i think pav should play a true CHF role.. not this half CHF half FF shit.. tarrant play HFF and pay murphy or mcpharlin at FF.

if our midfield is that bad that pav has to play in the middle then really who are we kidding.. no top 4 team should have to have their gun CHF play in the middle..

You would be spewin if you were the forward coach and the mid coach comes along and poaches Pavlich! Really this is a short term fix at best, Pavlich is our match winner and he will do it from CHF. As much as I love Pav I dont see him as the kind of player that will go in hard at packs and win the ball in the middle, nor should he have to.

Pavlich is the 2nd best CHF in the competition and we want to play him in the midfield:mad:

How about kicking the bums out of the midfield who can't do their jobs properly or getting the coaches to instruct the midfield how to win their positions.

Can't remember Geelong, Port Adelaide, Hawthorn, Eagles sending in their KPP into the midfield to get them to win a clearance?

Lets be completely honest. Pavlich is rarely beaten on the lead. His leading is excellent but our delivery is poor. When the ball is kicked on his head and he has to wrestle for position against a FB/CHB he is actually a very poor option. I can't remember the last time he's tossed an opponent aside in a show of strength.

Our midfield is clearly struggling at the moment. We lack players with crisp ball handling skills. Our handballing in close is actually quite bad. Hence we are missing Hasleby so badly. Majority of our midfielders miss their handpasses by about a foot, which is devastating in todays game. Pavlich is the complete player, his handballing skills match his footskills. We could do with his class through the middle.

Its not a bad option moving Pavlich to the midfield. We aren't devoid of tall options upforward. When Warnock returns, given Gilmore is capable of cameo's in the ruck, both Sandilands and Warnock can play forward intermittently. We have Tarrant, who has shown without Pavlich in the team he is actually a good forward target. We played him without Pav against Carlton and Kangaroos. In both games he was one of our best.

Campbell, Murphy, Keplar are all tall forward options who are waiting in the wings. Similarly Mourish seems to be developing at a phenomenal rate. Reserves to league. Kicked 4.0 in the season opener in the WAFL. The tall forward options aren't as good as Pavlich, but they exist.

We need to do something to our midfield. Without Haze, its going to struggle this year. We can't rely on first or 2nd year players to lead our midfield. Pavlich into the midfield may just be a catalyst for something special.

A guy who can kick 6 goals is a match winner.
Other teams fear pavlich in the forward line as he has the ability with the righ service to dominate an tear the game apart.
They would spend half the week deciding who to play on him,who to fill the gaps/run to help out etc etc.

Take him out of the forward line an the other teams will be rubbing there hands together saying thank you god.

He is not damaging in the midfield.
At best he can be 1st guy with hands on ball an maybe break a tackle or 2 an get a scrambliy kick going forward.
Not really setting up goal opportunities.

If we are desperate yes put him in midfield but that should always be last resort.

We play Hawks this week
Lance Franklin has speed, strength an a great mark.
He has the tools to play midfield in a Goodes type role.

Now tell me as a freo fan wouldnt you just luv seeing him lineup an play the whole game in midfield instead of causing havoc down forward?

Why the f**k not? He's our captain. Our best player. We are devoid of classy players in the middle. It makes sense. We don't expect to see Daniel Kerr type spins and turns and acrobatics. But if Headland is running into space and Pavlich has the ball with 3 players hanging off him. 9 times out of 10 the guy has enough strength to make sure his handball hits the target. Thats what Fremantle is missing. Midfielders that'll hit targets by hand under extreme pressure.

I'll tell you, he'll be able to throw his weight around a lot easier in the midfield against smaller players than up forward where he's monstered by a FB and often has a 2nd or 3rd player dropping into his space.

Oh Please!!

Will some of you get a grip!!

Harvey has made it public that Pav will play some time in the midfield. Holy Shit....what a revelation!!

Good I hope that he does!!......From time to time. Not much though!!:thumbsu:

But please don't forget that Harvs was taught by the greatest fox in the business in Sheedy;)

Get over it people.....we were beaten by a top 4 side from last year at THEIR HOME GROUND......and we weren't that bad at all.

Yes we had our problems.....and yes I disagreed with the selection panel......and yes I thought that certain players were played out of position......

But NO......I will not hang them out to dry just yet.......

Round 2.......starts this weekend people......20 to go!!

I dont think he should have to go into the middle because it isnt where he is most needed, just like I wouldnt expect Grover to play FF or Sandi to play FB. Pavlich is one of the best CHF in the game and we want to put him in the middle? Crazy idea to me but thats just my opinion.

Pav pinch hitting in the midfield, McPharlin pinch hitting up forward. You guys have seen this plenty of times before, its straight out of the CC coaching manual. Your greatest worry should be that Harvs can't think up something more original.

If we have to do 'something' like this already it means that Harvey's plan A is already stuffed and we are on to plan B.

Harvey needs to get his act together and quick. He's a first year coach but being coach of Freo doesn't buy you much time unfortunately.

That's a load of shit. It's not Harvey's fault that he's coaching a list with f*** all midfielders.

I remember in Pav's golden run of form back in 05 - kicked 39.6 from 50 marks in 8 games...

In: Mayne, Palmer, Drum (if he's fit)

Get Taz on his bike in the leadup role along with Mayne, push some numbers behind the ball and get your tall defenders and smaller guys (Palmer especially) to run the lines and kick long to headland/farmer and Pav ect in an open forward line.

your strength is just not in winning clean ball in the midfield since you just don't have the players to do it, it's all about creating run out of defence through extra numbers and kicking long to awesome forwards.

My opinion anyway, not like I watch many freo games :D

And if we do that then our midfield/hbf should be coached to provide fast delivery into the forward line at every opportunity, to the best available player. No backwards, sideways anything. No double leads looking for space. That forward line, plus Farmer and co, will do very well even against an extra man in defence, and even with ordinary delivery. Every one of them is a weapon.

Buddy the Brave? Oh dear.

Nothing wrong with either of those moves.

I agree, there isn't anything wrong with those moves, just that we've seen it all before, you won't be fooling anyone with it.

And the Buddy the Brave thing, well i suppose it's a bit of wishful thinking, if you read something often enough you start to believe it's true.

At least we're getting a picture of the type of thing you'd like Harvey to try; Get posters on bigfooty to come up with names like Tarrant_kicks_str8 and Peake_runs_forward. Then at training, get the players to read them.

Does anyone know which games in 2006 and 2007 Pav either started or played at least 3 qtrs of footy through the midfield? Or anyway I could find out?

It seems to me after watching him play over the weekend he doesnt look as confident running through the middle as he used to? Same happened last year a couple of times?

Anyone else think this?

I can't remember much except Pav not being able to get a hand on an opponent when trying to tackle last week when in the midfield. Too immobile in there for my liking now and we will get hurt going the other way.

pav's never been a great tackler

i notice that he never tackles guys running past him. probably doesn't want his shoulders popping out

When he played midfield he trained specifically for it, building his stamina and reflexes for that specific role. For the last couple of years he has developed his body and skills to play as a key forward. Going into the midfield should really only be a shock tactic for the team when the occassion requires. Not just if we are getting beaten, but to unsettle something, and create mismatches.

Excellent work Gav, its like all those motivational slogans they have on the walls in the changerooms, Harvs just needs to get a bit more creative with them.
