PCs will crash or BSOD when stress testing an overclock and the CPU overheats, so not plugging in a cooler will have the same effect. On an Intel chip this happens about 105C+ and it starts throttling around 95C. I'm not sure what the tolerances are for AMD chips but surely you weren't getting it that hot during processes like just loading software and updating drivers? Anyway, what lead out of curiosity did you leave out? Typically you should get an error at launch and it won't go into POST if nothing is connected to the cpu_fan header. Unless you used the pump header if you have one on your board. I have no idea if that header counts like the cpu_fan header as I connected my pump to the aio header and the rad fans to the cpu fan headers so never got a chance to find out.
That's why I say I doubt it was overheating, but he seemed convinced that it would still be something to do with the cooler.

I'm honestly not sure, I think he said something about the fans being on the wrong header and the actual pump not being connected but I sorta zoned out and had no idea what he was talking about; I just heard, "Do you have these cables? [Yeah I do.] Cool, bring them in and we'll go from there." :p

To be honest, not really surprised that I did something wrong with the cooler - the instructions were pathetically bad and I couldn't find anything helpful online. I had a mate there who has built PCs before and even he was a bit confused, so who knows. Anyway, fingers crossed they're right and that's all it is.

So for a laptop for the kid that can play your Minecraft type stuff, would this be okay: Have no idea. Is it overkill/not enough/or does the job?

  • Dell Latitude E6440 Laptop
  • 14" HD LED Backlit Display
  • Intel Core i7-4600M
  • 2x 2.90GHz Turbo Frequency 3.6GHz
  • 16GB RAM DDR3
  • 500GB HDD Upgradeable to any size
  • Integrated HD Audio & Built-in Stereo speakers
  • Integrated Intel HD Graphics & AMD Radeon 8600m Dedicated Graphics
  • DVD+/-RW Burns both DVD's & CD's
  • Integrated Gigabit 10/100/1000 Network with Ethernet Port
  • Integrated Intel 802.11b/g/n Wireless Internet
  • Integrated Webcam & built-in Microphone
  • Multimedia Card Reader
  • 1-VGA port
  • 1x HDMI Port
  • 2x USB 3.0 Ports
  • 2x USB 2.0 Port
  • 1x RJ-45 Ethernet Port
  • 1x Combo Audio Port

Don't see why that wouldn't be able to handle Minecraft comfortably. Does it have to be Dell, and what is the budget? Just whatever is good enough at best price? JB Hifi often have good sales on laptops and if you know what specs to look for you would be able to grab something more than adequate for a good price.

Really doubt you would have put something on the wrong header! Headers are clearly marked and I'm sure you would have been checking everything you're plugging in two or three times (I certainly do) and don't think you would have got a chassis fan (cha_fan I think?) and cpu_fan around the wrong way. CPU fan headers are typically near the top and chassis fans around the edges so you don't get cables crossing over. Only thing I can think of is at boot the mobo just wants something connected to cpu_fan or aio_pump (typically in the past as far as I know if you water cooled you went into BIOS and told it to ignore cpu_fan) and you either didn't a) connect the radiator fan to the pump (or cpu header) or b) didn't connect the sata cable to the pump to power it (if it has one, I assume it does).

Agree on the instructions, they are stupidly generic so they can connect to any old bozo's computer. You are free to set them up in a couple different configs though.

Not really. No issue whatever the brand. I mean cheaper the better. That one was $580 from memory. Seemed better than some of the Harvey Norman ones that were over $600.

Any special reason for the 7900X? 8th gen chips will be in short supply for the immediate future but the 8700K is less than half the price and faster clock. 8th gen i7s also rocking 6 cores.

Or did I miss the point about the arms race? :D

I think it's a piss take

A mate of my just built an x299 rig with a 16 core Intel thingy. 64gb rams (still room left on his mobo to top out at 128) 2 X 1080ti. 1 TB SSD etc. $6k USD. He's a graphics design & animator though and his work productivity depends on this stuff. Ascended from Mac, will never look back.

Doesn't game at all. Bastard.

