My guess is that to some the belief would be that he had been defrocked
(I think the church was waiting for the appeal but happy to be corrected)

I think if the appeal fails the Church will be conducting their own process.

But as it stands, why would a man projecting innocence not dress as though he was innocent? That’s not arrogant.

And yet he claims to be innocent. You think he should submit to guilt even if he’s not guilty?
It will be interesting how much validity is given to each court hearing depending on which one held the same opinion as the outside observer.

If he's acquitted he's acquitted. To many he'll still be a loathsome kiddie fiddler though, his reputation and authority is shot whatever happens. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy imo, schadenfreude is the sweetest of emotions.

I will say this over the past few years since this whole debarkle has started there were some victims who got him to court before and found that he was acquitted.
One victim has since passed away but there was some strong evidence of him laughing about the whole thing on camera during a local news report.
Not particularly great on his behalf.
You look at the body language of the victims.
Then you look at the body language of who they are accusing.

It simply tells us that these victims are blaming the whole catholic church they attended when they were kids for this devastation that they endured.
If i were those victims i'd be putting the blame on their parents for taking them to a dodgey religion without doing the necessary research on everyone.

It's lead to Pell getting convicted along with others getting convicted.
Now there is an appeal on and the victims are victim shaming again.

Unlike many of his defenders in the church who rushed to publication the moment his fate became public, Pell’s barrister is not arguing the jury’s verdict was impossible. Nearly but not quite.

The English language was ransacked by Walker to try to capture the difference: barely possible, extremely improbable, inherently improbable, so unlikely as to make it barely possible, not realistically possible etc.

This is the approach Richter should have taken from the get go - don't go for the full throated I'M AN INNOCENT MAN AND I'M LEAVING BY THE FRONT DOOR line, but throw doubt, cloud everything.

Think the appeal may get through, lawyer was very good. Don't think the animation part will, not sure showing it would have made much difference.

Acquittal looks likely from the little I heard.

Gut feel and I am by nature a pessimist - politically the worst thing for the Church is to have an alt-right sainted martyr for Franks enemies to rally around

So far, GuruJane's Test of which appeal judge she would choose to pillow talk with after proceedings, is being won by Weinberg. Easily.

I know I have a declared "side" in this, but the more the Prosecutor relies on the non-specific memory of Monsignor Portelli as to the dates surrounding the relevant dates, as opposed to the relevant dates themselves, about which the memory was apparently more specific, the more he opens up the Complainant's own lack of specificity about the relevant dates themselves.

What I mean by that is if the Complainant had said "Pell abused me on this date" then the attack on Portelli might carry some weight. But the Complainant has switched (for perhaps understandable reasons) from early 1997 to late 1996 as the dates of offences. In a reasonable doubt scenario, if the Complainant is to be forgiven such lapses so equally must the Defendant witnesses, particularly as to matters not relevant to the Cathedral.

At this stage, I'm thinking the Prosecutors might need some sort of "Kaboom".

I could hardly be happier that Pell has appealed. Initially, he was dragged, kicking and screaming, before a County Court judge, and jury. His public reputation was forever destroyed, as a result of his own, vile actions. The press had a field day, once allowed. Chapter and verse about his inexcusable behaviour filled the front pages for weeks.

Next up comes the appeal - proceedings mounted solely at his behest. Peculiarly and unexpectedly, this gives rise to more attention being given to this thing, and his paedophilic activities. More front pages, for weeks to come. The press drools at the prospect. Who could have foreseen this outcome? Pell, possibly?

I think it highly likely that Pell will be acquitted on the current appeal, or a retrial ordered. Maybe not. It seems obvious that regardless of the outcome of the appeal, be it re-trial, conviction confirmed or acquittal, there will be almost certainly be a further appeal, from one side or the other, to the High Court. Does anyone think it likely there will be a diminution in press and public interest during such proceedings?

George Pell - the story which just keeps on giving. More fun for all. Well, maybe all but one.

No. Really. I'm not laughing. Close examination might reveal a slight smirk though.

Gee. Good to see the welfare of the survivor is foremost in your thinking.

He's been seeming a tad under-prepared to me, but am no legal eagle.

He's doing the same thing essentially that the Prosecutor did in his closing. Trying to make the improbable seem possible. But his "jury" is testing him on that and that's difficult to respond to. He's warmed up a lot from this morning. But you're only as good as the case you have.

Those watching might now be beginning to understand just how gobsmacked so many (not just supporters but reporters etc) were regarding the verdict in the context of beyond reasonable doubt.

That would, once again, be the "so many" who never saw the evidence.

Well many had, not including the Complainant. But in the context of the best case of the Prosecution being put by the Prosecutor in his closing.

I'm talking about all the shit I copped for saying everyone in the lift was gobsmacked by the verdict.
