I was expecting Pell to get a fair whacking here but instead, he has ended up getting off too lightly.

The judge initially sounded like he was going to lay a big smackdown but he gave Pell a discount on the sentence due to his age which in my opinion is totally wrong.

3 years & 8 months non-parole period is just not enough for a sex offender who held such a high position of trust.

We're the senior graduates standing up on behalf of the younger students, or, were they r*ped too? NB. The question need not be asked, do not answer.

The reason which I did ask, was as prologue for this actual following question. I cannot understand how one person has not played out an act of revenge by responding with a murder of a criminally responsible priest in public. I only heard of some recent arsons.

I noted before about those abused still in thrall psychologically to individual priests and the church, even noted, there has been no vigilante outlier...

I was a protected witness at the Wood Royal Commission.
I am also a survivor of David O'Hearn.
The entire story of Mark Valera has not come out, but he is a friend of mine and I know it all.
He stuck O'Hearns severed head on a picket of his front fence two weeks before he took out Arkell.
I am also aware of other vigilante action taken out by survivors. Including against people of the cloth.

Yes, the age should not be relevant as he went over 20years without being sentenced, so spent his better years out of gaol.

Seems to be a fair sentence for such egregious abuses of power against the vulnerable.

For many, this will have been their first experience of hearing such a judgement. Hopefully, it will lead to the community being better-informed about the complexities and usually general fairness of this process. I'm sure this possibility was one of the reasons for its broadcast.

Yep, I'm reasonably comfortable with the sentence. I certainly didn't expect more.

The good thing is that even if his appeal gets up, Pell will have served some time for his abhorrent covering up of and support of his fellow pedo priests.

I don't get the logic that he gets a lighter sentence due to age. Seems that this is a built in mitigating factor for all pedos due to the late reporting of their crimes by the victims.

Would parole only be granted if Pell admits his crimes and enters into behavioural therapy?

You mean confess...

Would imagine that with good behaviour, Pell gets his parole. With no irresistable little boys around he should have no problems behaving himself.

In fact being cloistered with aĺl the pedos in Ararat means George will feel right at home. Heck he could even take pedo confession to make it feel more homely.

The one aspect of the sentence that I vehemently disagree with is that the judge pointed out that the maximum sentence at the time of the offences was 10-years but has since been lifted to 15-years but he would only apply the maximum sentence for the time of the offence.

Pell has had 22-years of "freedom" since the offence so in my opinion, he should have been subjected to the penalty scheme of today, not two decades ago.

If the judge had ratcheted up the sentencing by 5-years in line with the changes, then I would expect the majority of the community to accept an 11-year sentence with a non-parole period of 8-years & 8-months as fair.

The main mitigating factor was he will do the time harder than most and won't be capable of reoffending. Also his medical submission sounds like 4 or 10 years really doesn't matter he won't probably live that long.

Let him interact with the general population of the jail and he won't last past lunchtime.

It appears that Brucefrombonkingboys was just on ABC24. Almost word perfect.
