Are AMD sticking to what they said and exiting the high end GPU market? I feel like there is a huge market for high end cards that NVIDIA aren't capitalising on and I get the feeling that if AMD put out a competitive product they have a chance to take a bit of the NVIDIA user base.

I don't know if I read or remember wrong, but I thought AMD were only temporarily pulling out of the high end race as they develop their new design and only said what they did about only servicing the mid range as that's where most gamers are as kind of a way to save face. The 9070xt is so close. In raw performance it even trades blows with the 5080 in some games. AMD don't necessarily have to threaten the 90 class but if NVIDIA's generational gains slow (though if 6000 is on the 3N node then expect a decent uplift) then it's not unreasonable to hope that AMD could release something in between the 6080 and 6090 making it really awkward for NVIDIA. The other thing is DLSS and RT is worth the price of entry on NVIDIA's high end cards but FSR is getting better.

You might be right. I took it as them leaving permanently.

From memory the reporting and statements were all "Nvidia is going to AI land, and we need market share so, big middle it is" and never an actual exit from things.

So I'm the kinda person that likes installing updates as soon as they become available. Windows updates, graphics card driver updates etc. When I turn on my PC just without even thinking I go through and click the check for updates button in whatever program I'm running if they don't update automatically when I open them. Just muscle memory shit. Has only caused the occasional issue with a buggy update.

Anyway, there's a BIOS update out for my motherboard. Downloaded the file, but I'm too scared to install it. With my old PC, there was a Windows program you could run to update the BIOS. New one, you have to format a USB drive in FAT32, extract the file to it, then insert it in a particular USB slot, reboot to the BIOS and install it from there. Like it's not overly complicated for someone that's been using PCs since before Windows 95, but still. Why has it gotten more complicated in the last 10 years when they're both quite-good-for-the-time Gigabyte motherboards?

I'm sure I'll get around to it at some point, but man. Do not want to brick an expensive piece of hardware because of my need to have latest updates installed :straining:

The issue is that the demand for AI hardware is virtually insatiable at the moment and therefore extremely lucrative, both NVIDIA and AMD are likely to chase the cash, which means limited supply and high prices for GPUs. It sucks!

Technically have started the pursuit of a new pc, I've been using a BENQ 21.5" monitor since 2010 (and it's actually from 2009) - thus while I've been using it on my older pc and even have recently hooked up my laptops to it.... I couldn't alleviate the screen tearing issue (even with all of the settings available + internet advice), 60HZ was mostly fine but still not perfect.

I wasn't specifically looking for one but was keeping an open mind about it. I pretty much knew that I did want to go for a bigger size but not bigger than 27" (I've rigged up my pc and laptops etc to 32", 55" and 65" tv's.... it's fun but it's TOO big to sit in front of imo). I wanted a bigger hz range (more than 100, but not crazy). However I wanted to stay away from QHD/QLED displays - with the way my eyesight is I want to avoid eyestrain and bloodshot eyes from piercing brightness displays etc etc. Thus I was only targeting FHD.

I had done a few walkthroughs of some places where they had monitors turned on and I could compare size + the colour/brightness/saturation levels. Still had plenty of options to wade through, jump forward to randomly flicking through JB Hifi's catalog and a select few caught my eye.

Anywayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy I've now got a 24" (technically 23.8") Asus VG249Q3R. I settled for that based on being comfortable wth the IPS displays on the 3 ASUS laptops that I use regularly. And from mucking around with the settings, I feel I've made a good decision for myself (much better than taking one home, having to bring it back due to eye discomfort etc etc etc).

It has built in speakers which are not that great to be honest, but pretty nifty if I want sound.... but don't want to blow out my ear drums with the Logitech speakers I own haha.

** It's not really worth posting about as I know it's pretty much a low frills purchase and not cutting edge technology, but it works for me soooooo :p

I get a new one every 3 years and try to get the best spec possible . The tech moves so quickly it wont be long before this one is outdated.

Generally happens an hour after purchase :p

I'd like my next pc to be able to last a while my last pc technically did (2x video card upgrades, and a ram upgrade + several hdd changes.... but the CPU itself stayed the same over 13 years... granted I've barely used it the last few).

What’s everyone’s thoughts on the new Intel chips? I’ve heard mixed reports one being that they’ve taken a backwards step in the gaming dept.

Intel's latest flagship, the 285k, is only marginally better than the previous 14900k and is around $150 more than AMD's 9800x3d which is significantly better than the 285k and is also more power efficient. There are some OK value Intel chips in the lower to mid range but AMD is just the default option now at the moment.

I'll play these latest purchases, I promise!

I actually just bought some DLC for games I haven't played in a while in the current sale. I re-installed the games and don't actually feel like playing them lol.
It's comforting to know they're there...

My 7800x3d had been idling at low 60s the last couple weeks. For a little while I excused it as maybe Windows updating in the background and not long ago NZXT also updated the way CAM reports CPU temps. HWinfo reported the same so I thought it was worth taking a look. In task manager MS Edge was hogging 15-20% of total CPU usage which I thought was strange because I use Chrome. Then I realised I sometimes use the built in Edge browser from the Windows game overlay and without even a game open I hit win+G and saw the browser had 6 tabs. Closed them, Edge dropped off Task Manager and temperature dropped back to low 40s. That's nuts and Chrome is the one that gets a bad name...

May or may not have pulled the trigger on a SFF build in the last 24 hours

gpu is up in the air at this point. Intention is to either go bare bones until I make up my mind on a current gpu or test the waters and see if my old and unused 2080ti squeezes in for the time being.
