Although I rate Maradona as a player, possibly better than Pele......Pele is

- Most successful player from late 50's - mid 70's
- An icon for world sportsmanship
- An ambassador for the game

Maradona was an amazing talent, but he also was
- Drug Cheat
- Not a role Model

i've also heard the argument (pro-maradonna), that pele never played in europe.. maradonna did, and dominated... brought a lowly club to the very top for a couple of years.. while getting hacked & attacked every single game...

soccer fanatics, your views?

and can most ppl name a soccer team Pele played for? (not talkin about the national team)... i think just the name, the four letters is readily recognisable..

This discussion is stupid. Jordan by an ice age.
You have no comprehension of what...

a) an ice age is, and...
b) what you're talking about.

If you knew what you were talking about you'd know it was a very close call. Jordan's huge in the Americanised world and indeed beyond to some extent, but Pele is well known too. It's close.

Yea, that was the argument that put Maradonna ahead of Pele on some world football ranking that was taken about a year ago I think. Im not 100% sure exactly who did it, but it was pretty official by memory.

The argument was Maradonna played in the hardest league in the world, taking a lowly Napoli to the Scudetto on more than one occasion basically single handendly. He was #1 target by opposition players as well, obviously being the standout.

Pele to my knowledge never played outside Brazil.

However, he did some unbelievable stuff for his national team, as did Diego tho.

I mean these two are pretty close in ability, and also popularity too, IMO.

Michael Jordon transcends everything - he is a walking enterprise, forget sport, this guy is just stupidly big.

As I see it, the only sportsperson who you could argue is on par with MJ is Ali.

In regards to ability, Ali wasnt the best boxer of all time, and many experts dont regard him the best heavyweight of all time.

But geezus, everyone knows about him!

Ok Starchild....ok, why dont you just sit back down.....and breathe....

Its a no CONTEST. Dont you get it. We are talking about who is more famous....a person who absolutely has no interest in sport whatsoever will still know who MJ is but probably wont know who Pele is....the reason??

Because Michael Jordan is a famous person....not a famous basketballer, he's on TV, he's on billboards, your wearing his shoes, his clothing line, his cologne, your watching the movie he starred in, your eating at his restaurant......get the point.

Michael Jordan has many nicknames, one of my favourites is "Money" he is a walking talking conglomerate!!!

It is a no contest!

Pele vs Maradona

PELE
Lets not also forget that Pele won a world cup in 1958 when he was like 17 yrs old, and even starred in the competition. He starred for years at Santos, and when he got older, at The Cosmos in USA.
Hes got an amazing goals record, an amazing games record!

Won 2 world cups - 1958 and 1970. Scored in both world cup finals 1958 vs Sweden (17 yrs old), and in 1970 against Italy

MARADONA
Was good at Boca, Napoli (led them to a Serie A Title with his own boots). Wasnt anywhere near hes best at Sevilla, and I think he also played for Barcelona.
Hes won 1 world cup...in 1986 (note he himself won that world cup for argentina, absolutely sensational)
Has been busted for Cocaine use, shooting a journalist with an air rifle. Hes coached a few 2nd or 3rd div clubs in Argentina, got sacked in all cases.
Made an absolute disgrace of himself at Italia 90, and thats when you knew, Diego would never be the same again.
Hes made 2 or 3 comebacks to Boca, but his drug addiction, and being overweight and all, he could never be back.

Diego Armando Maradona - the greatest waste of talent in any sport :(

On ability - Maradona
As an overall Footballer - Pele

The disgrace was actually made at U.S.A `94

Actually I was referring to the way he acted at Italia 90. Diving, acting arrogant

he scored a penalty in a penalty shootout against Yugoslavia and ran to the bench hugging all his coaches....and it wasnt even the match winning penalty. he acted like he was god. Thats when the crowds started to Boo him

In 1994 he tesed positive to Cocaine Abuse ater the game against Nigeria.

Argentina shouldve been stripped of there 3 pts they got against Nigeria.

May i add, even though Maradona was an idiot at Italia 90, hes pass to win the game against Brazil I think was Breathtaking! He always had talent, sadly however, he never had brains
