I'm nitpickming here but one of the things I hate about gaming headsets is how damned ugly they can be. Like a lot of PC gaming gear, manufacturers go way too crazy with the coloured plastic. I'm looking at buying a mechanical keyboard right now and it's the same damn problem there too. Why do they think gamers all have terrible taste?

My G933 have customisable RGB lighting. Just let that sink in... a headset... with RGB lighting.

I got a Corsiar K70 keyboard recently to go with my new build which aside from the key lights I just thought was a fairly low frills mechanical. Instead when I loaded up the software to have a look it started doing things like making different coloured ripples when I pressed a key. Great if you want epilepsy. Once I sorted all of that out it's actually pretty decent. I went with the Cherry red switches which was an upgrade from my old KB with blue switches that I bought without proper research and realising the clicking would do my head in, and the K70 takes up less room on my desk because it doesn't come with a foot of macro switches on the side that I have no use for.

I know right. Who the hell wants rainbow coloured lights beaming out of their keyboard? I can maybe see myself lighting up WASD for games but that's about it. Right now I'm tossing up between Cherry MX Reds and Browns and not really sure which way to go. I really need to find a place to sample these as I've heard it's all down to personal preference.

It probably makes people think there's actually a 5.1/7.1 speaker system in there. Also it's cheaper to make some big clunky thing than trying to engineer something smaller.

This colour thing is out of control because people actually go out and buy shit like this.....

Backlit keyboards I can deal with if it's subtle, but some of the stuff out there is ridiculous.

When I put together a budget build for my housemate I chose a Corsair Carbide 200R because it was the only case I could find that didn't make me want to puke.

That's what I did. The base of my ROG Swift monitor has red lights, so I made the keyboard backlight red with WASD and spacebar white. Most computer shops I've been to have a MX Cherry display sample thingy with the different switches. Can't really recommend which as it just comes down to personal preference. I did like the response of the blues but the clicking was crazy. I tried out the brown but found them too soft for my touch. Red was the sweet spot and not too noisy.

haha Linus actually used this one in his ridiculous RGB build!

I love it.
Reminds me of Spaceballs when ludicrous speed goes plaid!

It just brings back bad memories for me. I witnessed the beginning of this whole "modding" fad 15-20 years ago and had hoped it died a horrible death, but now with every company putting RGB on every god damn thing it's making a comeback. I used to help run 600+ person LANs, and just never understood the people who turned up with Full Tower cases and massive window kits they'd build themselves so they could show off the multiple Cold Cathode tubes they'd mounted in their cases that end up lighting up half the room. This is just the same shit all over again, except everyone is too lazy to leave the house now.

Seems like everything has RGB lights these days. Even my Asus Strix 1070 & my Logitech g303 mouse have them. It's inescapable.

Yeah, my case is literally a black box (Fractal R5)

Mine too... Shoved everything in there, spent exactly zero minutes managing the cables, closed the side panel, put in under my desk and haven't opened it in 2 years. Probably due for a clean

Same, I refuse to buy that crap. The sound quality is mostly terrible too. I've got

Sorted

Also re keyboard, just get a standard corsair k70 (non rgb rubbish), turn the lights off and be done with it

Just bought this for $199. The AD-700X was $179 so $20 extra for a built in mic seems better value to me instead of a separate unit...

Yeah for only $20 extra I'd say it was worth it. I haven't tried these personally but I've heard these are great headphones for a gaming. Would love to hear your impressions.

I'm running these...

Also recently picked up a second hand Astro Mixamp because the Microstreamer can't be used with my consoles. Not sure if I will now flog the HRT off on ebay but I really love that amp for listening to music. The Mixamp is good too but I only really got it for it's connectivity options. The Microstreamer beats it for sound quality.

+1 for Audio-Technica, love my M50x (white).

These are considered one of the best budget options out there. I tried out a friend's black M50X's and the sound quality is great but I found them really uncomfortable. The head band felt like it was digging into my skull the whole time. Maybe I just have a weird shaped skull.

I have that exact pair, best headset I've owned as far as PC gaming is concerned.

Use those as my office/general use pair (the Matte Grey version), they're a decent gateway headphone to the expensive hobby of personal audio :)

Loving the move to the Philips Fidelio X2s for home headphones (they appear to be dust magnets though :) )

Thanks for all the replies in regards to headphones choices guys! Plenty to go over and look into. My main concern is that I will use the headset for both PC and console gaming (PS4) and need something that is easy to switch. I'm not opposed to a wired headset just personally prefer to have wireless. I sit at a desk for PC and console gaming so the cords isn't the biggest issue but less cords is definitely nicer.

I've heard from some people that digital audio is generally the way to go for multi-platform headsets rather than analogue as analogue relies on the sound-card quality. Not sure whether any of you audiophiles can enlighten me on this?

Coming from an audio layperson I'm very happy afer 1 hour of gaming. My previous headset was a $50 Thermaltake job which was good enough at the time.
The sounds are crisper and cleaner and the bass is easy softer and less boomy which is great for PUBG.
I chose these mainly for the directional sound characteristics that only an open back headphone can deliver and holy shit, boy does it deliver! Directional accuracy seems to be 2 to 3 times better than the cheap set. That sound stage....
Very happy so far. Although the lack of an in line volume & mic mute is a step backwards and the 1m cable is a joke but there 2 very minor things in the overall scheme...

You could pick up a 3.5mm extension cable pretty cheaply if the cable is too short.
