Not in this article but by the other recent news/rumours the 5070ti is actually looking really good while the 5080 is looking like a turd. To play devil's advocate though the gddr7 3gb modules aren't available yet otherwise I suspect the 5080 would have them from launch. There isn't a lot separating the 80 from the 70ti and if it can only support 8 memory modules and it's 8x2gb then obviously a future 5080ti/super will have 8x3gb for 24gb of vram. However the 5080 is rumoured to be 203-400 and NVIDIA only go from 100 to 400 (I think?) there isn't a lot of room to improve the 5080 besides vram and an overclock in the future. The 5080 will still be priced like an 80 and anybody interested in that tier should seriously consider the 203-300 5070ti instead.

This is also likely a very deliberate 5090 upsell that I'll be admittedly falling for as for the first time I want to spoil myself with something dumb after what has been a really shit couple years personally. Besides the 1080ti it will be the first absolute flagship I've ever owned.

Looks like it might be one of these typical refreshes where they don't bump up hardware specs too much, but implement some new features ready for their next architecture change, which of course means "AI"

This is sounding likely so far as apparently besides the 5090 the generational gains will be smaller and that's coming with a TDP bump. The usually reliable sources are saying that the biggest gains are in RT and PT but in terms of pure raster the 5080 is only looking on par to maybe 5-10% improvment over the 4090.

There were lots of murmurs that the 50 series were meant to launch Q4 this year and I wonder if they were delayed to next year due to hope that Micron would have 3gb GDDR7 modules ready. The 5080 just doesn't look right after you look at the 5070ti which is on the same class GPU.
 
Just watched some stuff (read: speculation) on the neural rendering stuff. While it might be introduced now it will probably need at least a gen or two of graphics cards to be usable like ray tracing was after Turing (2000). Though one thing that we can't deny NVIDIA of despite often being painted the villain is their constant innovation despite having almost a monopoly. Blackwell has waiting lists for business users of over 12 months and they're still not only developing and passing the technologies down to consumers but also allocating fab capacity to even produce the cards when I'm sure they'd prefer to make more stuff for corporate and business where they actually make money (and probably why their consumer cards are so expensive so they can at least make it worthwhile to allocate capacity on).

do you blokes have any recommendations for mobo to pair with 9800x3d and likely a 5080? I want at least 2x m.2 ssd's, no plan for third at first at least. will have 2x32gb ram for my orchestral vst's. I don't really need to go too crazy with USB ports, most of the time only have a USB switcher plugged in and maybe 1 or 2 other things

I've just picked up a x870e Asrock Taichi and along with the x870e Taichi Lite and Nova they're the only boards where you can utilise all the M2 slots at full speed. The compromise is a couple less USB slots than the others and also rocks 2 USB 2.0. ASRock boards are hard to get at the moment though as I think only Scorptec and Centre Com are the only Aussie retailers carrying them and you will need to order due to their popularity.

Then Gigabyte x870e boards for example rock heaps of USB and PCIe slots but at the expense of sharing lanes with the M2 drives so stay away from them in your use case. x870e offer the most options due to the dual chipset but if you want to look at something like the x870 (no -e) MSI Tomahawk you can get 2 4x PCIe4.0 M2 drives or use the third M2 slot at 4x if you disable the rear USB 4.0 slots in BIOS as they lane share. For the price of the Tomahawk though you would be better trying to get your hands on a x870e ASRock Nova. B850 motherboards should be releasing soon but you'll be facing the same lane compromises as the x870 boards. x870e is stupidly priced though. You might be able to get some old x670 stock which will offer the same features as the x870e at better prices but the reason I decided to go the x870e myself even though pairing with a 7800x3d is due to better memory support and since it will be supported for one more generation it will likely have better support for next gen Ryzen than the 600 chipset (as in AGESA support and stuff).


edit: I should add that the Taichi and Taichi Lite are E-ATX boards so would need to make sure your case supports that form factor. Otherwise the Nova. Scorptec at the current time of writing have the Nova with an ETA meaning you can order unlike they're Sold Out stuff where you can't even add to cart. The Nova is arguably the best x870e board and it's also the cheapest. I ordered the Taichi when it was ETA and they didn't get it until a few days after the date but if you're waiting for RTX50 like me then you're in no rush to pick it up either.

thanks for the info. was looking at those ASRock ones earlier and they did seem pretty good value. I'm happy to wait I've already waited many years haha so preorder is fine with me. might grab that nova board after a bit more pondering..

