Where did I say he should have been axed? You don't axe a guy like Pavlich
As for the guys you quoted, all greats of the modern game. But no greater than, for example, Voss, Jakovich, Tredrea, McLeod, Crawford, Kelly or Brown who were a few of my favourites of the modern game that retired at the same age as Pav or younger

If Pav has to retire at the end of this year, I hope it's under the same circumstances as Crawford, and not the rest, who suffered career shortening injuries.

Yeah, there might be 30 A-grade midfielders in the comp but barely any of them are as good as Fyfe. He is easily a top 5 midfielder of the competition.

As a forward he will never get anywhere near to being a top 5 key-forward of the competition. Dangerfield maintains the same goal average as a midfielder as he did as forward. Fyfe will be very similar. These guys just beat up on their opponents who are way out of their depth when they get dragged forward. Dangerfield did it to Crowley a few years ago and booted 3 goals on him; he would never have gotten away with it on McPharlin, for example.

They have the aptitude to play as a forward which is great, but it is accentuated due to them being matched up against someone who is inept at defending aerial contests. Once you replace the tagger with a competent defender who is the same size as them, good in the air and not an undersized dwarf - things will get a lot tougher.

Footy is won and lost in the midfield. Keep him there and let him to continue to perfect his forward game. He has the potential to kick 25-30 goals a year and average 26+ possies a game. His output and benefit to the team as a midfielder is always going to outweigh what he can produce as a forward. As a forward the opposition will be able to contain him a lot easier; as a midfielder he is pretty much impossible to tag and contain as he is a contested ball winning machine and he can just destroy his opponent by drifting forward and out-marking them with ease. He is always going to be a lot more damaging as a midfielder, he is like the anti-Pavlich.

Pavlich was never that great as a midfielder, he only ever had one season where he averaged over 20 touches a game when he was playing there. Fyfe is the opposite, he has shown that he is absolutely elite as a midfielder by averaging just under 26 disposals a game since he moved out of the forwardline is his debut season. He is not the reincarnation of Pavlich and he is not capable of emulating what Pav did to that level, his game is suited to being a midfielder and part-time forward, not the reverse.

That saves me typing for 20 minutes. Well done sir.

I am an unabashed Pav tragic. My games room wall is literally adorned with framed jumpers with his signature. I've bought the bloody things when we didn't have the funds to do so but they are like milk and bread to me. I buy them because I have to, not merely because I want them. They are non negotiable, essential, must haves. They define me and anyone who lives under my roof. Take it or leave it.

For the last 18 months I have been preparing for the Fyfe era and preparing and was firmly in the "Pav to retire in 2014" camp ala Darren Glass who I believe got it right. Dean Cox went too long and was laughable in the end which I could not deal with for the man who has defined my football club for so many years.

Like most of you I've spent a lot of my adult life watching him dominate mid, back and fwd. Listened to commentators laud his brilliance. I flown from other countries to watch him on the big stage for the last few years. The last thing I want not just for myself but for my 3 sons to see is a young, average defender make our great man look second rate. I couldn't bare to watch 6 game define his 350 odd, and cast a shadow on the 300 perfect games. Pav deserves better and it would leave a bitter taste in my mouth.
Skip to March 2015. After looking at Tabener's impact on Pav I will reserve judgement. If Pav get the 2nd best defender, or the extra man concentrates on Tabener we suddenly have the best 2nd fwd in the comp. I truly believe this. The rest is up to Tabs and Ross. Mr Lyon this guy needs to play every game this year. I am one jumper short. It has a 29 with a picture of him on the diace holding the cup.

Sincerely,
Pavs #1 fan

Wouldn't read too much into that #glasto2010. It has been planned for a long time, and it's not unusual to have a testimonial in the year prior to retirement.

I am an unabashed ..... snip....

Maybe he's waiting to see who comes in via trade week before making a decision? If we get Bennell and McCarthy wouldn't mind seeing just the one more year to give it a final crack, if not I just think we don't have enough for a real shot and he may as well call it a day as we look to life after the great man.

I'm in two minds , I remember back to Brad Johnson at the Bullies who went on a year too long and was a liability in the finals in 2010, and was un-dropable due to his standing at the club , therefore the Bullies lost a PF basically carrying him.

On the other hand if Pav plays limited time and retains touch He would be handy. There is no doubt that he is not as good as he was.

A lot of the angst of this finals series has been directed at Mayne who by any objective measure was better than Pav.

It is probably better on balance that He retires , unfortunately.

How many seasons did Pav carry us? How many fans did he bring to the club.

He deserves to be carried for one season, but really he is not the one we're currently carrying.

I know it is emotional , but better for him to go out now than incur the wrath of the fans next year. I would say He was partially carried in 2015, but He put in a shocker in the PF in all honesty.

Pav pinged his calf in the prelim, it's not surprising he didn't play that well. He still did better than Kennedy and Darling against the Hawks defenders.

If he goes around again, for the love of god please just restrict him to a small load. Or else he'll almost certainly be lame by the finals. I think his achilles/calf area is almost a chronic complaint, simply can't stand the stress of a whole season. But if he is managed, then it could maybe work.

I would look at the fixture and circle say the 1-2 MCG games we'll get, and every game at Subi against teams above bottom 4. Try to pick around 10-12 games in total. And stick to it no matter what. If everyone else is injured, or we're losing ... then too bad, stick with the plan.

Well, would agree. But not sure I want him to go out like that. And he probably wouldn't either. I#d say he is assessing his body atm to make a decision. Perhaps we know more after the Doig...

A 65 goal season coming up;Cam gets 42 mainly due to several swooning incidents where he is overwhelmed by the Pavness of the occassion.
FIXED.

That's what I was thinking Kram Pav is probably weighing up what happens this trade/draft etc etc period. If big sort of scalps are needed ala Bennell.McCarthy & others then I can see him surely going around one more time.

Look I surely hope Pav gives it one more crack in 2016 especially if he's up to it& he doesn't have to play just about every minute of every game.I think that window is certainly still open for Freo& i hope as ever you can finally do it in 2016:thumbsu::).

He was very good in the first half but went down hill from there, IMO if he is to play on should only play home games and keep him fresh for end of season but I'm not certain RTB likes to to that.

Maybe we should take Pav at his word.
He has said that his decision has nothing to do with who Fremantle get in. It has everything to do with whether he is prepared to do a preseason and then perform at the level where he is "fully in".
He also said that he will go away with his wife and have a good chat with her about it.
I have no doubt that Lyon and Fremantle would love for Pav to go around again. I just hope he decides that he can.

This. Exactly what I was going to add this morning. I take it you were at the book launch on Thursday too.

I think he is more unlikely than likely to play on. I personally have a sneaky feeling, despite his comments at the launch about taking a few weeks to assess it all, that he is a fair chance to announce it tonight at the Doig.

He was asked whether he would go around again dependant on being managed or on who we can get through the door during the trade period. Pav's response was that in AFL footy you are either all in or you're not at all, he was unsure where he sat with it all but hadn't had any time or space to get away from the club and from footy in general since the prelim due to the Brownlow with Nat and then he and the fam stayed on in Melbourne for the week. He certainly wasn't emphatic about being all in, which leads me to believe he is likely to call it a day. His position on it seems to be %110 or nothing, if he is still mulling it over he is certainly not 110% committed to going around again and that seems to answer itself.

As sad as it is, by his own lofty standards he would be lowering his colours to go around again for a full season in 2016 no matter who we get to the club.
