It all looks plugged in to me and the only thing I can see on the PSU is on/off and ECO on/off switches.

I'll probably get Scorptec to give it a once over if I have no luck with MS Support later today. The first lady I spoke to who was working on it for just under two hours was "110%" it was a software issue and I've seen at least one other person have issues with shut downs while downloading the 1703 update, so I'm hoping they can get to the bottom of it.

i've had issues with the PSU's out of the box - have a read online about rail voltage. it will power the lights on your MB, but once it comes to powering the whole system with the bits attached it can cause some issues. i can't remember if you can use the bios setup to check voltages.
i've been given PSU's that aren't putting out the necessary amount, accounting for tolerance on 12v rail - computers don't stand a chance.
you could try starting your system without its gpu (hooking up to the integrated graphics), for example.

Been refreshing Scorptec and PCCG about once every half hour. PCCG site updated and 8700k already sold out lol. They’ve got the mobo I want though so will wait for Scorptec to update their site (searching shows there are results but they’re invisible) and even if I miss out and have to wait for second shipment of CPUs at least I can still get the mobo and even RAM because I know what I’ll be dealing with.

No onboard graphics with AMD CPUs so I can't go down that path unfortunately. The PSU suggestion is a good one though, I'll have to have a look. Thanks. :thumbsu:

Scorptec site updates with 8700k CPU available and locked version already sold out but slim listings of mobos. Thinking I’ll just get the CPU from them and mobo from PCCG. Then read text “must be purchased with a Z370 motherboard.” Constantly refreshing site so I don’t lose 8700k from my cart. Asus Maximus X Hero Z370 board appears. I add to cart and check out. Then out of curiosity I check 8700k listing, “sold out.” Go me. Fingers crossed I receive an email tomorrow saying my order is ready to pick up and they didn’t just process it without having the stock. Last 12 months I have been ridiculously arsey with concert tickets, grand final tickets, if I’ve managed to pilfer this from under the noses of all the Whirlpool nerds then it might be worth buying a lotto ticket.

Hate to be captain obvious but make sure that everything is seated correctly including RAM. Pull out any PCI-e cards that don't need to be in at the moment as well additional HDDs and see if that makes a difference. I'd also check to make sure your motherboard is mounted on the standoffs correctly too

I wouldn't be too disheartened. Shit always goes wrong for your first build

Dannnnnnnnnn my gaming rig & family rig are both on 1607 & my work laptop is version 15063.

Couldn't give a toss about upgrading to 1703. Sue me!
Yeah MS thought it might be Windows needing to be updated, hence the attempts to update. MS, Scorptec and I have pretty much narrowed it down to RAM or drivers (either not being installed or not liking each other), with something PSU related a possibility as well.

Just picked up all my parts. I wonder if I’ll be up and running before Dan? :D I can’t be stuffed tonight and have an overtime shift in the morning so I’ll get started on it tomorrow, but meant to be going to the soccer so maybe Sunday. I got one of only 2 8700k they received. Apparently only 40 in the country until Christmas.

Good thing this thread says positive things about Scorptec, could be awkward if anyone potted the company :p;)

I finally got my PSU after waiting about a month for the store to get them in and will be getting the rest of my parts tomorrow. I also wonder if I'll be up and running before Dannnnnnnnnn.

Hmm I don't play enough PC games to warrant a full rebuild but if it means beating Dannnnnnnnnn then I might do it :p
Solid reasoning.
Thus begins the BigFooty Arms Race...

Now you know how Pyongyang feels!

Curse me for bagging Dan. Was up early for some overtime then nodded off on the lounge when I got home at lunch time. Now off to the soccer. Hopefully I’ll get it done tomorrow :D. Managed to get the PSU and sorted which cables I need as well as mobo and cpu in but mobo caused some grief. Asus Maximus has a prefitted IO shield and it wasn’t playing nice trying to locate as if it’s not perfectly flush and hard up against the IO part of the case then the mounting screws don’t line up. Was actually getting a bit worried I would have to dremmel the case slightly to fit the IO through.

So many early reviews of these 8700Ks easily hitting 5ghz without delidding. Will shoot for a conservative 4.7 or 4.8 first and see what sort of heat and voltages I’m looking at.

Build complete and up to installing windows. Just noticed I mounted a rad fan upside down though lol. Pain in the arse because the whole thing is glass and I already spent ages wiping all my grubby fingerprints off.

Can’t wait until everything is up and running to change these Trident Z RGB sticks from rainbow. Have to admit it looks pretty impressive how they cycle through the spectrum in sync though.

nekkid pics for now

Stayed up till 6am building and now I'm finished. Currently installing a 4gb windows update and then I'll start downloading drivers.

A big sigh of relief when I saw an image on the screen when I pressed the button.

Done. Won’t start an overclock tonight. Think I’ll let the hardware settle and run some tests next weekend. Haven’t even changed XMP profile for RAM yet. Only issue is that when the computer restarts from a software update or actually choosing restart from start menu is it boots to a blank screen with a flashing cursor. Works completely fine if I physically turn it off and back on again though. Did a quick search and I think it’s just to do with a boot setting in BIOS. I did change something when I first booted it up when I wanted to install a fresh windows on my old SSD.

Final specs:
CPU: i7 8700K
GPU: MSI Gaming X 1080TI
Memory: 32gb (4x8gb) G.Skill Trident Z RGB 3200mhz cl16
Mobo: Asus Z370 Maximus X Hero
Storage: Samsung EVO 500gb SSD
PSU: Corsair AX860
Cooling: Corsair h100i V2 (changed fans to 2x Corsair ML120)
Case: Corsair 570x (added one extra Corsair ML120 at rear)

Monitor: Asus ROG Swift 27” gsync IPS 1440p
KB/M: Corsair K70/Corsair Sabre
Headset: Logitech G933 RGB
(JB had a big sale on Logitech a few weeks ago so thought I’d change it up from Astro A50 lol)

Dannnnnnnnnn did you update your bios? Been some ****y problems with the last two Intel chips which have been fixed via bios updates,
Yeah pretty sure I did that.

Scorptec called earlier; one of the cooler cables wasn't in - which I'd overlooked because the fans were functional (and because I'd already plugged in about five things for it). They haven't fixed it yet (need to drop off the cable) but they think it was probably either the CPU getting too hot (doubt it) or the motherboard realising the cooler wasn't functioning and shutting it down before it overheated, or something. Fingers crossed.

Makes sense. Now that you mention it, quite a while ago, one of my mothboard fan headers stopped working and my system was bugging out badly with crazy high CPU temps. Can't remember if it was freezing up or shutting down. But yeah it was the one my water pump was plugged into. Swapped the 2 around and the pump would work but not the fan. Easy fix by using a different header to power the fan..

Fingers crossed for you Dannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

So for a laptop for the kid that can play your Minecraft type stuff, would this be okay: Have no idea. Is it overkill/not enough/or does the job?

PCs will crash or BSOD when stress testing an overclock and the CPU overheats, so not plugging in a cooler will have the same effect. On an Intel chip this happens about 105C+ and it starts throttling around 95C. I'm not sure what the tolerances are for AMD chips but surely you weren't getting it that hot during processes like just loading software and updating drivers? Anyway, what lead out of curiosity did you leave out? Typically you should get an error at launch and it won't go into POST if nothing is connected to the cpu_fan header. Unless you used the pump header if you have one on your board. I have no idea if that header counts like the cpu_fan header as I connected my pump to the aio header and the rad fans to the cpu fan headers so never got a chance to find out.
