SHE'S HERE!!!

I can't thank you all enough for your advice on this one. My first ever gaming PC. Plenty to build on here including M/K hah.

I think the PC will go under the desk once my wife gets home and decides she wants it under there but there's plenty of space and floorboards so shouldn't get too much dust.

Once again a sincere thanks to a whole bunch of you guys for stepping in and walking me through the process.

Well done man! Looks purdy. Played anything yet?

Any thoughts on this? $300 bucks off through Samsung?

Great monitor. It's an updated version of my Alienware 34" OLED (panel also made by Samsung) and it has been my favourite expensive purchase in a long time. Real HDR looks so good and that's a tidy refresh rate.

I can't see the Gsync compatible on there but I'm assuming it is (my Neo Odyssey G7 doesn't say it and it works). For comparison sake have you seen what Alienware (Dell) are selling their 34" OLED for at the moment? I think it's the AW3423DWF (I have the earlier 23DW Gsync Ultimate model) as it should be the same panel.

Yeah I just watched a Hardware Onboxed video and saw its not recommended for anything outside gaming due to burn in. I work from home 2 days as a week so it would be the new primary monitor for both, while my AOC 34" VA would be secondary in portrait. (Above reason for me deleting the original post lol) HO mentioned it's Gsync compatible thankfully.

Wondering whether an IPS would be the go or stick with AOC till it kicks the bucket. (Surprised I've had it for 3 years which is like 90 in PC gaming years yeah? Lol)

I don't know about the G8 but the Alienware has a pixel shift where periodically the entire display shifts by a pixel. I remember when I first got it I found it very noticable but now I don't notice it at all. That's how Dell are able to have a 3 year burn in guarantee. I know HUB demonstrated some slight uneveness (or burn in) after prolonged use (I think Tim admitted he always used it in split screen so he had a clear line down the middle) so yeah it might not be the best for long term productivity. The benefits of OLED are IMO only for gaming and content consumption anyway. For work and productivity it's pretty still best to stick with a good quality IPS or VA.

Yeah I try to respect a deleted post and delete mine if I reply to one. Wasn't sure what you were doing there lol.

Yeah I thought, bugger better not get OLED lol.

It's not primarily productivity, probably 60 gaming 40 productivity split.

Just worried about the burn in. Love my AOC but miss the IPS that I passed onto the missus.

After 34" ultrawide, don't think I can go back to anything else haha. Just narrows the pool of monitors unfortunately.

EDIT: looking at 32:9 monitors now. I have a problem lol

Have you considered 32" 4K? Obviously much harder to drive for gaming but for any work or productivity you get actually get a bit more horizontal real estate than a 3440 ultrawide and obviously more vertical.

After going ultrawide I couldn't go back either but now after owning the 32" 4K Neo G7 for a bit I'm going to swap my OLED ultrawide for one of the new 4K OLEDs when they release next year.

Are you sure about more horizontal real estate?

Last I checked 3840 > 3440 ;)

I'm clueless haha, what models should I be looking at?

EDIT: I think its my poor interpretation of 'real estate'. My use case is for work. I have a million windows open of different software types.

Having more real estate is contingent on how you're scaling everything too isn't it?

Pick which ever one suits your use case. Personally I'm not a fan of 21:9 (I have one at work), 32:9 would be nice but driving games becomes an issue on anything other than top end GPUs. Running games on a 21:9 might be ok, but for now I'm using 2x 1440p 27" monitors.

Also.... probably the easiest way to demonstrate "real estate", scaling certainly changes things

What dav said and that image is actually a good example of how big 4K really is. It's an extra 400 pixels and as you can see you've got more space. That's at 100% scaling though and for some people they have to scale up 4K at 32" to reduce strain. I don't work on mine so I can't vouch much for that. Coming from ultrawide it's hard to get your head around at first so I'll take some photo comparisons later of mine to show you. Physically the panel sizes of 32" 16:9 compared to 34" 21:9 isn't a whole lot different either.

If you're budget is what you were looking to spend on the 34" OLED then you could get just about anything. My Neo Odyssey G7 is a VA but there are some brilliant LG IPS panels around the same price.

Just something else for you to consider as well lol.

I getcha, god bless you fellas by the way.

40th coming up and it's the only thing I reckon I'd like to get at the moment.

Info is a big help and widens up pool of monitors to consider.

Try to find some places with different size monitors on display to see what works for you.

Since I have both sitting around the office.....

EDIT: hmmmmmmmmm that 32" 4K is actually spare, wonder if I can drive a 4k and 1440p off this laptop....... :)

EDIT 2: yep, it can :D the DPI doesn't match any more but I'm sure I can live with it.

Silly question. Can someone tell me what this means when I'm showing two GPUs in AMD?

In BG3 I can select which one should be used... in Farm Sim, I cannot (I don't think)

BUT

The question more is, why the heck are two listed and what can I do about it?

Your CPU seems to have integrated graphics (the "AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics"), you should be using the 6750XT

Ah. I see. Would it be in the game settings to tell it which card to use?

BG3 runs smooth on high because the game can detect which GPU to use.

Farm sim 22 runs like dogshit on high becuase I can't work out how to change the card.

Edit:

Reckon this is probably it. Just waiting on an update and will test

Yeah I reckon that should do it, also just to confirm.......... your monitor is plugged into your GPU and not your motherboard, right?

Well just you listen here.. it sure bloody was... n't

I didnt even know that was a thing. hahah
It's caught plenty of people out before, figured I'd ask and potentially save you some future pain :)

Hopefully setting the default sorts it out, disabling the iGPU is another option but it's a handy bit of redundancy if shit hits the fan.

Happens all the time mate. We all do stupid things, even the experienced people.

I moved house last year and in the process had my computer unplugged for a few weeks. When I set it up I had no picture and the RGB on my RAM was red. I thought I had a serious problem. After an hour of trouble shooting I realised I didn't turn the monitor on, and because the system was unplugged for a while it reset some settings which included defaulting the RGB to red.... 😒

Ry009 here is a 34" 3440*1440 and 32" 4K side by side. You've got dav's a few posts up for more reference too. Both are curved so it was hard to get an orthographic perspective but it might help you get an idea.

First see Steam on the ultrawide

Now see how much room that takes on the 4K. I didn't resize it, only dragged it over. If you're starting to consider 32" 4K I do recommend going to see one in person first if you're planning on doing work on it. If you think you might need to increase the scale then it might defeat the purpose and you may as well stick to looking at 3440*1440 for your use case.

Side by side. The ultrawide is definitely a bit wider, but 32" 16:9 is still pretty big.

Yep, I've been messing with PCs for about 30 years, almost 25 of that professionally, and there are still plenty of times I waste an hour or two on something before realising I f*cked up something simple.
