Re: Pendles article on bigger bodies

From memory...
2011: 0-3
2010: 2-1
2009: 0-2
2008: 1-0
2007: 0-2
2006: 1-0
2005: 1-0

Last 5 yrs it is 3-8, but last 7 it is 5-8
Good news is we go better every 2nd year :)

thank you for posting that.

As evidence, Cats have Pies number minus 2010, where it was 1-1 in the home and away and 1-0 in the finals, Magpies advantage.

I've been around long enough to see the Brisbane Lions of early 2000s look like MEN next to the Magpies BOYS in the finals, and same thing with the Cats of the mid and late 2000s.... their players simply have BIGGER and HARDER bodies. The good thing for the Pies is that most of their BIG bodies are in the verge of retirement or coming to their declines.... Scarlett, Hunt, Wojcienski, Podsialy, Ottens, Mooney (retired), Kelly etc.

Their future players, Christensen, Menzel, Mackie etc are more comparable to current Pies players body sizes.... although Hawkins has potential to be Cloke-size if he decides to hit the weights more frequently.

Re: Pendles article on bigger bodies

can you post up magpies record against cats the last 5 years. Because you make it sound like pies owned them. This year alone we were 0 and 3.

I was comparing last year to this year. Not the last 5 years. If we could dominate them last year, theres no reason we shouldn't have been able to do the same this year, bigger bodies or not.

Re: Pendles article on bigger bodies

over-reaction is the favourite reaction by footy fans at this time of year...

True but I don't think Pendle's comments are an overreaction. Just acknowledging that there's work that needs to be done to ensure that there is continued improvement. I still think we improved from last year, just was a problem that Geelong improved more with their seniors players getting back to their best, rather than declining as most people thought they would.

Re: Pendles article on bigger bodies

We got smashed around stoppages and in the center..

We need another BIG midfielder to go with Swan Pendlebury and Ball.

Wellingham could do with getting bigger and becoming this player!

This so much it's not funny.

Same with the Hawthorn game and a few other games during the year.

At one point we were relying on ball and pendlebury so much to win the ball it was like we were Carlolton with Judd the only player winning a hard ball.

We need the beams/sidebottom etc to learn to win their own ball.. We already have didak who can't win a ball to save his life - too late to teach him we need to teach these young kids that that is what is ultimately most important when finals comes along.

Re: Pendles article on bigger bodies

The reason why collingwood lost is that they dont have as skillfull players as geelong and are not as hard at the footy, its not about bigger bodies its about how much you want that football. Collingwood have got a handful of really good player but geelong have got a star studded line up on every line. Watched the game again last night and geelong dictated everything in the 3rd and last quarter because they were first to the football have cleaner skills, and are generally a much better football side than collingwood. It was a 56 point turn around. i think that says it all!

Nice summary of a result. We're actually discussing the reasons as to why the game turned out the way it did.

Saying Geelong are much more skilful and have cleaner skills is a simple statement that actually has no basis. Just putting it out there for you to consider - maybe Geelong's more mature and bigger bodies is why they appeared harder at the footy, and were able to win the ball easier as the game went on, and then find space as the game opened up. To be honest my own skills look pretty good when I'm 20 metres in the clear..

So Joel selwood, Allen christensen, Mathew stokes, travis varcoe those "big bodied" players won us the game. Its about who wants the ball more and what they are willing to do to get it. Contested possesion is the game winner. Geelong had a lot more heart and showed it in that last quarter have a good look at the varcoe goal in the last quarter when he ran the whole lengh of the field and tell me where his opponent was at the time he kicked it. Some players want it more than others.....and some players find it all to hard and just give up!!!

Joel Selwood is not a big bodied player? What?

Look, enjoy your grand final win, by all means.

But, if you're going to try and argue something, at least try and use some logic. You've already contradicted yourself about 10 times.

Re: Pendles article on bigger bodies

Geelong's size advantage around the stoppages was so evident. They really bullied us at times and had a better ability to push the ball forward and gain metres.

Over the last 2 years, this has actually been one of our strengths. But no doubt guys like Beams, Thomas, Sidebottom, Wood, Maxwell and Wellingham could all afford to put on some kilos. Another big bodied midfielder could be an option through trade/draft week as well.

An advantage in wet and greasy conditions becomes a liability on a 28 degree fast track.

I think yes our players will put on some more muscle, but that's a natural working out of where you need to be for some of them, being so young.

Personally I'd like to see us concentrate on winning that first ball then spreading quickly, and playing direct and attractive football. We have a very talented side (something we didn't have in 2002-03), let's use it.

I'm not so sure we need to recruit someone specifically for that bash and crash role. I will leave it up to Hine to decide, he has a better track record than me!

Re: Pendles article on bigger bodies

I still put a lot of it down to players being out of form and lacking match fitness. A ruckman in form can make the world of difference too.

The one thing players need to be careful is if they put on too much mass over the break they can cause soft tissue injuries. Kind of like when the Hawks won in 2008 guys like Hodge and Franklin bulked up and had horror years in 2009 because of it. Then they slimmed down again the following preseason to get their bodies fresh and remain injury free.

Nero, I didnt think pendle was over-reacting. I thought the collingwood fans are reading too much into what he said. He probably thought the younger blokes need to bulk up a little. I dont think we are going to try to turn the team into a pack of Josh Hunts... is it josh?...that short wide guy. Anyway, strength does become more important in finals and Geelong gets away with a severe lack of pace because they have strong mid-fielders who are willing to use it...

But we still won a premiership a year ago and I dont think we're a pack of weaklings..

Re: Pendles article on bigger bodies

Our tackles have been getting broken wayy too much this year it cost us many many goals we needa put on some muscle to fix that up.. Sidebottom is never gonna be fast so the extra bulk could really help him aroudn the stoppages and stuff. Imagine how bad a skinny ling would be? Beams too... if there not fast they should bulk up
