Surely there must've been some sort've smoking gun or heavy implication that story is 100% true. If it's just word against word pretty weird for people to believe he'd do that just after being promoted. I'd like to know what they actually had on him to convict him guilty.

One of the boys at neverland described a symbol on Michael Jacksons penis. There must be some sort've compelling evidence like that otherwise anyone could make up a story.
 
I think that those that still doubt Pell's guilt need to keep in mind that the witness evidence (in camera) was heard by the jury and cross examined by one of the best legal minds in Australia. The jury (unanimous decision) believed the victim and found Pell guilty. Pell or his advisers chose not to testify so the jury decided on the evidence before them.

None of us is privy to that evidence and unless transcripts are released, we do not know what the police alleged either.

I for one still believe he is also guilty of another crime, his silence and cover up. How many could have been saved of their trauma if Pell had spoken up?

Not convinced that is the real cause of the abuse or that removing celibacy will reduce abuse. I'm no expert on these things but the way I have heard it explained is that the perpetrators are addicted to power and their own authority. Exercising their power over the powerless is the real thrill for them moreso than just he physical gratification of having their knob sucked off. The church attracts people who value power and authority within the hierarchy more than being loved.

In modern first world society what healthy young male voluntarily signs up for a life of abstinence?

A: One who is sexually dysfunctional or one who knows his abnormal sexual urges need to be hidden irrespective of a vow of celibacy.

I think it’s that some of us think he was dumb to accost kids in such a public place.

But, given it’s true, it just shows the air of invincibility and reckless regard for others which Pell must have had, and others around him, probably knowing all about each other’s actions too.

That is sicker, that it could be so open and not something they’d worry about being outed for


The good thing is we live in a century where this catholic bullshit has little effect on the mainstream. Tomorrow there’ll be other news

Maybe some perpetrators would still commit these acts if employed in other sectors. I think the action the Church moving forward (mandatory codes of conduct for priests, training for people to spot abuse, inform the police) is positive but won’t solve the problem. Celibacy cannot eliminate sexual urges and removing this would be a good place to start. If nothing changes the Catholic Church might as well pack up shop now.

That said I won't be putting Pell to the sword until after every avenue of appeal is walked.

That is his right as an Australian citizen.

You’re not quite right.

Pedophilia is a sexuality. No different to heterosexuality or homosexuality except that the minor can’t consent.

Celibacy doesn’t cause it, but the requirement for celibacy did attract many of “odd” sexual persuasion to the Church as a means of not having to confront that issue in their life. That and it also afforded access to kids through orphanages and schools.

It’s not quite as simple as I’ve made out, but that’s a fair summary.

I think an organisation which teaches that sex is inherently sinful and shameful breeds a pool of sexually dysfunctional people. I agree on that. I just have heard it explained often that child sexual abuse is often not about sex (or a release of frustration at the lack of it), but is about exercising control or power over the victim. It is that part of it which needs to be addressed too - the abuse of power.
