Brisbane Lions draftee Jack Payne will miss the remainder of the 2018 season due to a stress fracture on his tibia.

Payne has had ongoing complications with his shin since late March.

After several weeks of treatment and rehabilitation, further assessment has seen the Lions medical team recommend a long-term approach for Payne, with rest a key part of his immediate treatment.

General Manager of Football David Noble said the Club is disappointed that Payne will miss out entirely on the AFL and NEAFL season.

"Long-term injuries to any player are disappointing but it is more frustrating with Jack after he had such an exciting & encouraging pre-season,” Noble said.

In further injury news, Tom Bell injured his ankle in the NEAFL loss to Canberra Demons last Sunday and is expected to miss four weeks.

Sam Skinner, Toby Wooller, Connor Ballenden, Matt Eagles and Cedric Cox are all expected to return to action after this weekend's bye round.

Not something you'd wish on anyone, but he's young. Look at someone like Melbourne's Hogan who didn't play much until he was 20 or 21... Payne's an extra new player we'll have next year who is one year older and ready to go hard.

Disappointing, but overall a 19yo missing a year isn't disastrous. Callum Mills missed most/all of his u18 year due to shin splints and didn't stop him from having an outstanding year straight after.

Add Witherden to that.

I was really looking fwd to seeing jack play this year. If fit i think he would have been given the opportunity eagles received. On the other hand it was good to see what eagles has to offer, it did surprise me. Our tall defence has good depth now, andrews, gardiner, eagles, payne, skinner. A cpl of good small rebounding defenders that can tackle and has pace would be real handy. Hoping cox can become one of them. He could definately benefit from a few lessons with Trevor Gillmeister learning how to hit n stick his tackles. He's not the only one tho.
