NAB Rising Star nominee Adam Treloar has revealed the secret weapon in GWS Giants' development arsenal: Magpie Scott Pendlebury.

The 19-year-old Giants midfielder went head-to-head with the Collingwood star at Skoda Stadium in round 18, amassing 37 disposals to be a shining light in the home side's 20-goal loss.

Treloar said it was a dream come true to play on "the best midfielder in the game", who also appears to have a future in coaching.

"He was giving me a few tips, telling me where to run," Treloar said of Pendlebury.

"I ran there and got the footy, so it was pretty lucky."

The free masterclass was news to his Magpies' football and coaching strategist Rodney Eade.

"I haven't heard that from the weekend," Eade said during his weekly appearance on FOX FOOTY's AFL Insider.

"I imagine it was probably the last 10 minutes of the game - hopefully it was the last 10 minutes of the game.

"Pendles is that sort of guy as well. The fact that we were 15 or 18 goals up, he was able to help the young lad.

"You wouldn't like that normally, I wouldn't have thought."

Treloar on Tuesday became the Giants' sixth NAB Rising Star nominee for the season, so it's fair to assume the Pies won't be offering the talented expansion side a leg-up for much longer.

Good sportsmanship. Eade should stfu its not like it made a difference to the game.

Pendles has class. We were so far ahead of them he took on a mentor role and why not? I love the sportsmanship. Life doesn't have to be so cut-throat...

You can be guaranteed that Pendles will be asked by Collingwood / AFL if this report is true, and if his answer is anything short of a flat out denial then he will be told ...

"Well what you did is admirable and you're a fantastic ambassador for Collingwood and the game and for good sportsmanship. But please do not do that ever again."

That kind of behavior, whilst it may seem admirable, can create all kinds of problems.

Firstly there is the risk of upsetting the betting agencies. Eventhough the result might be a foregone conclusion, there is still winning margin money on the line. Shaw's silly $10 bet and his resultant punishment just shows how seriously the AFL take the integrity of AFL gambling.

Secondly, it's not as though Collingwood can't do with all the percentage they can get. We have missed out on an end of season ladder position by a fraction of a percent before.

And there is a risk that that behavior could be seen as leaking Collingwood IP (Rightly or wrongly - doesn't matter, even the perception is bad).

thanks caro

sorry 76, but its a footnote only.
???

I love Pendles as much as anyone. And as a supporter it's kind of sweet what he did (if it's true). And I'm not suggesting that he would or should get sanctioned for it. But I'm pretty sure that the AFL and / or Collingwood will tell him not to do it again for good reason.

BTW, Trelor will be told by GWS that he shouldn't be accepting coaching tips by the opposition.

Can't think of one good reason why the AFL or the betting agencies would even give it a thought and the only way the Collingwood coaching department would even mention if it was if there was some tangible risk to our season. In the end, such discussion is a massive overreaction.

It looked like Maxy was giving advice to one of their young players after the game as well. Don't really have a problem with that. During the game is a bit strange though.

I saw one nice piece by Pendles in the third quarter. He was taking a free kick on the boundary about 60m out. He gestured to Elliott to run inboard into space - but what he was actually doing was getting Elliott to lead his man away to create space for Swanny to lead into.

Very clever.

The options for the club are ...

(1) pat him on the back for his sportsmanship
(2) ignore it
(3) ask him politely not to do it again.
(4) sanction him.

I simply think they'll go for option 3. I just can't imagine them ignoring it.
You're entitled to your opinion but personally I reckon they'd take the view that Pendles is a professional in every sense. there's no way on earth I could see the club doing anything more than asking him what it was all about if that. If Pendles is considered a leader then that's because the club knows that he has what it takes to know where and when to draw the line. To suggest he shouldn't do what he's doing would, no matter how delicately put, be a bit of a slap IMO.

If we had been a few points in front then you'd be filthy. But against GWS when we're clearly going to win, I can't see the harm in it.

Also, Maxwell did this to some young Bulldog (I think) last year or the year before? Maybe Dahlhaus or someone? I just remember that.

I don't see any outrage expressed here?

The only risk of outrage would be from any punters who had money on Collingwood winning by more than 20 goals.
If the club were to ask Pendlebury, hey stop giving this 18 year old a couple of tips on the footy field, then yes I would classify that as outrage.

Come on now, Pendles is so good that by giving one short instruction to Treloar he's turned him into a superstar and had some effect on the final scoreline. Surely you can see how outrageous that is. :thumbsu:
