I suspect it's only now occurring to Pell how much trouble he's in. I think they thought they'd argue low scale offending and off to the bail hearing, not have it so ruthlessly rejected by the judge.

The "plain Vanilla" comment is so unlike Richter - he is struggling I reckon

To the shock of ABSOLUTELY NOBODY , that mutt greg craven from the LOLstralian blames the ABC and FAIRFAX for pells conviction.
Yes I just read that. What would the Murdoch filth be without blaming the ABC for Pell's conviction.

The legal academic and vice chancellor of the Australian Catholic University, Greg Craven, blamed the police and the media, in particular the ABC journalist Louise Milligan, who wrote a Walkley-award winning book on Pell.

“This is where the Pell case has gone terribly wrong,” Craven wrote. “Impartial judge and jury [excepted], parts of the media – notably the ABC and former Fairfax journalists – have spent years attempting to ensure Pell is the most odious figure in Australia.

“They seemed to want him in the dock as an ogre, not a defendant.

“So what we have witnessed is a combined effort by much of the media, including the public broadcaster, and elements of Victoria’s law enforcement agency, to blacken the name of someone before he went to trial.”

Craven was one of 10 people to give character references for Pell before sentencing.

George Pell's defence lawyer, Robert Richter QC says that - although the cardinal maintains he is innocent - the crimes he has been found guilty of were short, not pre-meditated and no more than any other "plain vanilla case" of sexual penetration against a child.
This is the world we live in.
For **** sake can we end the church's control of the country and the freebies it gets.

At some point this arvo and evening, no matter how tight the security around him - let's hope his being on the front page of the Hun doesn't enrage Matty Johnson and/or 'Pacific Islander standover gangs" - Pell is going to hear the other prisoners screaming about what they want to do to him. And he'll be terrified. Genuinely terrified.

That's all the punishment I want, for him to be as scared as those poor little boys were in that room.

The deprivation of liberty is for the protection of society, and I am not a moron who spouts crap like "Hopefully gets locked up with Bubba hur hur hur".

He'll be in 23 hour lockdown for the next however long.

But I want him to, and he will, know true fear very soon. Just for a little bit, soon it will normalise for him, he's a strong personality, he'll rapidly develop the mental mechanisms to cope.

But at some point in the next few hours, he's going to be genuinely terrified. Good.
I am reminded of Robert Hughes entering prison and the noise prisoners were making, with one guy cracking everyone up by shouting "I'm a celebrity, get me out of here!"

I can answer. It's our job. We separate our beliefs from the evidence when doing it. And do our best to present favourable evidence in as best a light as possible, and challenge unfavourable evidence as best we can. For the most part, the guilty plead guilty. Often, the not guilty plead guilty because it's just cheaper and easier.

These types of cases are actually very rare. Where a perp insists on pleading not guilty and you believe they are, you suck it up and get on with defending them as best you can.
Wait a minute. Yesterday and today you were telling all and sundry he was innocent and that those accusers were basically liars.

Want to recant that since the latest admission by the defence lawyer?

Maintaining innocence and attacking the process would be the path for someone wanting to maintain their innocence would be my thought (as a non-lawyer though). Honestly shocked that isn't the path this is going down.

He's not allowed to go down that path at a sentencing plea hearing.

It will have no impact on the appeal.

No impact. He just said

George Pell’s defence lawyer has tried to persuade a judge that the disgraced cardinal’s sex attack on two children was at the lower end of offending because it “lasted less than six minutes”.

I think we can safely say the jig is up for the campaigner.

Let’s see Bruce defend that now that Pell and his lawyer has basically admitted his guilt...will this impact his appeal?

Use you position to rape children, hide behind the power you have, show no remorse when found guilty of rape, hopefully he'll be behind bars for years!

'No remorse': Crown wants serious jail time for Pell

George Pell is expected to be immediately jailed today after the cardinal was classified as a serious sex offender to be sentenced within the next two weeks.
Chief judge Peter Kidd said Pell's crimes were "callous, brazen offending" and indicated it would not be a lenient sentence.
Defence barrister Robert Richter QC conceded there should be jail time but argued "this is a court of law not a court of morals," as he revealed former Prime Minister John Howard was one of ten people to provide a character witness.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison indicated today he would look at stripping Pell's Order of Australia but only if an appeal is not success.
"My thoughts are with them [abuse victims] ... there is a legal process underway ... that precedent has been established in the past", Mr Morrison told reporters in Tasmania.

Chief Prosecutor Mark Gibson SC confirmed this morning the five charges on which Pell has been convicted - one of sexual penetration of a child under 16 and four of committing an indecent act with or in the presence of a child under 16 - each carry a maximum penalty of 10 years jail.
"There was an element of brutality to this assault, it was an attack. In my thinking at the moment I am not near the low end of offending," the judge said at a pre-sentence hearing on Wednesday.
Mr Gibson told the judge that "this offending warrants immediate imprisonment". Pell is expected to be taken into custody after the hearing after his lawyers withdrew a last ditch effort to appeal for bail in the Court of Appeal this afternoon.

No. Richter must proceed at a sentencing plea hearing as though Pell IS guilty of what he has been convicted of. I've dealt with this earlier.

He is not allowed to make any suggestion in that court that the court got it wrong.

He is basically obliged to deal is if it were a big hypothetical.
