Isn't this what happens in the vast majority of rape cases? I heard something like 90% of such cases result in the defendant getting off due to a lack of evidence.

If you have one person making an accusation, and the other denying it, then one of them is lying by definition. In our "innocent until proven guilty" system, an uncorroborated allegation is generally not considered sufficient evidence to cast aside reasonable doubt.

Didn’t Pell fefuse to testify in which case he only pleaded not guilty but never denied the sexual abuse or allowed cross examination.

So it was only one persons word. The other remained silent.

imagine he is actually innocent

i dont know if he did it or not but just imagine for a second that he is innocent
Been found guilty of sex assaults on two kids and decades of hiding other pedo preists

I can’t see it...so why the **** should I give the benefit of doubt to a monster like that?

Pell would have been extremely stupid, having just been promoted, to jeopardise that with anything like this.

From what I see he would have been far more sneaky if he is indeed a pedophile. It’s hard to believe.

The crime he was convicted of where Pell coerced/forced an opportunistic rape on two choir boys after mass one sunday does not fit the pedophile profile at all ..... pedos nurture and groom their victims - pretend that its love - that's what keeps the victims quiet and the abuse goes on for months, even years. they don't usually aggravate, coerce or bully. this is more a rape.

and with absolutely no corroborating evidence after more than 20 years ... normally a dpp would never have brought it on so little.

Pell the victim

Amazing

Doubtful, he probably commands hideous fees I’d imagine. The kind of lawyer who would represent literally anyone for a buck is the impression I get.

Therefore, can anything be read into the statement,

“I’m going to pay a massive amount of munny for the best Defense lawyer Richter to defend me...”

My criminal law mates where saying nothing!! I hate Pell with every fiber of my being but Sacristies after mass are like back stage at a play - there are heaps of people about.

yes! and he was the new archbishop no less!!!!!

That said the fact that the complainant survived cross examination by Richter should give people pause

I sat through a trial back in 90s researching a tv legal series. The prosecution was going great guns until defence put accused on the stand. he had obviously been watching law n order and by the time he finished was all over red rover - impeccable jury manners.

As someone who considers himself a Catholic, my stance on this whole sordid affair is that Pell was innocent until proven guilty (as is standard if you are accused but not convicted of a crime), but now that he has been convicted by a jury of his peers beyond reasonable doubt (a very stringent standard mind you, even in cases as emotionally charged as this) I'm more than happy to have the book thrown at him (barring his conviction being overturned on appeal).

I can confirm that quite a few Catholics are opposed to his conviction, citing the arguments against said conviction (and ignoring the arguments for said conviction). Bombermania correctly noted that these Catholics perceive such a conviction as an assault on their faith, but I would go further than that and argue that they see Pell as a member of the Catholic 'family' and so by extension an attack on Pell is an attack on their family.

However, such a sense of group loyalty is very misplaced in this case and cannot be ethically or morally justified. Child abuse is a serious crime and should be stamped out in all corners of society, regardless of whether or not the abuser belongs to some perceived 'in-group'.

Unlike your views on Israel you probably got that right. He has got off numerous charges this is the last standing.

Brennan is a fairly handy legal mind
A bit of an uniformed drive-by from one of the decreasing indoctrinated;)

I wonder how the person who relied on Pell for spiritual comfort, mentoring and friendship, the Mad Monk, is feeling tonight. Things are going from bad-to-worse for Tone.

I'm a little too drunk to comment coherently, I think, but I'm going to try, slowly.
It's a mixture of complete sadness for my fellow survivors, absolute joy at someone like Pell getting convicted and disbelief at some of those here who continue to defend him.

Does anyone honestly think that the witness, whose evidence has led to this verdict, would put himself through this ordeal after hiding it in his subconscious for all of these years?
Has anyone any idea the shit that poor bastard went through in eventually testifying?
Did anyone here his public statement pleading for privacy for him and his family?
How did he, to my understanding, describe the priests 'room' down to the detail of where the wine was?
It's a bow to draw of course, but why did the other boy die of a heroin overdose and continue to deny the assaults?
Funny that, hey.
I only have one further point...
Bruce...whatever your fuqing name is.
You're a piece of shit.

Just a little more
This isn't about people who follow the Catholic doctrine, not one survivor I know hates the people who follow the church.
It's about the fuqing arseholes who let this happen, continued to let this happen, and continue to let this happen to this day.

Thank you.
Most Catholics are appalled with the Church (Especially the younger generation). Reform is needed and I believe will take place.

However, people using this to smear all Catholics (Even the ones who aren't defending Pell, like me), not the Church and the institution which should be blamed but all Catholics are not helping anyone and are using the victims of these horrible crimes to push their own agenda.

Letting Priests and Nuns marry and improving the status of Deacons would be a good place to start.

Asking them to take a vowel of celibacy is ridiculous when we are designed to love and procreate.

I was there for the prosecution closing and for the verdict. And I have been an altar boy at St Pats in the past.

This verdict won't survive an appeal. Absolutely no chance.

Hate the guy all you like, and I do understand why some do, although I don't share that view of him.

But he didn't do this, and couldn't have done it. And the jury heard at least a dozen altar boys and/or choirboys say exactly that.

Which is why it won't survive an appeal.

But Pell will go inside tomorrow. And will stay there until an appeal is decided.

This bullshit renders the rest of your hyper defensive ranting meaningless.

Every one of those witnesses were put up by the prosecution. The defence didn't put up a single witness.

But sure, the prosecution put up witnesses to say that he couldn't have done it

Agreed - celibacy is not a realistic way of life for most people.
