Penrith have an identity crisis - they don't know who they are and their failed attempts at marketing and creating a brand for themselves reflect that. They've gone from wearing brown and white to wearing black, green, red, yellow, and white, to wearing black and teal. They've gone from a full panther logo to just using a head in the logo (that was coloured purple) back to using a full panther once more - but forgetting to add "Penrith" to it.

So, in this thread, we discuss and post ideas on what is wrong with Penrith's marketing (PenrithWelsh can help us out here) and we can also post our designs.

Okay, so here's what I think Penrith should wear. It's a fauxback - a mix between old and new. Traditional values with modern touches.

Firstly, the logo. The logo uses the Panther from the new logo they just released but is placed on a circle backdrop in a similar style to their old logo.

The colour brown was worn by Penrith from 1967-1990. It's a unique colour in the NRL and works well because its a reminder of their roots.

The hoops come from their design worn from 1991-1996, which is a reportedly popular design amongst Penrith fans.

I also added a gradient because gradients are cool.

You forgot the black, rust, teal, and white era.

Also the dropping of Penrith is to try and make the team appeal to a wider area of supporters (the whole of western Sydney).

We all know that both Canterbury and North Melbourne tried this, and the Balmain Tigers changed to the Sydney Tigers for a short period but all have gone back to their full or original names (of course currently Balmain do not have a team playing but up until last year were playing under their old name).

Who ever decided that this should know that this will fail both with the fans not wanting the club to lose their identity, but also that the league boundaries are very solid, there are supporters of clubs who do not live in their clubs area but no club is able to completely move into another's territory to gain many more fans.

I see this not lasting very long and the Penrith name will return to the logo within a couple of years.

The liquorice allsorts design is probably the most popular design the panthers have had, both in the eyes of their fans, and league fans in general.

Black seems the most logical base and brown is unique and a throwback. Unfortunately, they just look really shit together.

I'd love to see your take on a South Sydney design, mainly because if Souths released a guernsey like this in green/red or whote/green/red I would almost certainly buy it. Looks awesome.

Here's another Panthers concept I found (from here: http://gazf.info/penrith-panthers-2013-14/):

The logo is great, and I like the idea of the Pink Panthers alternate kit. The striped sleeves are unique and a nice reference to the liquorice all-sorts, but I'm not too sure how practical it'd be with sleeve sponsors. The "electric blue" and "dark chocolate brown" (which just looks like black or charcoal to me) remind me too much of Cronulla. I think Penrith should claim pink as a unique colour in the Australian sporting landscape (with the exception of the Sydney Sixers and anyone supporting breast cancer), and use black and/or brown, pink, and white as their colours.

Well that is a fantasy that will never happen. The current hoops (or hoops with side panels) are here to stay. Any change and Souths fans will riot.

I can hold out hope for a promotional one-off jumper. :(

I do love our hoops though.

I put this together as a cross over, but it'll work as an NRL jersey. Black, teal and charcoal is the go I think, with chocolate as a heritage kit

The aim of Penrith is to create a logo and jersey that the club will be recognised by. Look at the Essendon jumper, not much change since the club was formed except the size of the sash. Carlton's jumper has been the navy blue and white logo for the most of the existence. If you put Collingwood in anything other than black and white stripes or put another club in them, then Eddie will want to see you.

The jersey that many fans favour is the jersey worn in their first premiership, so this should be the starting block. Discovering why they changed their jersey should be investigated. Was it a money making idea, introduce a new jumper and they will buy. Also the wide variety of colours should be investigated. Not keeping to a few standard colours confuses fans. What colours do I wear to the game, if I get a jacket to wear at the game what colour should I get.

Can anyone remember the website that try to do what Mero did for the AFL clubs? Does any know the reasons why the changes were made? To know what people have argued against the jersey will allow us to create one that doesn't fall for the same traps again.

