Pavlich to play midfield role: Harvey

26th March 2008, 11:15 WST

getfile.aspx

Star Fremantle Docker Matthew Pavlich may have a greater role to play in the midfield, according to coach Mark Harvey.
Speaking at a media conference this morning, Harvey again leapt to the defence of the Dockers older players, saying it was too early to write them off after just one round.
Harvey also said Chris Tarrant was likely to play in this weekend’s match against Hawthorn at Subiaco Oval despite recent criticism of the key forward’s form.
And Harvey said selectors were likely to make three changes this weekend but would not elaborate.

Sigh Belnakor, get a grasp on tactics for once.

You shove him in the centre square for the restarts and then put him down forward straight after. Its what Brisbane do with JB and it works well for them, so why can't we do it? Oh, because you said so.

Sounds good, all we need to do is work out how Pav is going to kick a ball out of the center square and mark it at Full Forward.

What like Taz who can't get a kick, and when he does he couldn't hit the side of a barn with a handful of wheat? McPharlin our best backman? Campell who goes MIA in the big league? Murphy who just isn't up to it?

The only time Pav can play in the middle is if Tarrant, McPharlin, Farmer and Des are all playing forward. Any less than that and Belnakor is right, he will have to work out how to get to his own kicks.

I should point out that I am not in favour of Pav in the midfield, but if it is to happen then that is the only acceptable scenario.

So explain this to me then. Why was it so successful when Brisbane only had JB and Brennan up forward to take marks. JB went in the midfield, Brisbane still went well with it. All you need is some forward line pressure or one guy who can take a mark. Hell, Spread the ball wide to the flanks and wait for Pav to come back through and take the mark. Its not that hard.

I suggested this last season, and every season going back to his midfield days. Problem is he rarely plays in the midfield anymore, so he is a bit rusty.... going by his recent attempts there. He just doesn't have much agro in him either, J Brown when he goes in there tries to intimidate the others... and it works!

I'd say playing Pav for roughly a quarter (average, not just one whole quarter) a game in the midfield would do us some good, not JUST when we are losing or lost some clearances, but every game, at regular intervals. He could swap with Bell, or just let Pharlap go forward for those times. It's these sorts of "risky, never done before, multiple switching of these multitalented players" that Harvey needs to take advantage of. Roll the dice, stack our forward and midfield and let the back line go weak.

When exactly did this work for Brisbane? Last year...no finals for them. The year before? Again, no finals with Brown only playing 10 games. 2005...no finals, with Brennan playing 5 games. 2004, the last time they made the finals saw Brennan get 5 goals in 9 games, so it wasnt then.

So when was this magical time?

The problem with this is that (and you may remeber) we will have the issue we used to have when he was in the middle, there isn't a A grader marking forward to kick to.

I think taking Pav from the forward line to the midfield robs us of a 70 goal plus a year forward who gets 15-20 possies a game, to a midfielder who may be ranked around B+.

Would it not be easier to find midfielders? Put the youngsters in, I know Brades you dont thik it is the answer, but you cannot tell me palmer couldn't have got 10 possesions and made more mistakes than the oldies did.

Dom wants it, but again, moving a top five in the league player from his possie to midfield where he becomes a B plus player isn't logical. Now before you go and get cranky, the ability to play forward so effectivley and be a good midfielder still makes you a champion, it is not a slight, just a fatc he isn't a good midfield as forward.

It worked for them last year by them winning games. I never said they got the finals, but when he went into the midfield they started winning more of the ball and kicking goals at a time of need. I never said anything about finals.

God damn, what is it with you people and assuming things I say? If I don't say them, don't make it seem like I say them. ffs. I'd rather talk to Eagles supporters.

Easy champ, no need to go postal. You said they were "so successful" with the tactic...it is not a big stretch to interpret that as making finals, or even winning more than they lost (9W-12L by the way). I made the mistake of defining success as winning enough matches to make the finals. Apologies. If you don't want people misinterpreting what you say maybe you should be clearer in how you say it. If lots of different posters are misunderstanding you maybe the problem lies with you.

Besides, Brown is a different type of player to Pavlich. Just because they are both forwards doesn't mean that what is good for one is good for the other.

Its pretty hard to misinterpret "Brisbane went well" as, Brisbane went all the way to win 20 flags on the trot.

Sorry I forgot Brown is tall, large and intimidating with his physical presence and Pavlich is small, short, and invisible.

There was a game a couple of years ago at Subi and Brown smashed us in the middle.
I'm with Bradesman, we've got to try something because the little runts we have in there this w/end need some big bodied individuals as well. Plus he makes the opposition wary, don't make any mistake about that. Aggro or no aggro, we have got to try it before the season slips away.
And McPharlin forward with Headland, and bring in Drum.
Buddy gets isolated but, if we get the ball our way hopefully we are in front enough by the time and we have Buddy sorted.

Ha, now who is assuming things that others didnt say? Or are you slyly trying to teach me and others a lesson?

Anyway, "went well" could (nay, should) be interpreted as making the finals. Surely if you are so keen to base our gameplan on another team you would prefer that it was at least 50% successful over a season? Also, pretty sure that no team has won 20 consecutive flags...but feel free to prove me wrong.

To the other point, Brown is a bullocking/bash-and-crash type of player, Pavlich is not. When was the last time Pav ran through a bloke? Again, I looked at my post and I am almost certain that I didnt compare physical attributes, merely said they are different types of players...i.e. play the game in a different fashion.

Also, Pavlich is considered the most versatile big name player in the league.
J Brown the best player, but not the most versatile. Pavlich has been named AA CHB.

Dont think he would be considered more versatile than a certain freak from Port, or one from sydney. But that isn't to say he is not versatile. However he has got bigger and thicker in the body since he played in the backs and midfield area.

Still would rather he did as was done on the weekend, short bursts middle, 95% attack.
