Interesting to see how many people dont rate our draft. Inthe papers and on here really didnt give us many complements. Find this fairly interesting. Varcoe will be a top player, and would have been top 5 without the injury. The club would have checked him out before drafting him, so we have no doubt a quality player there.

We Bolsterd our ruck stocks with west. The second best ruck in teh draft. Grabbed a few players, who i admit i havnt heard much of. Although Gameble sounds the goods. And stokes from what ive heard can play both ends.

Overall i think it was a greatly underrated draft from geelongs staff, who have a knack of getting good players later in the draft. :thumbsu: Well done Wells and Co

people don't rate our draft because we didn't have any really plum selection options - the media are really only interested in top 10 picks, or projected top 10 picks who were overlooked until 2nd round.

What a joke, rating a clubs drafting peformance post draft pre playing. The people that rate us down are the ones who think we should have picked the players they rated at our picks.Did they rate our 99 draft or our 01. When we look back in say 2 years if we have 2 senior players we will have done well, if we have more than that we will done exceedingly well. Some pick names , we make the names.Welles is probably the best at picking deep in the biz and I back 100% before any Richard Heads in the press

out of curiousity who has been criticising geelong's draft? all i've read is that the club has taken a punt on Varcoe who is super talented but under an injury cloud.. i'd hardly call that criticism as its simply the facts... either way its futile to rate how the club drafted at this point in time as no player has had a taste of AFL footy yet

Such ratings are simply based on prior reputation of the players, and how 'big' a name they are.

Nothing to read into.

Draft pics are examined way too much. FFS who knows what will become of pick 1 or pick 47. THe media and many idiots here go overboard on what if's and possibilities. Let the kids play first then scrutinise them.

In the Sunday Hun it rated Geelongs draft at 6.5 out of 10 (lowest clubs got 6 from memory). Considering Varcoe could have quite easily been picked up in the top 10 (Essendon or Richmond especially) and West was rated as the best big man in the state, I find it a bit hard to see what we had done wrong.

Mind you, I think we rated a 6 last year with our 3 picks and managed to get a key defender that played a dozen or so games and a key forward who averaged 2 goals per game in his 4 matches.

Time will tell but I'm pretty darn happy with Wellsy and the boyz.:D

good points, there would be several clubs who would be a little red faced about missing Egan

Varcoe was a steal up front, with the middle picks Wells has gone for similar types again. Stokes could be a bargain at the end.

The media dont rate most things we do.... actually everything.

People don't rate your draft because you picked a bunch of South Australians, and they don't know them.

Maybe.

I have full confidence in our recruiting staff to do the job draft after draft. Their record is impeccable.*

*if you don't count Cameron Thurley.

Clarke, Spriggs are a few others:thumbsd:

But those picks weren't stinkers at the time. Clarke was father son and Spriggs was very highly rated. Thurley on the other hand, was a really strange pick.

My point is though our recruiting teams strike rate is superb, even if a few turned out to be duds eventually.

I think we must be realistic about a assessing the success of draft picks. Recently I saw that only 5-6% of players drafted get to 100 games( the F/S mark) , so surely this is way too higher standard to set a pass. Maybe 50 games might even be doubtfull as a reasonable mark but Id say any player that once drafted and plays less than this would have to have been a finacial loss. He may still be considered a win if drafted for a purpose and achieves that, eg Montgomery may give the Dogs 25+ games but he should step in and produce imediately for the club.
So, basically , Im happy enough with the 25 pass mark and with this mark we have had very few failures since 99.

99,Bray and Foster
2000, redrafted Lowther and Simpson, traded for Mitchel White(P27,45,57)
(this could of given us Ted Richards,Jordon Bannister and Graham Johncock) and Justin Murphy ( Some might think Murphy was reasonable in that year but not me)
2001, an amazing draft, from 8 picks not one failure in my eyes, maybe one could name Matt.McCarthy at 69 but really thats picky
2002, 3 picks jury is out but it looks good.
2003, 3 picks jury out and Thurley gone and Spencer yet to play
2004, 3 picks jury but looking good, our first pick is the only one not yet to play.

The worst failure revolve around the experienced guys that didnt work in 2000.I dont think, Spriggs and Clarke were not failures. Spriggs played a solid two years of footy before doing his knee, then when he came back he found that footy had changed and dispossal had become far more important. Clarke's failure was not in his recruiting but in the prep of him. The Cats knew for year that they had him F/S yet he came into our club with appauling skills, his 85 odd games were frustraiting yet he played them so he gave a degree of value.
I only hope that the great list of future "names" that the Cats will be able to call on are schooled and trained to ensure minimal wasteage of the F/S advantage.

You can't rate draft until 2-3 after the fact. Anyone who tries to is kidding themselves. It's like predicting Melbourne Cup winners when a foal is born.