That sounds more on the money. Didn't think you would have stuffed up fans and it was over heating. Probably a dud bus controller or something. While they'll replace it no problems under warranty you're going to need to sort out your Windows when you get it back. I assume you got an OEM/1 computer licence which is linked to your mobo. Haven't done it myself but I'm pretty sure you're going to have to hit up Windows support again and get your Windows licence activated on your new board.

Join the PC master race they said, it's easy and user friendly they said.

After being in the console wilderness for a few years and only really getting back into the PC stuff the last 6 months I really did forget about all the little gremlins that you don't experience in console gaming.

Latest update, they think it's a bum motherboard. :straining:
How's your luck? Bloody hell!

Fingers crossed for you that it's all smooth once you get a replacement.
Don't forget you'll need some thermal paste to re-seat your cooler!

I will probably just get them to put it all back together.

I've tried my luck enough, I've done it once, that'll do me. :rainbow:

Going to be building a new PC in about a month or so. This is my first draft I've come up with at this stage:

CPU - Intel i7-8700k
CPU Cooler - Corsair H100I v2 Liquid Cooler
Motherboard - MSI Z370 Gaming Plus ATX
RAM - G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB DDR4-3200
SSD - Samsung 850 EVO 250GB
HD - Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM
GPU - Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1080 8GB G1
Case - NZXT S340 Elite Black
Power Supply - Corsair TXM Gold 650W 80+ Gold Semi Modular

Wanting to pick up a 144Hz monitor as well. Thinking 1440p with G-Sync but the prices are crazy. Could drop $1000 on it and I know that I'd use it a lot but when the 1080p are less than $600 they seem a bit more budget friendly. Still think I'll go the 1440p one.

I've got this bad boy. Expensive for a monitor due to gsync and I questioned if it was worth it at the time but I swear by it now. Gsync is awesome, can jack everything to ultra at 1440p and don't have to worry about hitting 144mhz (or 165mhz if you 'overclock' it) for it to be smooth.

Yeah I've been looking at that or the Acer Predator XB271HU which is $100 cheaper and reportedly has a lower lag time overall.

What are your thoughts on the build as a whole?

Finally got around to taking some pictures of my build.

Really enjoyed the experience... only because there were no issues.

I really want to change the colour of the RAM, but I'm scared to because of all the horror stories I've read about the G.Skill software.

I know the Predator you are talking about. That was my first preference because of the price. Image quality wise every review I read couldn't split the two. The final deciding factor for me was pretty pedantic but I read many reviews where the monitor itself is a bit unstable. When I checked it out myself it wasn't as bad as some people made out but it did wobble a little (maybe this changes from monitor to monitor) where as the ROG Swift is sturdy as a rock. The other thing was even more trivial and that was the OSD. I found the Predator OSD a bit laggy and unintuitive to navigate compared to the Swift which was fast and snappy and really easy with the little joystick on the back of the panel. Most people just set it once and forget so this is just nit picking but when I was going to drop a grand on a monitor I just felt IMO the ROG Swift was a better build quality. Not that there was anything wrong with the Predator, I just felt more comfortable with the Swift in the end.

Build is good. My only two cents would be to up the PSU from 650w to 750w just for extra headroom and it doesn't really cost much more. I'm not sure what the availability on the 8700k is at the moment. I got mine on launch day and the shop told me I got one of only two they could get in and stock will be tight until about Christmas.

The white is beautiful! I feel like I would need to sterilise myself to touch it. I actually think the Trident Z RGB RAM in rainbow suits the white theme. Only reason I got that RAM myself is because I was getting an ASUS mobo so I could control it with Aura. And you're right, don't go near that G.Skill software. I've read it goes as far as screwing with the SPD. I was going to go the Corsair Vengeance RGB RAM if I didn't get an ASUS board. Not as blingy but I was determined to have a 'hot' theme, so no rainbow. Not sure how I could show it but my 4x8gb sticks slowly slide from yellow to orange/red, kind of looks like fire and looks great in the dark inside the tinted glass case surrounded by red fans.

This makes me realise just how bad my cable management is. :D

I've read about some people having downloaded the ASUS aura software even though they have different branded mobos and that has apparently worked.

The other side isn't as pretty. So many cables and so little room!