Any new logo and jersey should be kept by the club for at least 10 years before it can be changed. Then fans will know what their club is wearing. Also away and clash strips shouldn't be in colours other than the clubs colours. The Pink jersey, I know it is probably for the McGrath Foundation, but being mostly pink, a non club colour, leaves people thinking that they not be watching Penrith. It would have been better to go with a black jersey with pink replacing another colour.

Any logo used by the club should be used by the leagues club as well. Panthers is a famous venue, even outside NSW. Using the club to push the logo further can only help the club.

Here's a pink and dark brown option. The colours tie in well with the Oak sponsorship: chocolate and strawberry milk! The panther logo is from the Panthers group of clubs; the clubs and the team are affiliated, and I'm not sure how the clubs manage to have a significantly better logo. The side stripes are a reference to the liquorice all-sorts; with all the sponsors, it's difficult to have a lot of design elements without looking cluttered so lots of plain colour seems the best option for NRL jumpers.

Here's another option with less garish colours: black, brown, teal and white. (Given the choice, I'd probably vote for this option.)

Or a retro liquorice all-sorts option, with red, yellow and green:

The main thing Penrith needs to do is decide on some colours and stick to them. There's rumours that they'll be introducing gold soon and look something like either New Orleans or Jacksonville in the NFL.

You don't change the club's uniform for sponsors. They want to be associated with club. A strong club has a strong image which is easily recognisable, not an image that can be changed to suit each sponsor.

The licorice allsorts was dropped when the Panthers switched to Super League and were basically required to wear the standard Super League jersey design (as I believe their former designs were licensed by the NSWRL). The colours then changed during and after this period, I am not exactly sure why, but I think it was to make them look more aggressive.

The clubs last logo has lasted for a while (came in around 2000), and this one probably will last a while as well, with the only change I can see is the addition of Penrith to it at some point. I cannot think of an NRL team that has not kept their logo for less than that period (if one has it was close to 10 years). The majority of changes lately have been clubs reverting back to a more historic design (Parramatta, Bulldogs, and to some extent now Penrith).

As for the colours, Penrith have used their club colours as alternates (either white or teal) for the majority of the time that they have had those colours, however after the popularity of the "Pink Panthers" Women in League designs as well as the team having success while wearing them (won more games in pink than in any other alternate), they have become the primary alternate. It may not be in club colours, but it serves the purpose of an alternate in removing any clash. And the fans (both Penrith and other league fans) now know that they are watching the Panthers as they have made that colour their own (apart from the other teams one offs for WiL round).

Well the logo is now the same, so unfortunately the better logo for the Leagues clubs is no more.

One reason I would like to know is the reason for the change from Brown and White. When and why were the original colours of the Panthers changed?
The new leaping Panther logo is simply a modern version of the old leaping Panther logo. It should be leaping from a circle like the old logo.

Looking at what has been said the best move would be a move back to something like the old 1991 jersey and logo. This image of the club is the one the most Penrith fans seem to want and it marks a great time in their history. If it wasn't for the Super League then the old design may have been retained.
zu311h.png

The jerseys above by Essee Cross would be similar to what should be worn. With the elimination of the gradient effect and the introduction of white lines around the colours on the black home jersey. The third alternate strip, the pink strip should be done the same way as the other jerseys, except for pink replacing the black or white.

I believe the colours were changed from brown and white because Penrith was the least commercially appealing club in the NSWRL(which they still are in the NRL) so a change was needed. In 1990 our jersey had the lowest sales numbers in the league despite making our first Grand Final appearance, in 1991 when we changed identity and won the Premiership our sales numbers skyrocketed to highest in the league.

I personally love the brown and white, when we wore our heritage uniform vs Melbourne this year it was the first time in years I've seen an NRL jersey that actually looked like a rugby league jersey instead of a poorly designed walking billboard. On the other hand whenever we run out in our black colours I along with all other Penrith fans feel a special chill that we are the 'men in black' but we are all sick of change so I'd like to see a black version of our current away jersey as our home and a pink version for the away as we wear it so much anyway that it may as well be our full-time away strip.