Scorptec are saying ETA 7/1 but even if that's loose it will still likely come in no more than a week later. I'd have ordered the Nova myself but after deciding on ASRock I just committed to the first I could order between Taichi or Nova given their popularity. To get anything comparible you're looking at $900-1000+ and even then if M2 storage is your consideration they don't even suit your use case anyway. I think when I ordered the Taichi it had an ETA of the 17th but it ended up coming in on the 20th. When I was getting something else from Scorptec the week before the bloke told me the boards were popular and they're getting a steady stream of supply but not very many units at a time. Not to act like a salesman but it's better to get the order in now if you've got the cash available because there will likely be a rush once RTX 50 releases and others are holding off until then to buy their new parts. That was my justification for buying the 7800x3d for only $580 when I did as Ryzen 9000 launched and it was probably one of the smartest PC decisions I have ever made.
 
I wonder if this will mean next gen AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards will be released in the US before the rest of the world? They'll probably want to stockpile as much as they can and they know they're guaranteed to sell all of them as everyone there will want to get them now before the tariffs.

This is how I've been somewhat certain (and a little hopeful) that prices for NVIDIA will be roughly the same for us. If they increase MSRP to over the 40 series then with the tariffs they will be completely unaffordable for the US market and simply won't sell. Thankfully for us that remains around the same price.

I had another question...I was thinking about this RAM: CMH64GX5M2B6000C30

firstly anything wrong with that choice?

also on the QVL for the nova it doesn't have it but it has a very similar one CMH64GX5M2B6000Z40 just has Z40 at the end instead of the cl30 model. Would that matter?

tbh I've never actually bought RAM that's on the QVL for any PC I've built but for this one I wanna make sure I can get the absolute most out of it

I've also shopped at PCCG and PLE as well as the odd store here and there if I was desperate for something that was out of stock elsewhere so I'd hate to see my total PC history for the last 15 years.

QVL lists aren't always definitive. The RAM I bought isn't on the x870e Taichi QVL (ASRock don't look like they have as extensive lists anyway) but as I bought G.Skill they had an updated QVL on their own site that listed the new ASRock boards. Corsair unfortunately don't look like they offer the same resource. The only difference I can see between those RAM kits though is the Z40 is listed for AMD Expo (probably why it's on the QVL for an AM5 board) and C30 is for the Intel XMP profile. RAM overclocking is almost uniform between Intel and AMD and from my experience of other PC communities over the years there is far greater XMP profile support for AMD motherboards than there is for Expo profiles on Intel. So that's up to you if you want to hang on to that memory kit that will more than likely have a compatible profile out of the box or exchange it for a kit that specifically states Expo or is on a QVL.

Edit: derp. I just read again and you didn't buy it yet but I'll leave the text in for the same consideration.

cheers. I've had more of a look around and there's a couple same spec kits for similar price I could go with that are on the list so maybe I just pick one of those for peace of mind 😄
 
Pricing leaks have been coming out for a while but given the sources and how close we are (some channels are getting hit with strikes which lends even more credibility) these might be legitimate.

5080 - $1370USD/¥9999CNY - $2200AUD
5090 - $2600USD/¥18999CNY - $4190AUD

That's MSRP originally from CNY so I think includes tax unlike when prices are announced in USD. It lines up with the original leaks in USD minus tax too. Once you account for AIB prices I think we'll be looking at around $2500 and $4500 for the 5080 and 5090 respectively.

I've got no issue with the cash for the 5090 but I'm definitely questioning if it's irresponsible or not. NVIDIA are extremely out of touch now. Either come out and state if the 90 class is even a consumer card anymore or rebrand it away from GeForce if it's not and for the prosumer instead. For the 80 I'm not as concerned as the rest of the internet for being a 16gb card again as that's actually a physical limitation given the GB203 GPU has room for eight memory modules and only 2gb GDDR7 is available at the moment. I'm more concerned on how many less SMs and CUDA cores it has vs the 90 compared to previous generations. If generational uplift has it around 20% over the 4090 I think I'll just shoot for that and re-asses later once the 5080 Super and/or TI are released should VRAM be an issue. IMO 5080ti will be a cut down 5090 on the GB202 and will be simply a better class of card while 80 Super will just be the same 5080 with more memory and a slight OC. However if the 5080 comes in underwhelming (0-5% of the 4090) but the 5090 is truly a beast then I might just torch my cash after all.

I guess it could be worse. You could be from the States and will have to soon chuck 60% more on top
