Somewhere.
Other Teams
Sturt
The team that the other 8 WAFL clubs are trying to throw out are sitting in the 4. Be interesting to see them try it if the Thunder manage to stay there.

Why are the other 8 clubs trying to kill them off? A club is needed in the Mandurah area as much as one is needed in the Midland area.

The reason I think? Fear. There's no doubt that the Thunder have the potential to become a stong club. In the SANFL it took around 10 years for Central District (entered the league in 1964) to become a force and until then they were cellar dwellers like Peel have been in their first 4 years in the league.

The main excuse that the 8 clubs have for getting rid of the Thunder is the bye and their onfield performances, being recent wooden spooners.

The SANFL has had a bye for 10 years now. Although the preference is for 8 teams, people deal with the bye and there is no screaming for anyones heads. Although if there was the same reasoning for removing a club in SA, I think the most recent wooden spooner should get the chop.

If only.

I reckon North would give them some competition in that regard - they're fairly well rooted at the moment

i dont think Peel have really had a chance to establish themselves yet... and i agree that the Mandurah area does need a team

the only other team i can see getting the axe would be Swan Districts, because of their financial situation....

The bye is hurting the other 8 clubs financially and secretly they may see Peel as a bit of a threat to them a few years down the track. Already they have tasted some success this season, they have a great coach and a good squad developing.

But I can't see them surviving past 2001 - I wish they can stick around, but if the 8 club presidents get their way, what can Peel do?

Swans are threatend because Peel have better finances. But realistically the Midland area needs a team as much as Mandurah.

The bye hasn't caused any hardship in the SANFL. I feel that the way it has been managed in the WAFL draw is more the problem. Didn't Subi have a bye, then a game followed by a bye?

AFAIK the bye in the SANFL will soon (2002?)be a thing of the past with the NT team set to join (fingers crossed). Maybe the WAFL can include a Midland team as well and thus have 10 teams.

BTW, Perth actually has a bigger population and growth rate than Adelaide, so a 10 team league would seem to be more than justified.

And looking at the results, Peel is very competitive this year.

Swan Districts ARE based in the Midland area. I was referring to the fact that they need to survive as much as Peel do.

As the NT experiment in the SANFL. It seems to be more of a pipe dream. It was talked about for this season, are there any more developements?

Personally I don't think it will work. The Darwin league play their games at a different time of the year.

This might seem a crazy idea, but instead of the WAFC dropping Peel Thunder, is there any chance that they could add another team in time for the 2002 season, making it a 10 team league and dropping the 'bye'.

I know there are some popular regional leagues up north and down south which could easily make up a team for colts, reserves and league - it would just be quite difficult if teams had to travel a few hours to get to the game. Kalgoorlie/Goldfields also springs to mind with this idea.

Oops sorry. You can tell I'm no WA geography buff

Re: NT team the www.sanfl.com.au site had a report saying it was postponed till next year. It was supposed to start this year.

Sounds like a very reasonable one to me (without knowing the facts on the ground very intimately at all). I am just basing my conlcusion on Perth's and WA's size and very rapid growth. SA's demographically very stagnant and they still cover 9 teams (+ 1 NT?) adequately. So WA should be able to do even more.

About 10 years ago there was talk of bringing in Kalgoorlie-Boulder & Bunbury into the competition. It was all ready to go but the commision and the 8 clubs decided against it.

As a swannies supporter the last thing I want to do is see swans go under, realistically a merger with Perth wouldn't be a good idea as Perth services Kelmscott and Armadale etc.

THe ideal merger would be between Subiaco and Claremont, Subi have to leave their oval and have no supporters but lots of money while claremont also have no supporters and have no money but have an oval.
