I've seen a few people around here say that they have not rated Pendlebury's year at all and I agree that it hasn't been his very best but he has still been exceptional.

Champion data are generally very reliable with their general stats and ratings systems so here's a graph off the AFL website by champion data.

This is average impact per 100 minutes game time, Pendlebury was leading it before the clubs drastic loss of form and results and now sits a long way clear in second only just trailing Ablett. Despite players like Selwood, Fyfe and JPK having better numbers in some stats Pendlebury's overall impact is a cut above.

The fact that people have been debating whether Pendlebury deserves a spot in the AA team just shows that somewhere along the line he has become a bit underrated, not in the sense that people criticise him but just the fact that people constantly talk about other players ahead of him.

Throw in his great leadership and Captaincy this year and he has had another champion year.

Thank you Pendles for another incredible year and I hope in the near future you can become a Premiership captain, you bloody deserve it.

Not his best year in all honesty and he wouldn't be afraid to admit it. Was in and out of games and I'll be very surprised if he gets anywhere near the Brownlow. Couldn't believe they had him 2nd favorite after Ablett went down.

A good season by his lofty standards is how I'd rate it.

Yeah i thought he was fantastic, and i'm surprised by his brownlow odds. I think he is a real chance
Well he won The Age player of the year with 115 votes, second had 91. It's usually the best indication of the brownlow out of all the media awards, but Pendles has criminally under polled his whole career so it wouldn't be easy.

How do the votes work in the age?

I am pretty sure he was injured for a lot of the 2nd half of the season but still was our most consistent best player in that time. You just have to look at his his pressure act and tackle stats to see how hard he tries. His only problem is he has to give the ball to guys who turn it over every time!

Champion data are a poor judge of a players year, how'd they rate the best defenders, or rucks in the game? Not that highly I bet.

Having said that Pendles was easily, so easily it's not funny our best player this year, he carried us for a lot of the year, having to do more "grunt work" than he has in seasons past simply because the likes of Ball and Swan were missing from the middle for the most part.

You'd have to be more intimate within the inner circle to know how he's developed as a leader, but if he doesn't win the Copeland by a mile it's a joke.

Rucks are rated very highly be CD. And except for negating jobs, I think CD do an excellent job.

He really deserves a brownlow! I love that he is a leader at this great club, the standards which he works towards are second to none. Just hope the young players don't take for granted having a player like this around and just try feed off him and take their games to a higher level.

Even with key defenders and ruckman Champion data do a good job at analysing all aspects of their game, and if you compare players by position then their ratings are generally very reliable.

U'll struggle to disagree with these ratings if you are analysing the positions separately.

I worried about his ability to play at the level that he had set whilst leading the team in his first year as captain. Not all of the best players make great captains and I thought we would see a drop in his form due to him taking on the responsibility but I was wrong.

Week after week Pendles stepped up, floating forward when we lacked options, dropping back to fill holes, taking the kick in at times and still being the dominant midfielder we all know and love.

At times we can overrate our players by being so one eyed but he is a superstar and unfortunate to play in the same era as one of the greatest of all time in Ablett. Scott is by far and away the second best player in the game, with a little more support from the young boys stepping up there will be no question as to his greatness over the coming years.

He deserves a Brownlow as much as anyone in the game. Not sure if it'll come this year but it would be a travesty if he never gets the recognition he so richly deserves as a champion of this game.

I think Pendlebury will poll best on ground over Beams in nearly every game. Which game do you think Beams had more influence in than Pendlebury?
I'm not sure but I have been looking at the brownlow predictor and beams has polled more - which i found weird, I'm of the same belief as you!

Pendles only competition at Collingwood will be Beams and Sidebottom and a few cameos from Elliot and J Thomas in the GWS game. Don't underrate Beams performance throughout the year either though. He and Sidebottom really delivered and whilst I personally feel that Pendles should be top 3 for the Brownlow and a shoe in for the Copeland the other two will be right up there.

I would put money on Sidebottom polling his most ever votes in the Brownlow and Beams being right along side him.

I guess the one positive for us is that in the second half of the year when we lost it was so bloody bad that no one on the other team really stood out and it made our best players look like world beaters playing with a team of spuds.

That's only if you're Gazza... most losing teams don't get votes.
