Despite this being an unpopular opinion there’s a lot of good work done in the community by the catholic leity. I feel sorry for those volunteers out there who will be having crises of confidence of what their church means to them

The worst thing about Pell and his type is that they happily use/exploit these people for their own gain.

And then there were good Catholic priests doing the liberation theology in South and Central America etc.

But the institutional church is almosy always on the side of established power.

Even the current progressive Pope has some murky issues with the fascist junta in Argentina.

The flip side of that means that you are saying his accuser lied. Or is mistaken. Or.......something.

I strongly doubt that someone would put themselves through that level of stress and scrutiny if that were the case.
Or that Pell did it but the evidence available did not meet standard of proof so should get off

It was a witch hunt. And here we are.

Ironic you'd use that term given how many women were tortured to death by your bizarre Jewish death cult turned Roman imperial administrative tool in a previous bout of mass sexual violence on vulnerable members of the community.

Too often people who see power as its own end rise to the top of large organizations, and then surround themselves with others of the same worldview.

On the subject of hypocrisy I tend to wonder if Pell was secretly an atheist.

The uncomfortable reality for many today is that Pell was a giant of conservative politics in this country whose opinion was taken very seriously by those at the pointy end of the Liberal Party.

You mean pointy head end of the Liberal Party.

Gonna be hard to lobby against climate change from a prison cell.
This is Victoria, don't think he will see a prison cell.

Because Pell completely overshadowed everything else yesterday, the guy who repeatedly smashed the cops head into concrete in st Kilda the other day whilst he was prone on the ground got bail that was opposed because the cop wasn't too badly hurt! Facial reconstruction, potential brain injury and mental health issues aside.

Bolt did run with something like “the accuser was looking for a scapegoat to blame for another trauma he suffered in life.”

It’s an incredible skill to keep lowering the bar like he does.
Staggering. He's become a parody of himself.

The victim shaming is the real disgusting thing here which apparently Bolt and co are going down the route of.

A jury found Pell guilty - sure, it could be overturned on appeal, but a jury that sat through the whole case and pored through the evidence and listened to the judge's directions and defence case and cross-examination were satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that he was guilty of the sexual assault. But yes, let's blame the victim for 'making it up'.

And the institutional gaslighting going on of the victim.

Culture warriors in Australia are displaying the sort of loyalty towards Pell that you'd expect from people who think climate change is bollocks too.

Interesting that a few from the Trump thread who believe a wall is needed because all Mexicans are rapists - a claim made without evidence - are now happy to stand up for a child rapist convicted in an Australian court.

Yep, one cannot deny Pell's prowess as a politician.

Hey? There's multiple examples of opportunistic rape of minors by Catholic priests that have been exposed.
sure, but the majority involve multiple acts with multiple children - who are groomed for the purpose.
i have relatives and neighbours who's boys/girls have been victims of pedos and that's how it usually works.

Don't disagree with that but if you don't think he has his influence all over Xavier Bill, the union movement and many of the factions in the alp you would be mistaken.

Not sure what you mean? Just reporting what I saw and heard with my own eyes and ears.

I think you'll find over the next few days a number of the court reporters will say they were surprised at the verdict.

Because they were.
How can you confidently turn around and say he didn’t do this? It’s obvious that some people will go in and defend, alter boys or not, but it’s not like he has sexually abused every choir boy or alter boy going around. The evidence is pretty substantial and the CC has a sick and sordid history of abuse and corruption.

Wonder which side of the spectrum they sit on.
