to Josh Carr..... and Josh Carr. :( Bell plays predominantly half forward now (and was never a huge clearance winner anyway), Peake's not a ball winner, Crowley's out of form, Headland is best coming off the square to receive the handball, Dodd's playing back, Michael Johnson handballs like an 8 year old girl, Mundy's scared of his own shadow, Macca and Matt Carr are old and slow and Solomon is out. Have I missed anyone?

If there is a better option than Pavlich someone let me know.

They wont be the ones we want. Macca will still play I bet

I reckon Macca has been better than Matt Carr for two years now. McManus wasn't great on the weekend but he kicked a couple of goals. He has two weeks to turn it round or he makes way for Solomon for round 4.

Sounds good, all we need to do is work out how Pav is going to kick a ball out of the center square and mark it at Full Forward.

We traded 2 handy players and a top ten pick for a full forward who has been an All Australian. We also have Drum, Murphy and Campbell who have shown glimpses of being ready to step up. Then there's the bloke known as The Wiz who can take a mark and kick the odd goal.

Murphy who just isn't up to it?

If I recall correctly Murphy kicked 24 goals in an 8 game period during 2006. Then Connolly/Schwab in their wisdom decided he wasn't good enough and recruited a guy with big biceps to replace him.

Murphy and Campbell can play, I have no doubt.

The only time Pav can play in the middle is if Tarrant, McPharlin, Farmer and Des are all playing forward. Any less than that and Belnakor is right, he will have to work out how to get to his own kicks.

I should point out that I am not in favour of Pav in the midfield, but if it is to happen then that is the only acceptable scenario.

Why? In 2003 Pav was an All Australian midfielder, we won 14 games and our two key forwards were J-Lo (who never looked comfortable at full forward), and Croad (who ended up being dropped late in the year after a shocking season). And that was when Hase and Bell were in great from.

With Hase out and Bell near the end we can either play our best player in the middle, or groom the young blokes for 2009.

I'd say playing Pav for roughly a quarter (average, not just one whole quarter) a game in the midfield would do us some good, not JUST when we are losing or lost some clearances, but every game, at regular intervals. He could swap with Bell, or just let Pharlap go forward for those times. It's these sorts of "risky, never done before, multiple switching of these multitalented players" that Harvey needs to take advantage of. Roll the dice, stack our forward and midfield and let the back line go weak.

Yep, approximately 3 x 15 minute bursts with a variety of forward set ups while Pav's in the middle.

Shake it up Harvs and try some variety-
HF- Schammer Tarrant Michael Johnson
FF- Farmer Warnock Headland

HF- Bell Tarrant Headland
FF- Farmer McPharlin Hayden

HF- Tarrant Michael Johnson Farmer
FF- Bell McPharlin Sandilands

HF- Headland Gilmore Bell
FF- Sandilands Tarrant Farmer.

Would it not be easier to find midfielders? Put the youngsters in, I know Brades you dont thik it is the answer, but you cannot tell me palmer couldn't have got 10 possesions and made more mistakes than the oldies did.

Sure giving the young blokes a regular chance would be good for the future, but I'm not ready to write off 2008 just yet.

Dom wants it, but again, moving a top five in the league player from his possie to midfield where he becomes a B plus player isn't logical. Now before you go and get cranky, the ability to play forward so effectivley and be a good midfielder still makes you a champion, it is not a slight, just a fatc he isn't a good midfield as forward.

You're right, he is a better forward than he is a midfielder. But he's a better midfielder than all of our other options so what do you do? I rate Farmer/Tarrant/Murphy/Campbell/Headland as better forwards than Peake/Crowley/Schammer/Johnson are as midfielders.

I don't see all this B grade stuff though. In 2003/2004 when Pav was a mid he was still considered among the elite players in the comp.

I reckon Michael Johnson is a beter forward option. He's also playing shithouse so a change could be just what he needs.

I'd prefer Mundy up forward than Johnson, but the way Johnson is playing, it may be the only place for him (other than Perth) At least if he's close to goal and kicks it forward, it might go through, rather than straight to the opposition :o

I reckon Johnson's a faster lead and a much better contested mark.

If I recall correctly Pavlich kicked 73 goals in 2007. Then Dom in his wisdom decided the recruits who are midfielders should cool their heels while the best forward we have turns into an average midfielder.
Ibbotson, Palmer, Schammer, Obrien, Mayne, Foster, Headland can play, I have no doubt.

;)

The young blokes have shown a bit. But do you expect to win games with Mayne, Palmer, Ibbo and O'Brien working together in the centre square? Didn't seem to work with Marc Murphy and Bryce Gibbs, or for the young blokes at Richmond even though Foley got plenty of the ball.

If we're sitting 3-9 at the break I'd be happy to get as much experience into the young fella's as possible. But at this stage lets try to win games of footy eh.

In an ideal world, I wouldn't have either of them there dom (and I'm sure you wouldn't either). Mundy's disposal is far too valuable at the moment. He needs to be wherever will allow him to receive the ball and deliver it to Pav's chest, preferably half a dozen or so times a game. I hate to say it, but Johnson reminds me of Dion Woods at the moment.

Who had the most clearances on the ground on Saturday?
Headland...who had the most 1st possessions for Freo? Headland.
How many errors did Johnson (Mark), McManus, Carr (Matt) make? Almost half?
How many more errors did we make than Collingwood? Squillions.
Sandilands winning the ruck. If McManus', Johnson's and Carrs possessions alone are taken by the new breed who cut the errors by even 20%, Pavlich looks the goods.

Every time Pavlich has gone into the guts, IN RECENT MEMORY, it's not been a game turner.

So Pav into the middle, McManus and Matt Carr out of the team for young blokes and Pavlich, Headland and Josh Carr roving to Sandilands? Sounds awesome Lach, I hope that's how we start Saturday night. :thumbsu:

That's because he goes in for 5 minutes. Harvey should have played him onball for the final quarter against the Pies when it was obvious that our veterans were struggling.

There was a game a couple of years ago at Subi and Brown smashed us in the middle.
I'm with Bradesman, we've got to try something because the little runts we have in there this w/end need some big bodied individuals as well. Plus he makes the opposition wary, don't make any mistake about that. Aggro or no aggro, we have got to try it before the season slips away.
And McPharlin forward with Headland, and bring in Drum.
Buddy gets isolated but, if we get the ball our way hopefully we are in front enough by the time and we have Buddy sorted.
If we have to do 'something' like this already it means that Harvey's plan A is already stuffed and we are on to plan B.

Pav is an AA CHF and having him do a bit of everything will hurt our team. Jonathon Brown never did the midfield thing when the Lions were winning preimerships and now that they have a decent midfiled again he will rarely do it again.

Harvey needs to get his act together and quick. He's a first year coach but being coach of Freo doesn't buy you much time unfortunately.

Great, Pavlich in the midfield more shit copping for me. All me mates go "Ha, look, you know Freo's doing shit when Pav has to go in the middle".

Pav is an AA CHF for God's sake. He is at his most dangerous there, he is most valuable for the team there. Kick the midfield up the ass Harvs you hard nut and get them to deliver the ball to the men up front.
