Not sure you need four defensive forwards who don't kick goals, if you have people in your forwardline who can score goals. Ross has gone back to a purely defensive forward line because very few in the team can kick goals. Balla, Mayne, Deboer and Barlow. Pav has been swamped again and isn't in great form. Duffy can help with that. I also disagree that he had no tackles. He had one right in front of me.
I think it's more to protect our defence which is obviously undermanned. We can't afford to allow teams to easily bounce out of our forward line otherwise we'd get killed at the other end.

If we get the luxury of having somewhere near our best back 6 on the park at the one time this year, we'll see a more attacking forward line.

Pretty sure we put Fyfe forward to kick goals not put on more forward pressure.
Hard to see how playing Barlow more forward could possibly help stop run out of our forward line.

Hard to run the ball out of the forward line if Barlow is slotting them through the middle. He's got his goal kicking down pat at the moment. Wouldn't be the worst option.

So has Ross gone to a fully defensive forward line or not? One minute you state that he is by playing Barlow down there and now you're saying Barlow isn't any good defensively???

Of course we need to kick goals too, which btw we have been and more than the opposition on nearly all occasions this year. Fyfe is a scoring weapon up forward but he's also a good defender once it hits the ground and it also puts the opposition coaching panel in a more defensive mindset.

That's pretty much the argument. would you need a forwardline full of defensive forwards and rising if more of the guys up there were goal kickers? Chances are Duffy would make a better forward than Barlow. Would like to have a decent look.

He isn't quick enough to stop run out of our forward line. Ross has got Balla doing it for him.

Nathan Williamson. AFL umpire no 41.
I was abused by some other posters at the Peel game for being related to him. I told them that sane surnames don't always mean same bloodline. They moved on to teasing me about something else that I will address in my next post.

Duffy kicked a number of good goals and was the most damaging forward for Peel. He was very influential. All the old blokes who I sat with had a go at me for thinking get is worth another look. They think he's not up to scratch however his selfishness in front of goals can hurt the opposition with just a handful of possessions.

I would like to find out if he is up to scratch. Walters was terrible when he played for SD after he was banished, to the point where he was put in the backline just so he could get a kick. He was totally different when he played for Freo. Duffy's kicking on the snap and his set shots generally have improved. He can be a bit erratic but he is very very damaging on his day. I have watched him live twice this year and his performances have been exceptional. I can't see what we could possibly lose by giving him a a month or so to show what he has. Its not as though our other options are anything to get excited by and we desperately need his pace.

plus he was very good in his two opportunities for Freo.

I'm with ya but.... Walters wasn't shocking fir SD towards the end of his banishment he dominated up front.

I really wanted to see more of Duffy towards the end of last season. He was given to sub games and very little game time to make an impression. Freo don't know what they have until they give him a go. If he doesn't perform then move him on if he does then if fer a new contract.

He might be a bit scary in the dew but he wouldn't be alone there. Hard to know until we try. Have you seen him in the wet for Peel?

His first game he was very good, kicked a couple and gave off another. Great sub.

Could well be right. We know that Barlow can win the ball, tackle, take a decent mark and also kick a good goal. Duffy could be better at being a genuine forward, maybe. He is more than likely worse at winning ball, rotating through the middle and tackling though. Selection panel would need to look at all of this stuff and a more rounded, proven player probably gets the nod right or wrong.

Seems counter-intuitive that the less goals our team is scoring, the less genuine forwards we put in the team. It is the old chicken and egg story. We are the chickens and Hawthorn are the eggs. It's an interesting argument.

End of the day, peoples jobs and livelihoods are on the line. It might seem like a great idea to put a relatively untried goal sneak into the team when there are no consequences. For the people paid to make those calls, they'll look like a genius if it works, but, will be out on their arse pretty quick it it doesnt.

This setup isn't conducive to exciting footy but I can see why theyake the calls they do. Especially in a team that's first on the ladder currently.

Yeah. If we started losing we would probably go mental. But he is a mature aged player, who Ross was very bullish about early in the season. He has lost his nerve the more successful we have become. I can understand why but the question still remains, will the team as it stands be successful at finals time. As a lay watcher, we seem incredibly reliant on a handful of players to get most of it done and our forward line against Richmond wasn't high scoring enough to get us back into the game when we got jumped.
Sometimes it seems we are mixing up a plate of pasta and hoping it will turn into caviar.

Sorry, didn't read in sequence, then saw your match report. Nice report and pretty much as I saw it too.

Bloody cold down there!
I had the sun shining straight into my face, so I was fine. Jacket at about 3/4 time. Great game to watch.
Dare I say "great minds" and all that....
