I thought I would start a thread for us all to post general computing Tips/Advice... so to get the ball rolling:

TOPIC: PC passwords and security.

PROBLEM: Cyber crime is ever increasing and many average users are simply overwhelmed by what they need to do to proctect themselves. The standard means of protection is user authentication via "User Name" and "Password". However, with people using more online services and each requiring their own UserName/Password, it is becoming quite a chore to remember all those UserNames/Passwords... and it is dangerous to use the same combination for multiple things.

SOLUTION: Some time ago the standard was never write your PIN/Password down so people can read it and gain access to you vital information. Time have changed. Criminals are now much more likely to gain access to your information via online methods: ie Viruses, Key Loggers etc or by simple "brute force" against weak passwords... than they are via physical means (ie breaking into your house). To keep your online details as safe as possible... keep a written hard copy of your UserNames/Passwords (secret questions if needed) at home. Change them often (say every 1-2 months). Keep them complicated using letters, numbers and special characters where you can.

Result is you can easily keep a list of complicated passwords that change often without feeling the pressure to remember them. Yes, there is a risk that someone who physically reads these passwords can access your information... but that risk is significantly lower than that of the online risk... plus common burglers are unlikely to steal "password" lists and you will probably know anyone else accessing that physical "password" list.

SUMMARY Keep a physical password list.

Great idea for a thread! I was thinking of starting one, but I think this will be the best place for it.

I'm currently using a iPhone 3G and was looking to upgrade. I've thought about getting the iPhone 4, but like the look of trying the blackberry 9800 torch. I've never used a blackberry but hear that they are pretty good.

Has anyone got any comments about the whole blackberry V iPhone debate?

I dont really play many games or anything on the iPhone, I mainly use it for the music, a few apps like the weather but mainly I use it as a phone and use the email and web features.

For those who havent looked at the 9800 torch, here is a link http://au.blackberry.com/devices/bl...X_PK=rim|51fd4635-51b9-54a8-c2ae-000073620089

Any constructive feedback would be appreciated, cheers

the above is a minefield, they're all different and features you want are a really personal thing.

also

you seem to be discounting 2 phone OS's that would probably be worth your time.

Android and Windows

one of each below

the Samsung Galaxy S http://www.samsung.com/au/smartphone/galaxys/ (android) the android marketplace is massive

or the HTC 7 Mozart http://www.htc.com/www/product/7mozart/overview.html heavily integrated with MS desktop and server apps.

have fun

Thanks for the reply seanoff :)

You're right, I had discounted the Android and the Windows phones. I'm not sure why I did, but I'm open to suggestions. I guess it was a branding reason why I only considered the Blackberry or the iPhone 4 so I havent put any time into the others.

Now that the smart phone debate is open, any other opinions? Anyone recommend one of these that they use?

if you're going down the android route, i think HTC make the best devices. Sense is probably the best skin out there for android. if you're looking to buy outright, import from overseas as it is much cheaper than buying from a local store. pretty soon the next generation of devices that have the Tegra 2 processors (dual core) will hip the shelves in europe and the US.

currently the top of the line phones are the HTC Desire HD and Samsung Galaxy S. I use the HTC desire and its still a top of the line phone.

Thanks prankmonkey.

I do plan to buy them outright, Im looking at buying 2 of them. I can buy two 9800 torch's on the net for about $1500 ish.

You guys have put in a compelling argument for the android phones though, but I am still slightly in favour of getting the blackberry. If you were to rate them in a top 3, how would you all rate them?

I have read plenty of places where the iPhone 4 kills everyone, but on many others, they dont rate a mention. It's hard to decide, but I doubt I'll end up with another iPhone

remember if you're importing them, make them on separate orders, you'll pay more in shipping, but you wont pay GST on them as the value is under 1000.

as for what to get, its all about personal preference.
personally i dont like the apple ecosystem where they control every single part of the experience and dont let you do much with the interface. also i despise itunes as a program.

On my desire i've changed the keyboard and default sms program. you can also change the skin of the OS to what is your preference. another thing you might consider is if you want a hardware keyboard or a pure touchscreen device. BB's are excellent for keyboard based phones, i havent heard raving reviews of their touchscreen devices though. For hardware keys for android, try the milestone 2 or the htc desire z, both are import only though.

and think about the apps as well, BB store doesnt have a lot of apps, the apple store has heaps with a lot of polish, while the android market has many apps which many say arent as polished, but there are some extremely power apps that let you do things that other phones wont/cant let you do.

ok i need a bit of advice on android toucsreen phones, i generally have found that using the touchscreen keypad was vertually impossible for myself due to hand shakes and a massively fat thumb. :)

ok now ive used swype on the galaxy without a problem, is this ltd to the galaxy or can i download it as an app for other android phones.

thanks for the help.

there are ways to acquire the apk for swype and other similar keyboards (i use shapewriter myself). i think xda forums is the best place to look

I've got a problem on my computer I thought some of you would be able to help me with.

Recently I moved all my music folders to the one spot to keep things a bit more organised and as a result Itunes can't locate any of it so I've been adding it one song at a time.

Surely there's a quicker way/shortcut so I can add my entire music list at the same time?

What OS are you using?

Shouldn't you be able to change the designated music folder where iTunes looks in iTunes. I swear I have done it before, but I may have just deleted the whole library and just imported again.

Go into preferences, then Advanced I think (last tab) and then change the location of the iTunes music folder to where you have moved your music.

desire HD is probably up there with the Galaxy S as the best androids available atm. but if you arent desperate and dont need a phone now, there will be a whole lot of dual core phones coming out very soon, like the LG optimus 2x which will be the first in a long line coming out in the next few weeks.
